Malodor reductions and improved oral hygiene by toothbrushing and mouthrinsing.

OBJECTIVE: This clinical study compared the effects of an antibacterial regimen, comprising a triclosan toothpaste and a 0.075% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mouthrinse, on malodor, self-reported malodor, and oral hygiene measures such as dental plaque, gingivitis, and bleeding relative to brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At baseline, 36 subjects were evaluated for malodor (9-point organoleptic scale [OLT]), dental plaque (Turesky modification of Quigley-Hein; PI), gingivitis (Lφe-Silness; GI) and bleeding (Ainamo and Bay; BI) and randomized to (1) tooth brushing w

Passive toothbrushing-induced seizures: report of a severely disabled girl.

Toothbrushing-induced seizures are rare reflex seizures triggered by the brushing of one's own teeth. We encountered an 11-year-old girl with severe mental retardation, hypotonic cerebral palsy and epilepsy who presented with toothbrushing-induced seizures. She had had spontaneous brief tonic seizures several times a day since the age of 1 year and 2 months and started presenting with the same type of seizures induced by toothbrushing from the age of 8 years. As she could not brush her teeth by herself due to her disabilities, her mother brushed her teeth daily for her. The interictal EEG show

The effect of toothbrushing frequency, toothbrushing hand, sex and social class on the incidence of plaque, gingivitis and pocketing in adolescents: a longitudinal cohort study.

Reported toothbrushing frequency and the effect of toothbrushing frequency, toothbrushing hand, sex and social class on the incidence of plaque and periodontal disease in a group of 720 adolescents examined at age 11-12 years and again at 15-16 years is presented. At 11-12 years, the mean toothbrushing frequency was 11.5 times per week. By age 15-16 years, it had risen to 13.3 times per week. Children from social class I were less likely to brush once per day or less and more likely to brush twice daily than those from social class V. At both examinations, consistently low negative correlation

Endoscopic Removal of Multiple Toothbrushes: A Case Report.

Foreign body ingestion is a common emergency that necessitates endoscopic intervention. Although many foreign bodies are easily removed, removal of magnets, blades, barbs, and unusually shaped objects, such as toothbrushes is challenging. Toothbrush ingestion may potentially cause complications such as pressure ulcers and perforations. We present a rare case of a 26-year-old woman with schizophrenia, who ingested multiple foreign bodies but was asymptomatic. Radiography showed multiple toothbrushes in the stomach. Emergency non-sedated endoscopy revealed eight toothbrushes in the stomach; five

An Adult Case of Pharyngeal Injury Caused by Toothbrush.

Most toothbrush-induced oral injuries occur in children and are relatively shallow, involving the oral mucous membranes and musculature, but rarely deeper layers. Here, the management of an adult case of pharyngeal injury caused by a toothbrush is discussed. A man fell while brushing his teeth, and his toothbrush stuck in his throat. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a toothbrush stuck in the left parapharyngeal space, reaching the subcutaneous tissue of the posterior neck. The toothbrush was surgically removed because blind removal could damage major cervical arterioles and nerves.

Bacterial contamination and decontamination of toothbrushes after use.

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of bacterial contamination of toothbrushes after use and the efficacy of chlorhexidine and Listerine in decontaminating toothbrushes. The effectiveness of covering a toothbrush head with a plastic cap in preventing contamination was also evaluated. It was found that 70% of the used toothbrushes were heavily contaminated with different pathogenic microorganisms. Use of a cap leads to growth of opportunistic microorganisms like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which may cause infection in the oral cavity. Overnight immersion of a toothbrush in chlorhe

Laboratory evaluations of toothbrush interproximal penetration ratios.

Access to interproximal tooth surfaces by toothbrush bristles has been associated with plaque removal. The ability of toothbrushes to assess the interproximal area was assessed with a new laboratory apparatus by measuring the extent of bristle-to-tooth contact in simulated toothbrushing with ink-coated toothbrush bristles. Toothbrush types evaluated were the bi-level trim Advanced Design Reach Soft, the ripple trim Crest Complete Large Soft, the flat trim Colgate Plus Full Head Adult Soft, and the flat trim Oral-B 35. Six replicates of each toothbrush were tested. Denture teeth in a Columbia D

[Habit patterns in the use of the manual toothbrush. 1].

It is the goal of this study to quantitatively assess the habit patterns of toothbrushing. In the course of nine sessions such variables as force, duration, technique (scrubbing, rotating, or sweeping) as well as the sequence of brush positions and the number of changes of brushing sites were determined in 85 men and women, who were neither motivated nor instructed to maintain oral hygiene. The "force of habit" was an unexpectedly dominant factor, the least variations being observed in the brushing technique. On the other hand, a comparison of the degrees of habit of patients with and without

Toothbrush bristle density: relationship to plaque removal.

A double-blind, parallel, controlled study was conducted to determine the effect of toothbrush bristle density (total number of bristles divided by the brush head area) in removing plaque from tooth surfaces. Ninety subjects (29 males, 61 females), aged 18-65, were randomly assigned to one of three groups using the Sensodyne Search 4-Rowa toothbrush modified to have the following bristle densities: A (4.5 bristles per mm2); B (8.3 bristles per mm2); or C (11.8 bristles per mm2). The average trim height of the bristles was 10.77 mm. Subjects brushed without any dentifrice once a day for 7 days

A study to assess the safety and tolerability of three toothbrushes.

This study evaluated the oral soft tissue safety and tolerability of an experimental powered toothbrush (Crest SpinBrush Pro) compared to two leading manual toothbrushes: an advanced-design manual toothbrush (Oral-B CrossAction) and a flat-trimmed toothbrush (Oral-B 40 Indicator). Manual brushes are generally viewed as safe for use, and as such are appropriate controls. A total of 140 subjects was enrolled in this single-center, randomized, examiner-blind parallel study over a four-week test period. Subjects were instructed to brush in their normal manner, twice per day for 60 seconds per use.

[Removability of tooth deposits by cleaning with toothbrushes and toothpaste].

The abrasion strength of the exogenous pellicle (EP) was investigated in in vitro experiments on extracted human teeth. The aim of the study was to elucidate the effect of daily brushing on the EP. EP-coated tooth specimens were cleansed under in vivo-like conditions. Five toothpastes with different degrees of abrasiveness were variously diluted with artificial saliva. The evaluation was done on the transmission electron microscope. The individual toothpastes differed significantly with respect to their abrasive effect on EP, which extended from only a slight effect on EP, which extended from

Association of toothbrushing, dental flossing, and interdental brushing with stroke risk.

OBJECTIVES: Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally. While daily toothbrushing is widely promoted for oral hygiene, the preventive impact of adjunctive oral hygiene practices, such as dental flossing and interdental brushing, on stroke risk remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between comprehensive oral hygiene behaviors and the risk of stroke. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening cohort. A total of 98,866 adults aged ≥40 years who underwent bot
