[Trace elements and vitamins status during pregnancy].

Pregnancy is associated with physiological changes, particularly with regard to vitamins and trace elements. Crucial nutrients for optimal fetal development include vitamins B9 and B12, as well as minerals such as iron, zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine. Pregnant women with a history of bariatric surgery require special attention. Supplementation adjustment is mainly based on biological monitoring. Unfortunately, there are no validated reference values for the French population. The BIOMAT group of the SFBC aims to establish reference values for some of these parameters, in order to facilitat

Loss of trace elements from agricultural soil.

Soil erosion is a world-wide issue driven by land management and climate change. Research has focussed on soil loss rates from agricultural land. However, the loss of trace elements essential for soil and plant health, or potentially toxic elements that occur as impurities in fertilisers and manures, is poorly understood. This study reports on the loads and forms of copper, cadmium, manganese, nickel, selenium and zinc lost from three types of agricultural systems at Rothamsted Research's North Wyke Farm Platform over five individual storm events. Loads reflected a combination of concentration

Investigation of trace elements in pterygium tissue.

PURPOSE: In this study, we compare the concentrations of the essential trace elements chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), boron (B) and zinc (Zn) in both pterygium and normal conjunctiva and investigate the role they play in the development of pterygium. METHODS: Included in the study were 38 patients with pterygium and 38 control patients in matching age groups who had been operated on for strabismus or cataracts and in whom conjunctiva samples were collected from the nasal limbus area. All conjunctiva samples were kept at -80 °C until the performance of the biochemica

[Interactions of trace elements during their metabolism].

On the basis of the analysis of the literature data and results of own examinations the following conclusion is made: even practically healthy people can have deficiency of trace elements, and the change of trace elements proportion in a ration can influence essentially homeostasis of trace elements with subsequent damage to body functions. The basic cause of deficiency of trace elements in the body is unbalanced relation of various food components intensifying or inhibiting assimilation of trace elements, inadequate consumption of trace elements and their losses during vital activity.

Trace elements in Alzheimer's disease pituitary glands.

Levels of mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), iron (Fe), rubidium (Rb), and zinc (Zn) were measured in the pituitary gland to assess the possibility of a potential difference in the environmental Hg exposure of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and control subjects and levels of other elements of interest in AD. The pituitary gland has been established as a good predictor of environmental Hg exposure. Neutron activation analysis was utilized to determine levels of these elements in pituitary glands of 43 AD subjects and 15 control subjects. No significant differences were observed between the AD and

Trace-elements status in camels. A review.

Data relating to trace-elements status in camels is scarce, from both a clinical and biochemical point of view. Clinical deficiency or toxicity has rarely been described in this species. However, there is a some evidence that camels are sensitive to trace element disorders in the same way as other ruminants. For example, copper deficiency in camels has been reported in East Africa. Normal plasma level is comparable to cattle (70-120 mg/100 mL). Camels appear to maintain zinc levels at a lower value than other domestic ruminants (< 60 micrograms/100 mL). Iron metabolism is more active in the li

Minerals and trace elements in infant nutrition.

Little information is available on absorption and metabolism of minerals and trace elements during infancy. The lack of data is related to the methodological problems involved in these studies. By using stable isotopes as labels, studies can be conducted in infants without introducing exposure to radiation, or any other risk, and studies on bioavailability of minerals and trace elements during early life can therefore be performed. This paper discusses results from studies of trace element/mineral absorption and metabolism in infants, based on stable isotope techniques.

Dietary intake and bioavailability of trace elements.

In order to assess the nutritional importance of trace elements, it is relevant to consider the factors regulating their metabolism. One of the most important factors is the true intake level. Conventional techniques such as diet history and interview studies in conjunction with standard food tables do not provide the true intake levels from prepared meals. Employing the duplicate portion technique, we have investigated the dietary intake of trace elements in prepared meals consumed by children, adults, and elderly in Sweden. The results indicate that the intake of potassium, magnesium, zinc,

Interactions between essential trace and ultratrace elements.

Fully crossed, factorially arranged experiments showed that, under defined conditions, interactions occur between nickel and iron, nickel and copper, arsenic and zinc, and possibly vanadium and chromium. Nickel and iron interacted when dietary iron was supplemented as ferric sulfate only. Signs of nickel deprivation were more severe when dietary iron was low; or the signs of moderate iron deficiency were more severe when dietary nickel was deficient. When iron was supplemented to the diet as a 60% ferric-40% ferrous sulfate mixture, nickel and iron apparently did not interact. The findings sug

Trace elements in psoriasis presentation and treatment.

This systematic literature review examines the relationship between psoriasis and trace metals to elucidate the pathogenesis of this condition, and to explore their potential use as a new route of treatment. Searches were primarily conducted in three databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. The initial search resulted in over 100 articles which were manually assessed by the researchers to determine relevancy. Articles were only included if they were published within the last 12 years and were held to the standards of Boote and Biele's Literature Review Rubric to assess their quality. Of the rele

Therapeutic Use of Trace Elements in Dermatology.

Trace elements (microminerals) play a role in many physiological functions, including hormone production and cellular growth. However, their importance in diagnosing and treating dermatologic disease has not been well examined. In this review, we discuss the functions, sources, and recommended requirements of each micromineral. In addition, we analyze the systemic and dermatological manifestations associated with micromineral imbalances. The pathogenesis of genodermatoses, such as Wilson disease, Menkes disease, acrodermatitis enteropathica, and allergic dermatitis, are also discussed. Include

The Impact of Trace Elements on Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative disease characterized by cartilage degradation, synovial inflammation, subchondral sclerosis and osteophyte formation. It has a multifactorial etiology with potential contributions from heredity, endocrine function, abnormal mechanical load and nutrition. Of particular considerations are trace element status. Several trace elements, such as boron and magnesium are essential for normal development of the bone and joint in human. While cadmium correlates with the severity of OA. The present review focuses on the roles of trace elements (boron, ca
