This case report describes the extraction of 3 mandibular posterior teeth (teeth #19, 20 and 21) with extensive invasive external cervical resorption (ECR) followed by guided double auto-transplantation of immature mandibular third molars (teeth #17 and 32). A 17-year-old male with a history of orthodontic treatment reported with intermittent pain in the mandibular left posterior region. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed extensive tooth tissue loss in teeth #19, 20 and 21 that was diagnosed as class 3 ECR (Patel 3Dp for teeth #20 and 21, 3Bp for tooth #19). Guided double auto-tran

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is a relatively uncommon form of external resorption, which may occur in any tooth in the permanent dentition. Characterized by its cervical location and invasive nature, this resorptive process leads to progressive and usually destructive loss of the tooth structure, the clinical features of which often resemble internal resorption ("pink tooth"). This article describes a case report of ICR and its management. The salient features were a large resorptive defect and localized fibrous in-growth located almost wholly on the cervicolabial aspect of the maxillary

INTRODUCTION: The alveolar bone is an essential consideration when planning treatment for patients with tooth agenesis. This study evaluated the changes in the alveolar bone and adjacent teeth in patients with a congenitally missing mandibular lateral incisor using cone-beam computed tomography.
METHODS: Twenty-three nonorthodontically treated adults with a unilateral congenitally missing mandibular lateral incisor were the missing group (M group). The control group (C group) consisted of 23 nonorthodontically treated adults with normal occlusion and no missing teeth. First, the difference in

The talon cusp, or dens evaginatus of anterior teeth, is a relatively rare dental developmental anomaly characterized by the presence of an accessory cusplike structure projecting from the cingulum area or cementoenamel junction. This occurs in either maxillary or mandibular anterior teeth in both the primary and permanent dentition. This article reports five cases of talon cusp, two of them bilateral, affecting permanent maxillary central and lateral incisors and canines that caused clinical problems related to caries or occlusal interferences.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the root canal morphology of bifurcated canals in mandibular premolars in a Thai sub-population using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).
METHODS: Eighty extracted mandibular premolars with bifurcated canals, comprising 64 mandibular first premolars and 16 mandibular second premolars, were scanned using micro-CT and analysed. Root canal morphology was evaluated in terms of the distance and level of canal separation from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ), direction of canal bifurcation and angles of canal separation and curvature.
RESULTS: The mean distance of canal

AIM: To propose a clinical approach strategy on the diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of external cervical tooth resorption (ECR) cases. To investigate and discuss the outcome of this approach.
METHODOLOGY: A clinical approach strategy on ECR was developed based on a retrospective observation study of 542 teeth. Forty-seven teeth were excluded due to lack of clinical/radiographical information, and 182 were immediately extracted. This approach had three steps: diagnosis, treatment planning and evaluation. During diagnosis, the medical, dental history and clinical/radiographical characterist

The cement - enamel junction (CEJ) gains a growing interest in clinical dentistry, due to an increasing number of idiopathic tooth resorption leading to the inevitable loss of permanent dentition. Therefore, in this research study, we investigated healthy and under resorption teeth to verify junctions' morphology in relation to the resorption process, its initiation, and propagation. Using light and scanning electron microscopy we examined the three types of CEJ: 1) coronal cementum, 2) abutment) and 3) the gap between cementum and enamel. With energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) we ana

Dens evaginatus (DE) and dens invaginatus (DI) are rare developmental anomalies of tooth formation. These variations in odontogenesis have been individually observed and reported in the literature. This report describes the radiographic appearance and management of a 16-year-old boy who came to the clinic with a rare occurrence of both DE and DI in the same tooth and examines the criteria used in identifying and classifying such anomalies. This report also discusses the importance of early identification and efficient management of dental anomalies, which can prevent irreversible pulpal pathol

Ankylosis is generally discovered following resistance to orthodontic displacement of an impacted canine. This retrospective study, drawing on direct perioperative observation of impacted teeth and of their sites, is intended, among other things, to analyze the causes of resistance to orthodontic movement and to report on the therapeutic interest of the surgical tooth displacement technique in this type of clinical situation. We demonstrate that primary coronal ankylosis can be detected by the orthodontic practitioner using radiographic records, that cervical ankylosis consequent to operative

This review investigated whether any therapeutic options influenced the outcome of treatment for teeth with external cervical resorption. Out of 870 articles identified by an electronic search, 60 clinical case reports and six case series were included. No randomised clinical trials were found. Risk of bias was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute's tools. External surgical intervention was the preferred method of accessing the lesions. Removal of resorptive tissue was most often achieved mechanically. Bioactive endodontic cements were the preferred materials for restoring teeth. The outcome

External cervical resorption (ECR) is the loss of dental hard tissue as a result of odontoclastic action; it usually begins on the cervical region of the root surface of the teeth. The etiology, predisposing factors, diagnosis, and management of ECR are reviewed. Effective management and appropriate treatment can only be carried out if the true nature and exact location of the ECR lesion are known. The role of cone beam computed tomography as a diagnostic adjunct for the management of ECR is also reviewed.

Several pathoses can be present concurrently in one tooth, and if that tooth has an unusual anatomical variation, the diagnosis and treatment can be further complicated. This case stresses the importance of accurate assessment and diagnosis prior to intervention and their role in identifying cases for referral to a specialist in today's increasingly litigious environment.

BACKGROUND: An apical shift in the position of the gingiva beyond the cemento-enamel junction leads to gingival recession. This study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility of digital measurements of gingival recession when compared to conventional measurements taken clinically using periodontal probes.
METHODS: Gingival recession was measured at 97 sites in the oral cavity by four examiners using the following methods: CP, direct measurement of gingival recession using William's periodontal probe intraorally; CC, measurements on cast models using a caliper; DP, digital measurement on virtual

In the study of orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption, many researchers use the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) as a bisecting reference point to measure the amount of root shortening. The accuracy of the identification of the CEJ point might affect the conclusions of those studies. This study aims to find the effects of angular changes between the tooth and the film on the validity and reproducibility of identifying three different CEJ points, ie, the most apical CEJ point between the crown and the root, the most mesial CEJ point, and the most distal CEJ point. An extracted maxill

AIMS: To determine if the cementum on the maxillary right and left first premolars has identical physical properties.
METHODS: Ten normal maxillary first premolar teeth, extracted from five orthodontic patients with a mean age of 14.0 years, were used. The teeth had not been subjected to an orthodontic force. The hardness and elastic modulus of the cementum were measured on the buccal and lingual surfaces of the roots at three locations: cervical third, middle third and apical third.
RESULTS: There were no significant side-to-side differences in cementum hardness (Mean side-to-side differenc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Domestic cats commonly suffer from external osteoclastic tooth resorption, a disease with many similarities to human multiple idiopathic root resorption. In both diseases, it is unclear whether anatomical features of the tooth surface are associated with a predisposition for resorptive lesions. The aim of the present study was to investigate the origin and progression of early feline osteoclastic resorptive lesions in teeth exhibiting no clinical signs of disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The entire surfaces of 138 teeth from 13 adult cats were analysed using back-scatt

Lead remains one of the most hazardous metals in our environment. The concentrations of lead in coronal dentine and enamel have previously been reported but limited information is available regarding lead levels in radicular dentine and cementum. This study reports the distribution of lead in 26 roots of 16 human maxillary primary teeth from seven individuals. In addition, calcium and phosphorous concentrations were also measured to detect any variations in the degree of mineralization in different regions of the roots. The mean lead concentration in these roots was 1.67 +/- 1.43 microg/g, whi
