Mechanisms of Osteoclastogenesis in Orthodontic Tooth Movement and Orthodontically Induced Tooth Root Resorption.

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is achieved by the simultaneous activation of bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. When orthodontic forces are applied, osteoclast-mediated bone resorption occurs in the alveolar bone on the compression side, creating space for tooth movement. Therefore, controlling osteoclastogenesis is the fundamental tenet of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic forces are sensed by osteoblast lineage cells such as periodontal ligament (PDL) cells and osteocytes. Of several cytokines produced by these cells, the most important cytokine promoting os

[Experimental study of bone resorption after tooth extraction with implanted hydroxyapatite tooth root substitute].

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) tooth root substitute implantation have been applied to extraction sockets in many studies for purpose of preservating alveolar bone. Dimensional changes were measured with sectioned study cast of cephalometric X-ray photo. In this study, dimensional changes were determined by newly developed evaluation system which utilizing image analyzer (Immunomedica Co., Ltd.), in a view of conserving alveolar ridges beneath the denture base. Cone shaped HAP tooth roots (5 or 6 mm in length) were implanted to one subject and disk-like shaped HAP tooth roots (2 mm in length) were also

LncRNAs modulating tooth development and alveolar resorption: Systematic review.

Tooth development is an intricate process that encompasses cellular activities, molecular signaling pathways, and gene expression patterns. Disruptions in any of the processes can lead to structural anomalies, impairments in function, and increased vulnerability to oral disorders. Alveolar resorption, which refers to the pathological loss of alveolar bone around teeth, poses a substantial clinical problem in periodontal disorders such as periodontitis. Long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) have been implicated in the regulation of these physiological and pathological processes, and they exert their i

Radiological prevalence of equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis.

BACKGROUND: Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a painful and progressive dental disease that mainly affects the incisors and canine teeth of aged horses. Diagnosis is based on radiographs to detect early stages of the disease. EOTRH is probably underdiagnosed and its prevalence in Germany unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine the radiological prevalence of EOTRH in a large horse population in Berlin-Brandenburg, Germany. STUDY DESIGN: Prevalence study. METHODS: The study population (142 horses) consisted of all horses 10 years and older

Tooth resorption in the Swedish Eurasion lynx (Lynx lynx).

The etiology of tooth resorption in the domestic cat remains unknown. The high prevalence and progressive nature of the disease complicates defining healthy control groups. In order to evaluate the possible influence of various life style changes on the prevalence of tooth resorption, healthy control groups are a prerequisite. This paper presents a prevalence study for tooth resorption in a free-ranging wild felidae population. Skulls from 46 free-ranging Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) were examined. The age of the animals had previously been estimated based on cementum annuli in the maxillary righ

[Bone resorption in orthodontic tooth movement: an attempted schematization].

The osteoclast is the major cellular agent of bone resorption. Hormonal stimulation of bone resorption is indirect and depends on the osteoblastic function. Protease production is the final common pathway through which osteoblastic cells initiate osteoclastic resorption. Exposition of the mineralised matrix and contact with the osteoclasts always comes before resorption, regardless of the stimulating agent involved in the resorption process. In orthodontic conditions, production and activation of osteoclasts may be attained through different ways. Inflammation subsequent to tissue damage and b

Bis-enoxacin inhibits bone resorption and orthodontic tooth movement.

UNLABELLED: Enoxacin inhibits binding between the B-subunit of vacuolar H(+)-ATPase (V-ATPase) and microfilaments, and also between osteoclast formation and bone resorption in vitro. We hypothesized that a bisphosphonate derivative of enoxacin, bis-enoxacin (BE), which was previously studied as a bone-directed antibiotic, might have similar activities. BE shared a number of characteristics with enoxacin: It blocked binding between the recombinant B-subunit and microfilaments and inhibited osteoclastogenesis in cell culture with IC50s of about 10 µM in each case. BE did not alter the relative e

Herpes zoster associated with tooth resorption and periapical lesions.

A 72-year-old woman presented with multiple periapical lesions and resorption of teeth in a single quadrant 17 years after an attack of herpes zoster (shingles) of the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve. It is possible that cases of tooth resorption that were previously classified as idiopathic may have a viral aetiology and we suggest that these patients should be asked about a previous attack of shingles.

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the maxilla--an association with tooth resorption.

The aneurysmal bone cyst is an uncommon lesion of the jaws. Cases involving the maxilla have been reported infrequently. Despite uncertainty as to the aetiology of the aneurysmal bone cyst, it is regarded as a benign lesion. Conservative surgical treatment with regular postoperative follow-up is recommended. The case described here presented with tooth mobility resulting from extensive root resorption. A review of the literature reveals that significant root resorption is not a commonly reported feature of aneurysmal bone cysts. For the present case we interpret the evidence as supporting a di

Tooth root resorption induced in rats by diphenylhydantoin and parathyroidectomy.

Changes in bone, cartilage and the dentition in animals and man following the administration of anticonvulsant drugs resemble those seen in hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism. Groups of 21-day-old rats were treated with diphenylhydantoin, parathyroidectomized, or made hypocalcaemic with a calcium-deficient diet. Histological examination revealed extensive resorption of cementum and dentine in the molars of the drug-treated and parathyroidectomized rats, but not in the hypocalcaemic or control groups. Localization of injected tetracycline by fluorescence showed that the resorption

Endodontic Reapproach in a Tooth With External Resorption: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Endodontists face various challenges, and some factors are associated with endodontic treatment failure, such as the presence of resistant microorganisms resulting from inefficient disinfection and nonadhesive coronary sealing. The quality of the execution of the operative protocols, cautious irrigation, and the presence of a hermetic seal from the crown to the apex lead to successful endodontic retreatment. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study approached a female patient, aged 30 years. The data obtained from the literature were collected from PubMed, SciELO, and Goo

A conserved tooth resorption mechanism in modern and fossil snakes.

Whether snakes evolved their elongated, limbless bodies or their specialized skulls and teeth first is a central question in squamate evolution. Identifying features shared between extant and fossil snakes is therefore key to unraveling the early evolution of this iconic reptile group. One promising candidate is their unusual mode of tooth replacement, whereby teeth are replaced without signs of external tooth resorption. We reveal through histological analysis that the lack of resorption pits in snakes is due to the unusual action of odontoclasts, which resorb dentine from within the pulp of

Root resorption of a partially erupted tooth: a case report.

This article reports a case of a maxillary second premolar which on presentation was partially erupted, and which resisted attempts at orthodontic extrusion. The crown of the tooth was eventually restored using an adhesive composite onlay technique. The patient subsequently complained of pain and the root of the tooth showed radiographic evidence of resorption. The root of the extracted tooth had a vital pulp but massive external resorption was evident, with repair with bone-like material.

Bafilomycin A1 in bone resorption and tooth eruption in dogs.

Tooth eruption depends on bone resorption to form an eruption pathway. We have previously shown that a 2-wk local infusion of bafilomycin A1, an inhibitor of vacuolar H(+)-ATPases in osteoclasts, into the crypts of erupting mandibular premolars in dogs blocks bone resorption during this period and eruption of these teeth is delayed for 8 wk. Here we report the limits of inhibition of resorption that still permit eruption of these teeth. In 3 dogs 10(-6) M bafilomycin was delivered by osmotic minipumps early (18 wk) in eruption to the fourth premolar for 1, 3 or 4 wk. Radiographs taken at weekl

Contact microradiographic analysis of feline tooth resorptive lesions.

Feline tooth resorptive lesions were studied using contact microradiographic analysis of ground sections. Contact microdiagram films were developed with a PIAS-imaging device, and decalcification patterns were evaluated, revealing a clear boundary between normal tissue and the resorptive area, which was different from the image of dental caries in humans. By contrasting analysis, decalcification signs appearing in human caries were not observed in feline resorptive lesions.
