Aspiration of two permanent teeth during maxillofacial injuries.

Aspiration of a tooth in maxillofacial injuries is a known complication necessitating prompt recognition and early treatment to minimize potentially serious and, sometimes, even fatal consequences. Here, we report a rare and unusual case in its presentation, the patient having aspirated 2 permanent teeth after maxillofacial, cervical vertebrae, and thoracic region crush injuries due to a motor vehicle accident. The diagnosis of teeth aspiration was delayed until 2 weeks after the event. An aspirated anterior tooth was expectorated by the patient himself, and the other aspirated anterior tooth

Clinical practice: dental trauma.

Approximately 50% of children under the age of 15 are victims of various kinds of injuries in the orofacial region. Post-traumatic complications may occur, including crown discolouration, cervical root fracture, ankylosis, root resorption and tooth loss. The most severe complication after dental injury in primary dentition can affect the developing permanent tooth germ, and various consequences may be seen several years later when the permanent tooth erupts. In the permanent dentition, the most severe dental injury affects the surrounding alveolar bone structure and will lead to loss of the to

Biogenic Tooth-Integrated Fixed Functional Space Maintainer for Pediatric Use: A Novel Approach.

Preschoolers frequently experience traumatic dental injuries, particularly during their two to four years of life. The majority of these injuries result in tooth avulsion because of the alveolar bone resiliency around the primary teeth. This study explains an instance of damage sustained during play that resulted in an early knockout of the primary incisor. Hence, a biogenic tooth-integrated space maintainer was created using the natural crown of the traumatized tooth, and the child was asked to come for a regular follow-up. This treatment may be viewed as a great alternative for natural aesth

Tooth Development Following Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis in Neonates With Pierre Robin Sequence.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular distraction osteogenesis is a widely utilized surgical procedure in the pediatric population for the treatment of mandibular retrognathia. Patients with congenital abnormalities may display severe mandibular hypoplasia and associated functional problems. Distraction osteogenesis is effective in alleviating airway obstruction for these patients and is performed early in life, often during the neonatal period and during infancy. However, problems in tooth development may arise as a surgical complication. EVIDENCE REVIEW: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and EMB

Traumatic injuries: an online study guide.

The Editorial Board of the Journal of Endodontics has developed a literature-based study guide of topical areas related to endodontics. This study guide is intended to give the reader a focused review of the essential endodontic literature and does not cite all possible articles related to each topic. Although citing all articles would be comprehensive, it would defeat the idea of a study guide. This section will present classification of traumatic injuries, crown/root and root fractures, canal obliteration secondary to traumatic injuries, root resorption secondary to traumatic injuries (inter

Intrusion injuries of primary incisors. Part III: Effects on the permanent successors.

Intrusion injuries of the primary dentition are highly associated with developmental disturbances of their successor teeth. The age of the child at the time of injury, the direction and severity of the intrusion, and the presence of alveolar bone fracture are important variables influencing the effect of primary tooth intrusion on the developing permanent germ. The developmental defects of the permanent successor tooth range from mild alteration in enamel mineralization to severe sequestration of the developing germ. This article will review the developmental anomalies of the permanent incisor

Influence of the tooth section technique in alveolar nerve damage after surgery of impacted lower third molars.

This study is a randomized control split-mouth non-blinded prospective trial, the aim of which was to evaluate clinically the frequency and type of injury to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) following mandibular third molar surgery using or not using the tooth section technique. The sample consisted of 50 lower third molars in 25 patients, in the control group the tooth section technique was not used, and it was used in the experimental group. The outcomes have shown a frequency of 8% of IAN injury for both groups (in both genders), and there were no statistically significant associations bet

The importance of soft tissue examination in traumatic dental injuries: a case report.

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) represent one of the main oral health problems in children, with variable prevalence rates. The issue of unmet treatment needs and inadequate emergency management of TDIs have surfaced up lately in dental literature, indicating that some TDIs present late for treatment, which may complicate management of these injuries. Soft tissue injuries usually accompany other dental injuries therefore thorough clinical and radiographic inspection of soft tissue wounds can not be over emphasized, even in late presentation cases. Tooth fragments may be embedded in soft tissu

[Dental injuries due to miniplate osteosynthesis. Classification, treatment management, complications, and prognosis].

BACKGROUND: In spite of a monocortical design, miniplate osteosynthesis can injure dental roots directly as well as damage dental substance indirectly by interrupting the apical blood stream. PURPOSE: The present retrospective study classifies different types of dental root trauma caused by monocortical screws, suggests therapeutic options based on diagnosis, and documents survival probability and prognosis after tooth trauma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: During a period of 11 years, 380 patients with permanent dentition underwent miniplate osteosynthesis for the treatment of mandibular fractures,

Unique fatality due to claw injuries in a tiger attack: a case report.

This paper describes a unique case of a fatal tiger attack in the wild. In the present case, a tiger fatally mauled a 34-year-old female with its claws, instead of the usual mechanism of killing by the bite injury to the neck. The autopsy revealed multiple fatal and non-fatal injuries caused by the tiger claws. The characteristic injuries due to the tooth impacts were absent as the teeth of the offending tiger were either fallen or non-functional. To the best of our knowledge, probably this rare case would be the first reported human fatality due to the tiger claw injuries in the world. The pu

Treating a Dentoalveolar Fracture in a Four-Year-Old Girl With a Functional Removable Partial Denture.

In children and young adults, traumatic dental injuries are common. Children's tooth loss is mostly caused by dentoalveolar trauma. Owing to anatomical variations and developmental phases, treating such injuries is difficult. Trauma to deciduous teeth might harm the permanent tooth beneath; however, trauma to permanent teeth can worsen their long-term outlook. An alveolar segment trauma may result in the irreversible loss of dental tissues, malalignment, and deformity. The periodontium and pulpal tissues suffer significant harm as a result of this. In the current case, there was a segmental co

Delayed partial pulpotomy in a midroot and complicated crown-root-fractured permanent incisor with hyperplastic pulpitis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of multiple injuries of the same tooth is extremely rare. This case report describes the treatment in a midroot and complicated crown-root-fractured permanent incisor that remained untreated for 4 years after the accident. METHODS: The tooth was treated by delayed partial pulpotomy using calcium hydroxide. RESULTS: At the 3-year follow-up after treatment, the tooth was still vital and functional without any clinical and radiographic signs and symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: A young permanent tooth with hyperplastic pulpitis caused by trauma has a great inherent defensive

Esophageal perforation by a tooth in child abuse.

A unique case of child abuse in a six-year-old Hispanic girl is reported. In this case, a tooth avulsed and swallowed during an episode of physical abuse and/or sexual abuse, caused an esophageal perforation resulting in a retropharyngeal abscess and mediastinal abscess containing the tooth. Although traumatic esophageal injuries in child abuse have occurred, the presence of a tooth within the mediastinal abscess is an unique manifestation of child abuse.

Dental injuries in paediatric mandibular fracture patients.

PURPOSE: Dental injuries (DIs) are associated with facial fractures, particularly mandibular fractures. As paediatric mandibular fractures have special features, we sought to clarify the occurrence and types of DIs among this patient group. We assessed how age, injury type, and fracture location affects the occurrence of DIs and thereby defined which patients are most susceptible. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients < 18 years with a recent mandibular fracture. Predictor variables were gender, age group, mechanism of injury, type of mandibular fracture, and other associated fa
