Laboratory diagnosis of human toxocariasis.

Toxocariasis is a helminth zoonosis caused by infection with the larvae of Toxocara spp. ascarid worms. Only two species, Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati, are recognised as causative agents of human disease. The best choice for serodiagnosis of the generalised forms of toxocariasis, visceral larva migrans (VLM) or covert toxocariasis, relies upon the initial use of TES-ELISA, after which any positive result should subsequently be tested by Western blotting (WB). Covert toxocariasis is mostly a benign infection, so a large majority of infected subjects are asymptomatic or have very few symptom

[Toxocariasis under the present conditions].

Toxocariasis is today the most widespread zoonotic, helminthic infection in Russia and other countries of the world. A large population of Toxocara has recently inhabited the urban populations of dogs and cats. Therefore toxocariasis canis and toxocariasis cati have shifted from rural areas to cities and megalopolises where Toxocara canis infestation amounts to as much as 100%, without excluding that in the rural populations of dogs. Due to the fact that the number of dogs and cats has considerably increased (20% of adult dogs and 80% of puppies are infected with Toxocara) in our megalopolises

[Ocular toxocariasis. A case report].

CASE REPORT: We present the case of a seven-year-old male with ocular toxocariasis. The fundus of the eye showed a vitritis, as a result of which the retina could not be seen. Following treatment with systemic corticosteroids the condition evolved favorably. However, due to a papillary and peripheral granuloma that raised the macula, a vitrectomy was performed which stabilized the process. DISCUSSION: Ocular toxocariasis is not common in developed countries. The diagnosis is based on funduscopic aspects, serology and IgG positivity of the vitreous. In relation to treatment, as the use of anth

Cutaneous manifestations of human toxocariasis.

Human toxocariasis is a parasitic disease characterized by the presence of larvae of the genus Toxocara in human tissues. T canis and T cati, the adult roundworms of which are found in dog and cat intestines, respectively, are the most common causative agents of the disease. Toxocaral larvae usually cause two severe syndromes: visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans, depending on the location of the larvae. Two other syndromes, covert toxocariasis and common toxocariasis, which are less typical and not as severe, have also been described. During the last two decades, cutaneous manifest

Echographic characteristics of ocular toxocariasis.

Ocular toxocariasis most commonly presents as one of three distinct clinical syndromes: endophthalmitis, localized posterior granuloma, or peripheral granuloma. Using standardized echography, the authors studied 11 toxocariasis patients presenting with one of these syndromes. Common echographic findings were noted in ten of these patients, and included: (1) a solid, high-reflective peripheral mass, (2) a vitreous band or membranes extending between the posterior pole and the mass, and (3) a traction retinal detachment or fold from the posterior pole to the mass. These findings were present in

Sources and seroprevalence of toxocariasis in Turkey.

Toxocariasis in humans is considered a rare disease in Turkey, and the absence of specific symptoms of this disease is probably the main reason for clinicians to underestimate and underdiagnose the disease. Although there are several seroepidemiological studies on visceral larva migrans in the country, a comparison between them is difficult as the serological tests are not standardised. After the introduction of the easily accessible ELISA kit in the market, the number of seroepidemiological studies has increased in which the reported rates ranged between 1% and 56%. Similar to other countries

[Ocular toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis in childhood].

Toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis are parasitic infections that are transmitted by cats and dogs, respectively, to humans, and which may induce posterior uveitis already in childhood. Toxoplasmosis presents as a congenitally or postnatally contracted infection whereas toxocariasis is always an acquired disease. The typical ocular sign of toxoplasmosis is retinochoroiditis, occurring as an active lesion, in most instances, associated with an inactive pigmented scar. In contrast, toxocariasis leads to a choroidal granuloma secondarily involving the retina or an endophthalmitis-like picture. Althoug

[Diagnosis of toxocariasis in uveitis in children].

Seventeen children aged 2 to 13, suffering from uveitis of unknown etiology, were screened for chronic infections, toxocariasis included. Antibodies to Toxocara canis were detected in the blood of two children with negative results of tests for toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, herpetic and cytomegaloviral infections. One of these two suffered from panuveitis, the other from granulomatous chorioretinitis. Both the clinical forms are characteristic of ocular toxocariasis.

[An unusual case of systemic toxocariasis].

Systemic toxocariasis generally causes fever, liver enlargement and lymph node swelling. This is an unusual case report which was initially confused with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis due to the presence of fever, arthralgias, arthritis of the smaller joints, important leukocytosis and hypergammaglobulinemia, besides testing positive for rheumatoid factor type IgM. After finding severe eosinophilia in both the patient's blood as well as in the bone marrow, systemic toxocariasis was diagnosed also finding very high levels of antibodies against Toxocara canis using the ELISA technique. Experimental toxocariasis and hyperactivity in mice.

An observational study using videorecordings and computer-assisted data analysis was undertaken in order to investigate the behaviour of mice infected with larvae of Toxocara canis. The findings indicated that the infection had a marked effect on five readily and reliably differentiable categories of murine behaviour. A marked increase in the number of shorter bouts of each of the five behaviours was also associated with the infection. These results support previous findings and further suggest that T. canis infection affects the way in which mice respond to their environment. In particular th

Ocular toxocariasis: a review of the literature.

Ocular toxocariasis is invasion of the eye by the larvae of the Toxocara canis worm. Since its initial description 31 years ago, many cases involving all segments of the eye have been reported. Most age groups have been affected, although it is generally a childhood disease. Its distribution is worldwide. Several tests have been devised for its detection, but only recently with a degree of success. Many treatments have been proposed, but more evaluation is necessary. This review correlates historical and present knowledge concerning Toxocara. The history, pathophysiology, immunopathology, dist

Toxocariasis in an institution for the mentally retarded.

A seroepidemiologic investigation was conducted in order to determine the cause of an apparent increase in rates of eosinophilia among 1400 institutionalized children during 1976-1977. The annual serologic survey during this period revealed 283 (20%) individuals with eosinophilia that exceeded 600 cells/cu mm of blood. During a five-month period in 1977, five patients who were hospitalized in adjacent wards developed acute pneumonia with eosinophilia. Because laboratory tests of sputum, bone marrow, and stool failed to identify the etiologic agent, it was thought that these pneumonia cases mig

A case report of ocular toxocariasis.

Ocular toxocariasis is prevalent among children. The symptoms and signs may mimic other ocular pathologies such as malignancies and other infectious diseases (such as toxoplasmosis and syphilis). We presented a case of progressive blurring of vision in a single eye of a 9-year-old boy. The presence of anti-toxocara antibody in serum samples helps to confirmation the diagnosis in our patient. Despite of treatment, the boy had lost his vision on the affected eye.

[Systemic toxocariasis in the adult patient].

We report a retrospective review of eight patients (one male), aged 19 to 31 years old, with systemic toxocariasis (visceral larva migrans), seen at the Salvador Hospital of Santiago. Four cases had heart involvement, three had lung involvement and in two, several organs were affected. Seven cases had leukocytosis (range 14, 5 to 160 x 10(9)/l) and all had eosinophilia (35 to 90%). Serum ELISA titers for Toxocara sp were positive in all cases, ranging from 64 to 1000. Six patients were treated with thiabendazole and one with albendazole. Steroids or hydroxiurea were administered to patients wi

[Epidemiological aspects of toxocariasis in Switzerland].

In the regions of Basel, Jura and Zürich (Switzerland) 765 blood donors completed a questionnaire with respect to symptoms, animal contacts and occupation, and their sera were tested for antibodies to tissue helminths in ELISA. 5.1%, 3.3% and 6.5% exhibited antibodies solely to the respective antigens of Toxocara canis, Fasciola hepatica, and Echinococcus granulosus. Combined seroreactions were mainly observed between F. hepatica and E. granulosus antigens. Reactivity to T. canis antigen was associated with animal contacts at work, as well as contacts with cattle and sheep but not dogs or cats
