Nonocclusal dental microwear analysis of 300,000-year-old Homo heilderbergensis teeth from Sima de los Huesos (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain).

Casts of nonocclusal enamel surfaces of 190 teeth from the Middle Pleistocene site of Sima de los Huesos have been micrographed by scanning electron microscopy. Microscopic analyses of striation density and length by orientation show distinct patterns of intrapopulation variability. Significant differences in the number and length of the striations by orientation are found between maxillary and mandibular teeth. This probably reflects differences in the mechanical forces involved in the process of chewing food. Significant differences are present between isolated and in situ teeth that could b

Erosion in children: an increasing clinical problem?

Tooth wear is becoming more common in both adults and children. The triad of attrition, abrasion and erosion has been known for many years, but the contribution of erosion (irreversible loss of dental hard tissue due to a chemical process not involving bacteria, or the loss of tooth surface not directly associated with mechanical or traumatic factors or caries) to excessive loss of tooth tissue is now being emphasized. The authors of this paper examine the problem and suggest ways of overcoming it.

PICA.

"PICA" means perverted appetite for substances not fit as food or of no nutritional value such as, bricks, clay, soil, ice, laundry starch, etc. The word ''PICA'' is derived from Latin word for Magpie, a species of bird that feeds on whatever it encounters. ''PICA'' has been observed in ethnic groups worldwide in primitive and modern cultures, in both sexes and in all age groups. The case presented here reports a 30 year old female patient who had craving for ingestion of gravel and brick fragments since the age of 13 years. Iron deficiency anemia was found after complete blood count and iron

Tooth wear in the mixed dentition: a comparative study between children born in the 1950s and the 1990s.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of tooth wear in posterior deciduous teeth of 100 subjects in the second phase of mixed dentition who were born in the 1950s (50sG) and 100 subjects born in the 1990s (90sG). The degree of abrasion for each posterior deciduous tooth was scored ranging from 0 to 3. The comparison of the degree of abrasion showed significant differences between the two groups for all examined teeth (upper and lower deciduous canines and first and second primary molars) all of which appeared to be more abraded in the 50sG. The findings of the present study indicate

Abattoir survey of dental defects in cull cows.

The teeth in the severed heads of 501 cull cows, all over 30 months of age, were examined at an abattoir in the north of England in 1997/98; 80 per cent of them were Friesians or Holsteins. Seventy-three animals (14.6 per cent) had one or more missing incisors, most of which were acquired losses. Rotation and overlapping of rostral teeth were also common, as was attrition. Congenitally absent first lower premolars, other missing teeth, large and often multiple interdental spaces, and a few cases of macrodontia, cavitation, multiple defects and fractures were observed in the cheek tooth arcades

Dental pathologies in ten free-ranging chimpanzees from Gombe National Park, Tanzania.

The dental remains of ten adult chimpanzees from Gombe National Park, Tanzania, were examined for enamel attrition, caries, abscesses, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Age was the underlying factor in the development of dental pathology, in that enamel wear was present to some extent in all ten but was uniformly severe only in the three for whom estimated age at death was 39-43 years. In turn, enamel wear appears to have been the direct cause of abscess development, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Periodontal disease was commonly expressed as alveolar resorption, particularly around t

Investigation and treatment of patients with teeth affected by tooth substance loss: a review.

Tooth substance loss, an increasing problem, may result from erosion, abrasion and attrition, often with more than one of these acting together. Investigation requires a detailed history and examination. The aim of treatment may be prevention of further damage in less affected cases. The treatment of severe tooth substance loss may be complex, especially in view of the reduced amounts of tooth substance which may be available and the need to find space because of the compensatory over-eruption of worn teeth.

Dental disease in the Chinese Yin-Shang period with respect to relationships between citizens and slaves.

Seventy-one skulls from the Yin-Shang period tombs of Anyang, China, were examined for the incidence of observable dental diseases, including dental caries, alveolar bone resorption (an index of periodontal disease), ante-mortem tooth loss and tooth attrition. Because the remains were excavated from tombs with funerary items, the burials are believed to be of Anyang citizens. Our study indicates carious tooth frequency in the Yin-Shang period was rather low (2.9-4.0%). Periodontal disease frequency was 18.3-26.9%, and ante-mortem tooth loss frequency was 2.0-7.5%. To determine the relative pre

Oral rehabilitation of a child with primary failure of tooth eruption.

This article describes the prosthetic evaluation and treatment of a 10-year-old female patient with primary failure of tooth eruption. This case is unique in that the failure of eruption affected both the deciduous and permanent dentition in all quadrants, in the absence of any other systemic abnormalities. After diagnostic articulation and a thorough discussion of the treatment with the patient and her parents, complete maxillary and mandibular overdentures were fabricated. The process followed with this preadolescent patient to ensure maximum compliance, success, and encouragement toward a p

A description of a contemporary human skull material in respect of age, gender, temporomandibular joint changes, and some dental variables.

UNLABELLED: Controversy exists concerning the etiological factors behind degenerative changes in the temporomandibularjoints (TMJs). Occlusal factors, ageing, gender and genetics are some factors that have been discussed. The aim of the present study was to examine a contemporary human skull material in respect of gender, age, occlusal variables and form and surface changes in the temporomandibular joints. The material consisted of 259 human skulls, 170 males and 89 females, with an age range of 18-100 years. The over all dental status was poor, and 22% were edentulous. Both medio-lateral and

Speech changes in patients with a full rehabilitation for severe tooth wear, a first evaluation study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in speech characteristics and self-perceived quality of speech in tooth wear patients, after occlusal rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with tooth wear were included in this study after informed consent. The amount of tooth wear was scored with Tooth Wear Evaluation System (TWES). To assess the perspective of the patient, the Dutch Speech Handicap Index was used (SHI). Acoustic analysis was performed to evaluate changes with the use of voice recordings. These were made before treatment, T0; directly after treatment, T1; 1

Oral-health-related quality of life among undergraduate dental students with Tooth Wear.

BACKGROUND: Tooth Wear results from multiple mechanisms, including erosion (chemical loss), attrition (tooth-to-tooth contact), and abrasion (mechanical wear), represent an emerging concern among young individuals (Li MHM, Bernabé E. J Dent. 55:48-53, 2016). The severity of Tooth Wear can be measured using the Tooth Wear Index, which scores each tooth surface from 0 to 4. With time this mechanism can proceed to visible lesions on the tooth surface; these lesions may cause dysfunction, increase sensitivity, and disfigure facial appearance. Understanding the role of target population, behavioral

Erosive tooth wear and caries experience in children and adolescents with obesity.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A large consumption of fermentable carbohydrates, for instance the high intake of sweetened beverages, is an important risk factor for overweight and obesity. As lemonades and fruit juices present high sugar content and quite low pH-values, overweight and obese children might also have an increased risk for dental caries and erosive tooth wear. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to analyze the prevalence and severity of erosive tooth wear and caries experience in children and adolescents with overweight, obesity and extreme obesity compared to children with normal weight and to de

Factors affecting the lifespan of the human dentition in Britain prior to the seventeenth century.

OBJECTIVE: To confirm that compensatory eruption (supereruption) of teeth past a stable periodontium occurs in response to severe occlusal attrition. DESIGN: Regression analysis study from radiographs and direct measurements. SETTING: Archaeological material at the University of Aberdeen. SUBJECTS: 47 individuals > 21 years old and dating from Late Mediaeval times (1300-1600 AD). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Occlusal attrition was recorded on the first permanent mandibular molars. Measurements on radiographs of the teeth from the fixed point of the inferior dental canal were taken to the occlusa

Dental paleopathology in a Serbian Medieval population.

Analysis of the pattern of dental disease in two Late Medieval populations from cemeteries excavated at archaeological sites in western Serbia was based on the study of tooth wear, ante-mortem tooth loss, caries, dental enamel hypoplasia, alveolar resorption, abscesses and calculus. The findings reported here show a high prevalence of attrition, alveolar resorption and caries, which suggest an abrasive diet and poor oral hygiene.

Esthetic and functional rehabilitation of severe facial asymmetry and dental attrition in a patient with hemifacial microsomia: an interdisciplinary treatment outcome.

The treatment management of patients with hemifacial microsomia (HM) includes both surgical and nonsurgical approaches and depends primarily on the degree of deformity of the facial and skeletal structures. In this context, the combined efforts of the maxillofacial surgeon, the orthodontist, and the prosthodontist are essential for a satisfactory functional and esthetic outcome. Case presentation: A 31-year-old man presented with a chief complaint of facial asymmetry. The patient had been diagnosed with HM on the right side, with severe external ear deformity, and hypoplasia of the facial musc
