Maxillary Cystic Ameloblastic Fibroma in a Dalmatian Mix.

A 6-month-old intact male Dalmatian mix puppy was presented for the evaluation of left maxillary swelling due to a suspected cyst and an unerupted left maxillary canine tooth. Removal of the unerupted left maxillary canine tooth (204) and enucleation of the cyst was performed, followed by histological analysis, which identified the maxillary swelling to be a cystic ameloblastic fibroma. Ameloblastic fibromas are rare in companion animals, and to the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first cystic variant reported in dogs. The clinical, radiographic, cone beam computed tomography, and

Tooth eruption results from bone remodelling driven by bite forces sensed by soft tissue dental follicles: a finite element analysis.

Intermittent tongue, lip and cheek forces influence precise tooth position, so we here examine the possibility that tissue remodelling driven by functional bite-force-induced jaw-strain accounts for tooth eruption. Notably, although a separate true 'eruptive force' is widely assumed, there is little direct evidence for such a force. We constructed a three dimensional finite element model from axial computerized tomography of an 8 year old child mandible containing 12 erupted and 8 unerupted teeth. Tissues modelled included: cortical bone, cancellous bone, soft tissue dental follicle, periodont

Failure after closed traction of an unerupted maxillary permanent canine: Diagnosis and treatment planning.

This report describes the treatment of a 13-year-old girl with unerupted maxillary permanent canines. It illustrates how recognizing an unexpected problem influenced the decision-making process. Despite 6 months of closed-eruption traction, the left canine had not erupted. However, the neighboring teeth were intruded, suggesting a diagnosis of canine ankylosis. When the site was surgically reopened, the wire chain used for the orthodontic traction appeared to be osseointegrated. It was renewed, and traction was applied for another 16 months, and the tooth was successfully brought into the arch

Maxillary dentigerous cyst and supernumerary tooth. Is it a frequent association?

UNLABELLED: Dentigerous cysts, also known as follicular cysts, are a relatively common pathology in our field. They are associated with unerupted or semi-erupted teeth and are usually not related to supernumerary teeth. OBJECTIVE: To describe a dentigerous cyst case associated to a supernumerary tooth. CASE-REPORT: A large-sized dentigerous cyst is described, associated with a supernumerary tooth, affecting the whole maxillary anterior area. Appropriate treatment consists of performing root canals and a Partsch II procedure with a cystectomy, extracting the unerupted teeth, carrying out an a

Age-Associated Radiological Characteristics of the Gubernaculum Tract in Unerupted Maxillary Canines: A Retrospective, Computed Tomography Study.

BACKGROUND: The gubernaculum tract (GT) is thought to play a key role in tooth eruption, but its age-associated radiological characteristics in unerupted permanent teeth remain unclear. AIM: To evaluate age-associated radiological characteristics of the GT on computed tomography (CT) in unerupted maxillary canines in patients aged ≥ 9 years. DESIGN: This retrospective study analyzed 314 unerupted maxillary canines from 219 patients. GT status was classified as present, remnant, or non-visualized. GT luminal diameters were measured in GT-present teeth. Associations with age, sex, and unerupte

Life threatening hemorrhage associated with a dentigerous cyst in a dog: Case report.

Dentigerous cysts are the most common type of odontogenic cysts and arise from an unerupted tooth. These cysts have stereotypical radiographic and clinical findings. They can be extremely invasive but rarely present as a life-threatening emergency. This case report describes the stabilization and treatment of a 6-year-old mixed breed dog with a dentigerous cyst with concurrent life-threatening hemorrhage. The dog presented with severe oral hemorrhage from the mandibular artery and required multiple blood transfusions. It was ultimately diagnosed with a dentigerous cyst. Complications from dent

Retrospective analysis of factors influencing the eruption of delayed permanent incisors after supernumerary tooth removal.

AIM: This was to assess the predictability of eruption of delayed permanent incisors after supernumerary removal and creation of adequate space, in relation to: root maturity, degree of vertical impaction, and degree of angulation of impaction. METHODS: The dental records of children with supernumerary teeth delaying the eruption of permanent incisors were analysed. The type of a supernumerary tooth, its location and position were recorded, along with the stage of root maturation, angulation and vertical distance of impaction of the permanent incisor. At the initial surgery, the unerupted sup

A case of an extensive dentigerous cyst in the maxillary sinus leading to epiphora and nasal obstruction.

BACKGROUND: The dentigerous cyst is defined as a cyst that originates by the separation of the follicle from around the crown of an unerupted tooth. The clinical examination reveals a missing tooth or teeth and possibly a hard swelling, sometimes resulting in facial asymmetry and possible pathologic fracture. A large maxillary cyst involves the whole sinus and can transmit pressure to the walls of the sinus and, consequently, cause ophthalmologic and nasal symptoms to develop. OBJECTIVES: To report the case of an extensive dentigerous cyst with swelling of the right cheek, accompanied by unil

Relationship between fractures of the mandibular angle and the presence and state of eruption of the lower third molar.

OBJECTIVES: This study attempted to relate the incidence of fractures at the mandibular angle with the presence and state of eruption of lower third molars. STUDY DESIGN: The records and radiographs of 200 patients with mandibular fractures were examined. The presence and degree of impaction of lower third molars were assessed for each patient and related to the occurrence of fractures of the mandibular angle. Data were analyzed by chi-square statistic and the Student's t test. RESULTS: The incidence of angle fractures was found to be significantly greater when unerupted lower third molars w

Multidisciplinary approach for treatment of a dentigerous cyst - marsupialization, orthodontic treatment, and implant placement: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are common odontogenic cysts associated with unerupted teeth. We describe a previously unreported case of a multidisciplinary approach using surgical, orthodontic, and implant treatment to establish the occlusion for a patient with a maxillary dentigerous cyst. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old Japanese woman visited our hospital with a chief complaint of gingival swelling in her anterior maxillary region, midline diastema, and tooth crowding. Her main symptom was this gingival swelling. A panoramic radiograph revealed a radiolucent area, 30 mm in diameter, round

Dentigerous cysts suspected the other odontogenic lesions on panoramic radiography and CT.

Dentigerous cysts are known as the second most common type of cyst in the jaws. The cyst is one of the lesions occurred frequently in the posterior body of the mandible and is often related to the unerupted third molar and forms around the crown of the unerupted tooth attaching at the cementoenamel junction. Such characteristic appearances are the diagnostic points differentiating from ameloblastoma or odontogenic keratocyst. However, it would be hard for us to diagnose it as a dentigerous cyst if the lesion does not show its typical appearance. We experienced two cases of dentigerous cysts wh

Age-specific angulation of unerupted human third molar teeth in a cross-sectional sample.

For males aged 18 to 21, the angulation of unerupted third molars was unrelated to age. A counterbalancing loss of data resulting from tooth eruption and extraction accounted for this null finding. The value of age-specific angulation in determining whether a tooth will eventually erupt may be limited.

Fibrin glue mixed with platelet-rich fibrin as a scaffold seeded with dental bud cells for tooth regeneration.

Odontogenesis is a complex process with a series of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and odontogenic molecular cascades. In tissue engineering of teeth from stem cells, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), which is rich in growth factors and cytokines, may improve regeneration. Accordingly, PRF was added into fibrin glue to enrich the microenvironment with growth factors. Unerupted second molar tooth buds were harvested from miniature swine and cultured in vitro for 3 weeks to obtain dental bud cells (DBCs). Whole blood was collected for the preparation of PRF and fibrin glue before surgery. DBCs we

Odontogenic adenomatoid tumors associated with orthodontic treatment.

Because of a predilection for occurrence in the anterior jaw in association with an unerupted tooth, the odontogenic adenomatoid tumor (OAT) will sometimes be discovered in the context of an orthodontic procedure to promote and guide eruption of the tooth. Two cases illustrate this situation. Some other lesions that might have a clinical presentation similar to the OAT are named.

Association between tooth impaction and odontogenic lesions: A matched case-control study.

Background: Impacted tooth is common in dental practice. Dentists usually remove them if they are associated with any pathologic sign or symptom. The challenge is whether to extract the asymptomatic tooth or not. This study was conducted to determine the association between developmental odontogenic cysts and tumors and impacted and unerupted teeth, if left untreated. Methods: In this matched case-control study, 262 participants were recruited in case and control groups to evaluate the association between the presence of odontogenic cyst and tumors and unerupted and impacted teeth in patient r

Appearance can be deceptive: Dentigerous cyst crossing the midline.

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which develops by accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. Dentigerous cysts are usually solitary, slow growing, asymptomatic lesions that are incidentally found during routine radiographs They most frequently involve the mandibular third molar followed in order of frequency by the maxillary canine, mandibular second pre-molar and maxillary third molar. Occasionally, these cysts become painful when infected causing swelling and erythema. The cyst is usually small, however, when large
