Skin feel in the brain: Oscillatory dynamics of active touch are modulated by commercial soap products.

Previous research has demonstrated changes in neural oscillations associated with varying levels of roughness during active-touch exploration of surfaces. In the present study, we aimed to investigate changes in neural oscillatory activity and softness perception during touch exploration of skin. Two experiments were conducted. Study 1 evaluated active touch of artificial skin samples mounted to a purpose-built touch sensor, whereas Study 2 investigated active stroking of one's own forearm. In both experiments, the substrates were treated with commercially available bar soaps to deliver either

Efficient tactile encoding of object slippage.

When grasping objects, we rely on our sense of touch to adjust our grip and react against external perturbations. Less than 200 ms after an unexpected event, the sensorimotor system is able to process tactile information to deduce the frictional strength of the contact and to react accordingly. Given that roughly 1,300 afferents innervate the fingertips, it is unclear how the nervous system can process such a large influx of data in a sufficiently short time span. In this study, we measured the deformation of the skin during the initial stages of incipient sliding for a wide range of frictiona

Shrinking the Skin: Motion Results in Compressive Mislocalization of Stimuli Applied 10 s Post-Motion.

Localizing touch on the skin requires integration of multiple spatial signals, including reference landmarks and motion cues. It is well known that motion patterns can bias the perceived endpoint of motion. However, it is unknown whether static touch presented post-motion is also distorted. To investigate this, we presented space-changing motion patterns and tested position perception 1 s and 10 s post-motion. We used a brush moving along the forearm at 15 cm s-1, brushing 4.5 cm skin patches near the elbow and near the wrist, skipping a 10-cm long metal-shielded patch in the middle ('numb spo

Synthetic Tactile Sensor for Macroscopic Roughness Estimation Based on Spatial-Coding Contact Processing.

Traditional tactile sensors primarily measure macroscopic surface features but do not directly estimate how humans perceive such surface roughness. Sensors that mimic human tactile processing could bridge this gap. This study proposes a method for predicting macroscopic roughness perception based on a sensing principle that closely resembles human tactile information processing. Humans are believed to assess macroscopic roughness based on the spatial distribution of subcutaneous deformation and resultant neural activities when touching a textured surface. To replicate this spatial-coding mecha

Hypnotic suggestions cognitively penetrate tactile perception through top-down modulation of semantic contents.

Perception is subject to ongoing alterations by learning and top-down influences. Although abundant studies have shown modulation of perception by attention, motivation, content and context, there is an unresolved controversy whether these examples provide true evidence that perception is penetrable by cognition. Here we show that tactile perception assessed as spatial discrimination can be instantaneously and systematically altered merely by the semantic content during hypnotic suggestions. To study neurophysiological correlates, we recorded EEG and SEPs. We found that the suggestion "your in

A Somatosensory Computation That Unifies Limbs and Tools.

It is often claimed that tools are embodied by their user, but whether the brain actually repurposes its body-based computations to perform similar tasks with tools is not known. A fundamental computation for localizing touch on the body is trilateration. Here, the location of touch on a limb is computed by integrating estimates of the distance between sensory input and its boundaries (e.g., elbow and wrist of the forearm). As evidence of this computational mechanism, tactile localization on a limb is most precise near its boundaries and lowest in the middle. Here, we show that the brain repur

Contact evolution of dry and hydrated fingertips at initial touch.

Pressing the fingertips into surfaces causes skin deformations that enable humans to grip objects and sense their physical properties. This process involves intricate finger geometry, non-uniform tissue properties, and moisture, complicating the underlying contact mechanics. Here we explore the initial contact evolution of dry and hydrated fingers to isolate the roles of governing physical factors. Two participants gradually pressed an index finger on a glass surface under three moisture conditions: dry, water-hydrated, and glycerin-hydrated. Gross and real contact area were optically measured

Getting in touch: A neural model of comforting touch.

Comforting touch involves contact distress-alleviating behaviors of an observer towards the suffering of a target. A growing number of studies have investigated the effects of touch on pain attenuation, focusing on the (toucher), the target (comforted) or both. Here we synthesize findings of brain mechanisms underlying comforting touch in the target and toucher to propose an integrative brain model for understanding how touch attenuates distress. Building on evidence from the pain and distress literatures, our model applies interchangeably to pain and distress regulation. We describe comfortin

Stop touching your face! A systematic review of triggers, characteristics, regulatory functions and neuro-physiology of facial self touch.

Spontaneous face touching (sFST) is an ubiquitous behavior that occurs in people of all ages and all sexes, up to 800 times a day. Despite their high frequency, they have rarely been considered as an independent phenomenon. Recently, sFST have sparked scientific interest since they contribute to self-infection with pathogens. This raises questions about trigger mechanisms and functions of sFST and whether they can be prevented. This systematic comprehensive review compiles relevant evidence on these issues. Facial self-touches seem to increase in frequency and duration in socially, emotionally

Abnormal and collateral innervations of sympathetic and peripheral sensory fields associated with a case of causalgia.

A 41-year-old female developed spontaneous burning pain (causalgia) and stimulus-induced dysesthesia (allodynia) of the dorso-lateral part of her right foot following trauma. An L3 and L4 sympathectomy eliminated the spontaneous burning pain for only 1 year, but did not affect the stimulus-induced dysesthesia. We evaluated her two years post-sympathectomy with grouped sequential anesthetic blocks and sensory testing. Sympathetic blocks at L1 and L2 eliminated the burning pain and normalized heat perception from baseline hyperalgesia, indicating that the causalgia had been reactivated via more

Seeing or not seeing where your hands are.

Previous findings have demonstrated the existence of a visual peripersonal space centered on the hand in humans and its modulatory effects on tactile perception. A strong modulatory effect of vision on touch perception was found when a visual stimulus was presented near the hand. In contrast, when the visual stimulus was presented far from the hand, only a weak modulatory effect was found. The aim of the present study was to verify whether such cross-modal links between touch and vision in the peripersonal space centered on the hand could be mediated by proprioceptive signals specifying the cu

Haptic-Sound Analysis of Materials' Clustering Based on Tool Tip Tapping Exploration.

Tapping surfaces with a tool tip elicits both sound and haptic information. Sound and haptic information is captured by a microphone and an accelerometer attached to the tip, respectively. In relation to the task of distinguishing objects, this paper investigates the following two questions: (1) how do both the signals (sound and acceleration) help us to assess the surface individually? (2) How does the integration of both modalities affect this assessment? We approach the problem of texture assessment as an unsupervised learning problem. For this purpose, perceptual filter banks are designed

Electromechanical model for object roughness perception during finger sliding.

Touch allows us to gather abundant information in the world around us. However, how sensory cells embedded in the fingers convey texture information into their firing patterns is still poorly understood. Here, we develop an electromechanical model for roughness perception by incorporating main ingredients such as voltage-gated ion channels, active ion pumps, mechanosensitive channels, and cell deformation. The model reveals that sensory cells can convey texture wavelengths into the period of their firing patterns as the finger slides across object surfaces, but they can only convey a limited r

Neuropsychiatric considerations in treating anorexia nervosa patients with osteopathic manipulative medicine: a narrative review.

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) has a growing recognition in serving as an effective treatment to promote adaptation and homeostasis of the body by addressing musculoskeletal, neural, vascular, and lymphatic structures to promote self-healing and regulation. OMM can treat the musculoskeletal tension and sympathetic hyperactivity resulting from the increased cortisol response and hypersensitivity found in varying psychiatric illnesses, including anorexia nervosa (AN). This paper addresses the considerations necessary for treating AN patients with OMM, emphasizing the need to evaluate th

BIVIP: a competitive neural network for bilateral visuo-haptic processing.

Visuo-haptic interactions are gaining interest in perception research because of their relevance to robotics and rehabilitation. While the benefits of integrating concurrent visuo-tactile cues are well-documented, the temporal dynamics of competitive interactions between vision and touch remain less understood. Building on extant empirical evidence of unilateral intersensory switching, we ask whether bilateral detection of visual and tactile stimuli can be explained by cross-sensory competition and explore the underlying sensorineural dynamics via a multi-level neural network model. Tested aga

When in Doubt, Touch Is More Convincing Than Vision.

We sometimes feel compelled to touch objects after having looked at them. Is this because touch gives us more accurate information, or is it simply because we tend to trust what we feel more than what we see? To disentangle these possibilities, participants were subjected to a variant of the 'Vertical-Horizontal' illusion where the length of a vertical bar is consistently overestimated relative to the length of a horizontal bar. Our variant focuses on points of subjective equality where the bars almost look the same, and possesses two key characteristics: it creates ambiguity as stimuli can be

Maternal voice contingency affects tactile habituation in full-term newborns.

Multisensory interactions are central to early development, yet their influence on newborns' tactile processing remains unclear. In particular, it is unknown whether auditory input interferes with or modulates tactile habituation, and how this depends on voice familiarity and temporal contingency. This study investigated these questions in 96 full-term newborns using a manual habituation-discrimination paradigm across four auditory conditions: silence, recorded stranger voice, recorded maternal voice, and live maternal voice contingent on the infant's object-holding behavior. Infants explored

Distinct neural signatures of multimodal resizing illusions.

Illusory body resizing typically uses multisensory integration to change the perceived size of a body part. Previous studies associate these multisensory body illusions with frontal theta oscillations and parietal gamma oscillations for dis-integration and integration of multisensory signals, respectively. However, recent studies also support illusory changes of embodiment from unimodal visual stimuli. This preregistered study (N = 48) investigated differences between multisensory visuo-tactile and unimodal visual resizing illusions using EEG, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the

Development and Validation of a Wearable Device to Provide Rich Somatosensory Stimulation for Rehabilitation After Sensorimotor Impairment.

Training sensory discrimination of the skin has the potential to reduce chronic pain due to sensorimotor impairments and increase sensorimotor function. Currently, there is no such device that can systematically provide rich skin stimulation suitable for a training protocol for individuals with amputation or major sensory impairment. This study describes the development and validation of a non-invasive wearable device meant to repeatedly and safely deliver somatosensory stimulations. The development was guided by a structured design control process to ensure the verifiability and validity of t
