AIM: To present a case of skeletal mandibular protrusion with multiple impacted ankylosed teeth, which were treated with conventional orthognathic surgery and alveolar corticotomy, respectively.
BACKGROUND: Tooth ankylosis is characterized by the fusion of a root surface with the surrounding alveolar bone. Various treatment modalities for tooth ankylosis have been developed and are used commonly in the clinic. Corticotomy is defined as the application of intentional surgical injury to the cortical bone to mobilize a tooth with the adjacent bone and soft tissues. The corticotomy technique has

Recent studies have indicated ankylosis, loss of attachment, and external resorption occurring as sequelae of orthodontic movement of impacted teeth when these teeth are ligated around the cervix with wire. The purpose of this study was to record the effects of two commonly employed methods of attachment to impacted teeth--the wire ligation and the direct bond. Twenty subjects who had previously undergone full-banded orthodontic treatment involving a unilateral impacted maxillary canine were studied. The contralateral non-impacted maxillary canine served as a control. In eight of the subjects

OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the clinical outcome of tooth autotransplantation and related prognostic factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-two cases of transplanted teeth from March 2006 to December 2016 were retrospectively investigated by medical records and radiographs. The clinical outcomes of transplanted teeth, which included tooth survival, inflammatory root resorption (IRR), ankylosis, and marginal bone loss (MBL), and the related prognostic factors were assessed via survival analysis.
RESULTS: The cumulative survival rate of transplanted teeth was 74%

The aim of this case series was to describe the endodontic management of 3 immature permanent teeth that sustained traumatic injuries and subsequently presented with complete ingrowth of mineralized tissue into the canal space. Ingrowth of bone/mineralized tissue into the canal has been considered a poor long-term outcome with an inherent risk of ankylosis. In cases 1 and 2, no endodontic treatment was undertaken, except for emergency management requiring splinting. The cases were followed for 36 and 23 months, respectively. No ankylosis was evident over the review period, and normal teeth eru

Ankylosis, mechanical and primary failure of eruption of molar teeth are rare and often difficult to distinguish between. All may have significant repercussions on the occlusion and successful management may involve invasive procedures. We present a case where an initial presentation characteristic of mechanical failure of eruption (ankylosis) of a first permanent molar tooth was excluded following a period of monitoring. Subsequent relief of crowding using a removable and then sectional fixed orthodontic appliance allowed spontaneous eruption of the tooth obviating the need for surgical inter

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ankylosis and subsequent tooth loss is a serious complication following tooth avulsion and replantation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the risk of ankylosis of human teeth replanted after various periods of dry storage prior to replantation. The material originates from a previously reported clinical study of 400 replanted teeth.
METHODS: Initial treatment, clinical and radiological examination and follow-up were conducted according to a standardized protocol. PDL was not removed. Follow-up periods ranged from 0.2 to 20 years (mean 5.1 years). The risk of ankylosis was

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on periodontal healing of replanted root surfaces in dogs histologically and histomorphometrically.
METHODS: A total of 36 roots of mandibular incisors and premolars from 6 mongrel dogs were used. The roots were randomly divided into 3 groups: 1) a positive control group (n=12), in which the periodontal ligament (PDL) and cementum were retained and the roots were soaked in saline; 2) a negative control group (n=12), in which the PDL and cementum were removed and the roots were soaked in saline; and 3)

Severe dental traumatic injuries, such as the complete displacement of a tooth from its socket (Avulsion) or the displacement of a tooth within its socket (Intrusive Luxation), may result in extensive injury to the root surface. As a result, the root surface injury heals without cementum and there is fusion between the alveolar bone and the exposed dentin or anorganic exposed cementum, without any attachment apparatus between them. This phenomenon is known as "dento-alveolar ankylosis" and is accompanied by ankylotic resorption of the root. In a process that results subsequent to the ankylosis

Dentoalveolar ankylosis is a common complication after replantation of teeth with injured periodontal ligaments. This is a serious complication for the tooth since it leads to progressive root resorption. In young individuals it may also cause infra-occlusion and reduced development of the alveolar process. The purpose of this study was to develop a method applicable to rats in order to follow the effect of systemic and local factors on the development of ankylosis and their possible effect on the length of the functional period of the ankylosed tooth before exfoliation. The maxillary first mo

BACKGROUND/AIM: The survival of an avulsed tooth highly depends on the emergency management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of ankylosis for avulsed human teeth stored in saliva preceded by various dry storage conditions prior to replantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data include 74 patients (54 male and 20 female) with 89 avulsed and replanted teeth (16 immature teeth, 73 mature teeth). Patient ages ranged from 6 to 36 years (median: 13.0 years). All teeth were stored in saliva before replantation. Treatment and follow-up were performed according to a standardized procedure. Fo

Traumatic tooth avulsion can lead to ankylosis, which may interfere with growth of the alveolar bone in a growing patient. The resulting difference in alveolar bone height and position can lead to esthetic problems such as open bite. A growing 13-year-old female patient presented skeletal Class III malocclusion with bone ankylosis of a maxillary anterior tooth. Even after 2 years of orthopedic and orthodontic treatment, little improvement was achieved regarding the positions of the anterior maxillary teeth, or the vertical position of the maxillary right central incisor. Therefore, surgical tr

This case report describes a successful orthodontic therapy of an adult female treated by mandibular central incisor extraction and vestibular fixed appliances. The patient presented a skeletal Class I with normodivergent facial pattern, Class II subdivision dental relationship, extremely deep Curve of Spee and severe overbite. Moreover, during the treatment, the upper left first molar does not respond to orthodontic forces due to tooth ankylosis, augmenting the difficulty of this case. Despite this, a good occlusal relationship on both sites and an optimal extraoral outcome have been achieved

Tooth ankylosis may occur at any time during eruption and may show varying degrees of infraclusion. Cases of fully erupted teeth subsequently becoming totally embedded in bone are rare. The three reports described here show cases of severe infraclusion ankylosis; the etiology and related problems are discussed. Associated periodontal, prosthetic and orthodontic problems can be avoided with early diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Avulsion is one of the most serious injuries of the tooth which is most commonly seen in young children and occurs in the upper front teeth. Immediate transplantation of the avulsed tooth is recommended treatment and results in good prognosis although this may not be always possible.
CASE REPORT: The present case highlights the 3-year follow-up of delayed replantation (after 15h) of maxillary central incisor which was avulsed due to trauma. The complications seen in the present case were ankylosis and inflammatory resorption, but clinically the tooth was asymptomatic and maintains

BACKGROUND: Identification of tooth ankylosis before comprehensive orthodontic treatment can be challenging. This case series illustrates different presentations of tooth ankylosis, the importance of early diagnosis, the use of surgical luxation to aid orthodontic alignment of ankylosed teeth and its sequelae.
CASE PRESENTATION: All three cases were adolescents: a 14-year-old girl with a highly placed upper left lateral incisor and history of general anaesthesia; a 14-year-old boy with an impacted upper right first premolar and history of dental trauma; and a 13-year-old girl with an infraocc

BACKGROUND: Avulsion of the permanent teeth is one of the most serious oral health problems among active children and adolescents. Traumatized patients require immediate and correct treatment in order to restore damaged structures and function that have major impact on daily patient's life. As a result, proper guidelines and fast treatment methods are necessary. This case report discusses treatment of maxillary right central incisor with an open apex that had been avulsed and replanted. We review applied treatment procedures to manage dental avulsion and restore function and aesthetics.

INTRODUCTION: Despite researchers' recent interest in identifying links between some dental and craniovertebral abnormalities, there are many important, unassessed gaps in our knowledge of this matter. In addition, previous samples were small. This large study aimed to examine, for the first time, the occurrence/severity of numerous dental and skeletal anomalies or variations and their correlations with each other and with growth patterns.
METHODS: This epidemiological study was conducted on pretreatment radiographs of 1194 patients from 3 cities (815 females). Skeletal sagittal skeletal rela

Dinosaurs possess a form of tooth attachment wherein an unmineralized periodontal ligament suspends each tooth within a socket, similar to the condition in mammals and crocodylians. However, little information is known about tooth attachment and implantation in their close relatives, the silesaurids. We conducted a histological survey of several silesaurid taxa to determine the nature of tooth attachment in this phylogenetically and paleoecologically important group of archosaurs. Our histological data demonstrate that these early dinosauriforms do not exhibit the crocodilian/dinosaur conditio
