[Implication of the measurement of central corneal thickness in management of glaucoma patients].

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is a elementary data in diagnosis and therapy of glaucoma. Many studies have confirmed that most tonometry, including Goldmann applanation tonometry, are influenced by central corneal thickness (CCT) and CCT varies greatly among the general population. As a result, the measurement of CCT has a great implication in management of glaucoma. Further, CCT is confirmed a risk factor for progression from ocular hypertension to primary open angle glaucoma. The idea of that CCT may bear an inverse relation with the risk for developing glaucoma damage is in debating. Many spec

New perspectives on glaucoma screening.

Glaucoma is defined as elevated intraocular pressure resulting in visual field defects. Elevated intraocular pressure without visual field defects is referred to as ocular hypertension. The prevalence of open-angle glaucoma in the population above the age of 40 years is less than one percent. Approximately one out of ten people with elevated ocular pressure has glaucoma. The concept of variable sensitivity explains why high ocular pressures do not always result in glaucoma. Glaucoma screening by tonometry can be justified only if used in conjunction with visual field testing.

Comparing Different Self-Tonometry Devices against Goldmann Applanation Tonometry - Special Focus on Biomechanical Properties of the Cornea.

BACKGROUND: Interest in self-tonometry as an additional component to glaucoma monitoring has been increasing for several years. Two self-tonometry devices, Ocuton S and iCare HOME, have seen clinical use, but reports are lacking as to how individual biomechanical corneal properties might influence readings. We compared the two devices against Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) as a reference method. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured by GAT and the two self-tonometers, Ocuton S*TT-MV and iCare HOME, on 108 patients with glaucoma, suspected glaucoma, or ocular hype

[Self-medication with local anaesthetics by glaucoma patients using teletonometry].

BACKGROUND: Self-tonometry, a supplementary measurement of the intraocular pressure in ophthalmology by glaucoma patients using an automatic tonometer, will become more and more important in the future. As long as the self-tonometry has to work in the contact modus with the ocular surface, home application of a topical anaesthetic by the glaucoma patient will be a requirement for a successful measurement. So far no severe problems within this controlled self-medication have been seen. Nevertheless, public health authorities believe patient health is put at high risk by the application of local
