The dynamics of supernumerary tooth development are differentially regulated by Sprouty genes.

In mice, a toothless diastema separates the single incisor from the three molars in each dental quadrant. In the prospective diastema of the embryo, small rudimentary buds are found that are presumed to be rudiments of suppressed teeth. A supernumerary tooth occurs in the diastema of adult mice carrying mutations in either Spry2 or Spry4. In the case of Spry2 mutants, the origin of the supernumerary tooth involves the revitalization of a rudimentary tooth bud (called R2), whereas its origin in the Spry4 mutants is not known. In addition to R2, another rudimentary primordium (called MS) arises

An unusual cause of epistaxis in a young patient: the supernumerary nasal tooth.

Eruption of supernumerary teeth into the nasal cavity is a rare pathological condition. Identification of such teeth is important as they can sometimes cause significant morbidity. This report describes a young female patient with a complaint of epistaxis from the right nasal cavity. The diagnosis of a supernumerary nasal tooth was confirmed by computed tomography and the tooth was removed endoscopically with minimal morbidity.

Improvement of Eruption Disturbance in Mandibular Canine Caused by a Supernumerary Tooth.

A supernumerary tooth is a dental abnormality, which, in some cases, causes disturbance in the eruption of permanent teeth. A seven-year-and-four-month-old female was diagnosed with eruption disturbance in mandibular canine eruption caused by a supernumerary tooth. At the age of eight years and six months, the supernumerary tooth was extracted and space maintenance by a lingual arch was started. Long-term follow-up and interproximal enamel reduction of the primary molar led to the mandibular canine eruption and prevented malalignment. This report highlights the importance of a comprehensive ap

Intranasal supernumerary tooth: two case reports and review of the literature.

The presence of supernumerary tooth (SNT) in the nasal cavity is a rare condition with limited literature data. We report two cases with a history of nasal obstruction and difficulty breathing. In both cases, clinical and radiological examination confirmed intranasal SNT. Extractions were executed in general anesthesia using Rochester-Pean instruments transnasally. In addition, a literature review of intranasal SNT was performed. The database search retrieved a total number of 50 cases in time period from 1970 to 2020. Mean age of patients was 22.5 years. Most common symptoms were unilateral o

A Third Supernumerary Tooth Occurring in the Same Region: A Case Report.

The presence of a supernumerary tooth is one of the most common dental anomalies, and surgical treatment is often required to address this anomaly. Moreover, it may lead to malocclusion, and long-term follow-up is important to monitor its status. A 4-year-and-11-month-old boy was referred to our hospital for dental caries treatment. At 5 years and 5 months of age, a radiographic examination showed a supernumerary tooth (first supernumerary tooth) near the permanent maxillary left central incisor, and it was extracted 6 months later. Eighteen months after the extraction of the first supernumera

Effect of maxillary anterior supernumerary tooth extraction on the underlying malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic discrepancies are a common finding in patients with supernumerary teeth (ST). The presence of a ST can cause a number of orthodontic discrepancies, including delayed eruption or retention of adjacent teeth, crowding, spacing, and abnormal root formation. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of extraction of an anterior supernumerary tooth on the underlying orthodontic discrepancies without additional treatment for a 6-month period. METHODS: This was a prospective, longitudinal, observational, study. It included 40 participants with orthodontic malocc

Supernumerary, ectopic tooth in the maxillary antrum presenting with recurrent haemoptysis.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic eruption of teeth in non-dental sites is a rare phenomenon and can present in a variety of ways such as chronic or recurrent sinusitis, sepsis, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, headaches, ostiomeatal complex disease and facial numbness. However, presentation of such patients with recurrent haemoptysis has not been described in the literature so far. We have described a case of an ectopic, supernumerary molar tooth in the maxillary antrum in a patient who initially presented with haemoptysis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old male presented with a 2-month history of episodic h

A supernumerary maxillary tooth: its topographical anatomy and its clinical implications.

A supernumerary tooth was detected in the left maxilla during an osteology teaching session with undergraduate medical students. Supernumerary teeth have previously been detected in individuals who have approached a dental surgeon with a complaint and who have then been diagnosed by X-ray. Asymptomatic cases are frequently not diagnosed in time and it is only the malalignment or delayed eruption of the tooth which raises the suspicion that this type of dental anomaly is present. The present paper highlights the anatomico-radiological study of a supernumerary maxillary tooth in a bone specimen

Implant Placement When an Impacted Tooth and Supernumerary Teeth Are Present in the Maxilla.

The presence of impacted and/or supernumerary teeth in the maxillary anterior region can cause complications when attempting to perform restorations with implants. Extracting these structures can lead to adverse issues related to the adjacent dentition and require osseous grafting to provide a base to house the planned implant, but such an approach increases treatment time and cost. In this case report, a patient presented with an impacted permanent canine oriented on the horizontal plane with several supernumerary teeth coronal to the impacted canine. CBCT analysis revealed a very thin buccal

Imaging characteristics of enamel pearls on CBCT and their co-relation with supernumerary tooth.

OBJECTIVES: Enamel pearl (EP) is an ectopic growth of enamel that is generally round and white and it firmly adheres to the external root surface of tooth. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and imaging features of enamel pearls (EPs) and to investigate the potential relationship between EP and supernumerary tooth. METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 1003 patients were evaluated for the presence of EP. Descriptive characteristics of gender and age of patients and imaging features of EPs and presence of supernumerary tooth were recorded. RESULTS: In this st

Supernumerary primary tooth with facial and palatal talon cusps: a case report.

Talon cusp is a tooth anomaly originating from the tooth's lingual surface in most cases. To date, very rare cases have been reported documenting talon cusps both on the facial and palatal surface of an affected tooth in the dental literature. The purpose of this case report was to describe the facial and palatal talon cusps on an ectopic supernumerary primary maxillary tooth. A micro-CT investigation indicated no pulpal extensions within facial and palatal talon cusps.

Isolation and characterization of dental pulp stem cells from a supernumerary tooth.

BACKGROUND: Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) were primarily derived from the pulp tissues of primary incisors and permanent third molar teeth, whereas no report to our knowledge has yet been documented on deriving DPSCs from the other tooth types. The aim of this study is to present a novel approach of harvesting stem cells from a supernumerary tooth (a mesiodens). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pulp tissues from a mesiodens of a 20-year-old healthy male patient and the left lower deciduous canine of a healthy 10-year-old boy (the positive control) were extracted and cultured for DPSCs, which were

Endoscopic removal of a molariform supernumerary intranasal tooth (heterotopic polyodontia) in a horse.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old Thoroughbred mare was evaluated because of abnormal upper respiratory tract sounds (that had become apparent during race training) of 3 to 4 months' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: On initial physical evaluation, there were no abnormal findings. During trotting, an abnormal upper airway expiratory sound was audible. Endoscopic examination revealed a small mass protruding into the right ventral nasal meatus. Radiographic images of the skull revealed no abnormal findings. Computed tomography of the head revealed an abnormal structure in the same location as the mass

Coexistent partial anodontia and supernumerary tooth in the mandibular arch: a rare case.

Coexistent partial anodontia and supernumerary tooth in the lower jaw is a very uncommon condition. Very few cases have been reported in the literature of this condition, etiology of which is still obscure. Presented here is a rare case of simultaneous presence of single supernumerary tooth together with missing permanent central incisor teeth in the lower jaw without any associated systemic condition or syndrome.

Inactivation of IL11 signaling causes craniosynostosis, delayed tooth eruption, and supernumerary teeth.

Craniosynostosis and supernumerary teeth most often occur as isolated developmental anomalies, but they are also separately manifested in several malformation syndromes. Here, we describe a human syndrome featuring craniosynostosis, maxillary hypoplasia, delayed tooth eruption, and supernumerary teeth. We performed homozygosity mapping in three unrelated consanguineous Pakistani families and localized the syndrome to a region in chromosome 9. Mutational analysis of candidate genes in the region revealed that all affected children harbored homozygous missense mutations (c.662C>G [p.Pro221Arg],
