Rub-thin-fracture-extract: first records of hermit crab predation and non-tool shell processing by coastal long-tailed Macaques at Wat Takiap, Thailand.

Coastal populations of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) display remarkable behavioral flexibility in exploiting intertidal food resources. Tool-using groups in Thailand are known to crack marine shellfish with stones, yet the behavioral repertoire of non-tool-using populations remains poorly documented. Here, we present the first report of long-tailed macaques preying on aquatic hermit crabs without using tools, based on observations at Wat Takiap, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Thailand. During low tide, macaques were observed employing a sequence of substrate-assis

Preparation and use of varied natural tools for extractive foraging by bonobos (Pan Paniscus).

OBJECTIVES: The tool-assisted extractive foraging capabilities of captive (zoo) and semi-captive (sanctuary) bonobo (Pan paniscus) groups were compared to each other and to those known in wild chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) cultures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bonobos were provided with natural raw materials and challenged with tasks not previously encountered, in experimental settings simulating natural contexts where resources requiring special retrieval efforts were hidden. They were shown that food was buried underground or inserted into long bone cavities, and left to tackle the tasks with

Sticks and Stones: Hand Preference and Grip in Wild Chimpanzee Tool-Use.

OBJECTIVES: Humans exhibit a near-universal right-handed bias, linked to hemispheric brain lateralization, yet its evolutionary origins remain unclear. Wild chimpanzees, one of our closest living relatives, show diverse tool-use behaviors and substantial variability, providing an appropriate context to investigate the emergence and functional significance of handedness in ecologically relevant settings. This study aimed to assess chimpanzee handedness and grip at both the individual and behavioral levels to determine whether specific tool-use tasks elicit consistent preferences. METHODS: We i

Simple tuberculosis screening tool using signs, symptoms, and risk factors to reduce the missed opportunity in the older population.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing concern on how to increase tuberculosis (TB) case detection in resource-poor settings. The healthcare facilities routinely providing services to the elderly for chronic diseases often failed to detect TB cases, causing a missed opportunity. This study aimed to develop a simple and sensitive screening tool using signs, symptoms, and risk factors for TB case detection in the elderly. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted from August to December 2020. A random sample of 302 subjects was taken from the elderly aged ≥ 60 years attending the outpatient p

Valuing Behavioral By-Products: Evolutionary Significance of Neutrally Drifting and Exaptive Cultures in Primates.

After challenging the view that cultural processes mainly produce behavioral adaptations, we urge researchers to adopt a pluralistic view on Darwinian evolution by emphasizing the diversity and importance of evolutionary by-products and highlighting the heuristic merit of concepts such as behavioral spandrels and exaptations, particularly in the domain of cultural evolution in primates. We then use the concept of the "structure-function interface" and draw from our own research on macaques to provide two examples of possible behavioral adaptations and their corresponding by-products, both of w

Spontaneous use of tools as straws in great apes.

Great apes can use multiple tools to extract food embedded in substrates and can invent new ways to exploit those resources. We tested five bonobos, five chimpanzees, and six orangutans in a task in which they had to use (and modify) a tool as a straw to drink the juice located inside a container. Experiment 1 showed that four orangutans and one chimpanzee invented the use of a piece of electric cable to get the juice. Experiment 2 investigated whether subjects could transform a non-functional hose into a functional one by removing blockages that impeded the free flow of juice. Orangutans outp

Reappraising the palaeobiology of Australopithecus.

The naming of Australopithecus africanus in 1925, based on the Taung Child, heralded a new era in human evolutionary studies and turned the attention of the then Eurasian-centric palaeoanthropologists to Africa, albeit with reluctance. Almost one hundred years later, Africa is recognized as the cradle of humanity, where the entire evolutionary history of our lineage prior to two million years ago took place-after the Homo-Pan split. This Review examines data from diverse sources and offers a revised depiction of the genus and characterizes its role in human evolution. For a long time, our know

Patterns and correlates of consumer protection tool use by Australian online gambling customers.

OBJECTIVE: Consumer Protection Tools (CPTs; e.g., deposit limits, timeouts) are provided by gambling sites to assist customers to gamble without harms. We aimed to understand how CPTs are used, and by which customers, which is essential to determine their effectiveness. METHOD: We examined the account data of 39,853 customers (median age = 33 years; 84% male) across six Australian wagering sites over 1 year (2018/07/01-2019/06/30). RESULTS: Most (83%) customers did not use any CPTs, with low rates of use for deposit limits (15.8%), timeouts (0.55%-1.57%), and self-exclusion tools (0.16%-0.57

Neandertals on the beach: Use of marine resources at Grotta dei Moscerini (Latium, Italy).

Excavated in 1949, Grotta dei Moscerini, dated MIS 5 to early MIS 4, is one of two Italian Neandertal sites with a large assemblage of retouched shells (n = 171) from 21 layers. The other occurrence is from the broadly contemporaneous layer L of Grotta del Cavallo in southern Italy (n = 126). Eight other Mousterian sites in Italy and one in Greece also have shell tools but in a very small number. The shell tools are made on valves of the smooth clam Callista chione. The general idea that the valves of Callista chione were collected by Neandertals on the beach after the death of the mollusk is

Tool use by Amazonian capuchin monkeys during predation on caiman nests in a high-productivity forest.

Descriptions of new tool-use events are important for understanding how ecological context may drive the evolution of tool use among primate traditions. Here, we report a possible case of the first record of tool use by wild Amazonian capuchin monkeys (Sapajus macrocephalus). The record was made by a camera trap, while we were monitoring caiman nest predation at Mamirauá Reserve in Central Amazonia. An adult individual was registered in a bipedal posture, apparently using a branch as a shovel to dig eggs out of a nest. Caiman eggs are frequently depredated by opportunistic animals, such as the

Using a bad tool with good intention: young children's imitation of adults' questionable choices.

We present three studies exploring 2- to 4-year-olds' imitation on witnessing a model whose questionable tool use choices suggested her untrustworthiness. In Study 1, children observed the model accidentally select a physically optimal tool for a task and then intentionally reject it for one that was functionally nonaffordant. When asked to perform the task for her, children at all ages ignored the model's intentional cues and selected the optimal tool. Study 2 found that when the model's nonaffordant tool choice was emphasized by claims about its design, 3-year-olds increased imitation. They

Observational Learning and Generalization in Infant Grasps of Novel Tools.

Tool use is a critical skill acquired in infancy. Here, we tested whether infants could learn how to grasp a tool from observing an adult model and whether this learning generalized to a new task and to increasingly dissimilar tools. Infants between 13 and 19 months of age (N = 75; Mage = 16.31 months; SDage = 1.73 months; 36 girls) observed an adult grasp a spatula-shaped tool by the narrow end, wide end, or both ends in alternation to push pom-poms through a tube during a modeling phase. Infants in a control condition observed an adult pour pom-poms from one large container into another. Dur

Biorelevant simulation of GI variability and its impact on the release behavior of non-disintegrating formulations: A case study using DHSI-IV (NERDT) system as a novel in vitro tool.

Gastrointestinal (GI) physiological variability significantly influences dissolution and bioavailability of non-disintegrating solid drug systems. This study employed the dynamic human stomach-intestine (DHSI-IV, branded as NERDT) system to characterize how gastric emptying kinetics and intestinal environmental dynamics affect drug release, using extended-release metformin matrix tablets (Glucophage XR®) and metformin osmotic pump tablets (Nida®) as model formulations. The DHSI-IV (NERDT) system accurately simulated three fasting-state gastric emptying profiles (30-120 min complete emptying) w

Design and development of a sensorized hammerstone for accurate force measurement in stone knapping experiments.

The process of making stone tools, specifically knapping, is a hominin behaviour that typically involves using the upper limb to manipulate a stone hammer and apply concentrated percussive force to another stone, causing fracture and detachment of stone chips with sharp edges. To understand the emergence and subsequent evolution of tool-related behaviours in hominins, the connections between the mechanics of stone knapping, including the delivery of percussive forces, and biomechanics and hominin anatomy, especially in the upper limb, are required. However, there is an absence of direct experi

Left anterior supramarginal gyrus activity during tool use action observation after extensive tool use training.

The advanced use of complex tools is considered a primary characteristic of human evolution and technological advancement. However, questions remain regarding whether humans possess unique underlying brain networks that support advanced tool-using abilities. Specifically, previous studies have demonstrated the presence of a structurally and functionally unique region in the left anterior supramarginal gyrus (aSMG), that is consistently active during tool use action observation. This region has been proposed as a primary hub for integrating semantic and technical information to form action plan

Phenotypic and genetic associations between gray matter covariation and tool use skill in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes): Repeatability in two genetically isolated populations.

Humans and chimpanzees both exhibit a diverse set of tool use skills which suggests selection for tool manufacture and use occurred in the common ancestors of the two species. Our group has previously reported phenotypic and genetic associations between tool use skill and gray matter covariation, as quantified by source-based morphometry (SBM), in chimpanzees. As a follow up study, here we evaluated repeatability in heritability in SBM components and their phenotypic association with tool use skill in two genetically independent chimpanzee cohorts. Within the two independent cohorts of chimpan

Network analysis highlights socio-demographic patterns of stone tool-using primates.

While the nutritional benefits and social learning of tool use in primates have been widely studied, far less is known about how tool use is associated with social life. We investigated the social aspects of tool use in a hybrid population of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis aurea × M. f. fascicularis) on Koram Island, Thailand, comprising both stone tool users and non-users. To assess potential socio-demographic patterns, we examined whether tool use differed between sexes and whether it was related to variation in dominance rank. Using social network analyses, we assessed whether to
