Association between pelvic floor care practices and symptoms in female track and field athletes: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Maximal sports performance requires sustained physical effort that challenges the structures and functions of the pelvic floor (PF), particularly in high-impact disciplines such as track and field. Despite the specific daily demands faced by female athletes, no studies to date have explored the influence of these habits on PF symptoms. This study aimed to describe the most frequent toileting and training habits related to the PF and to evaluate their association with pelvic floor dysfunctions (PFD) in female athletes. METHODS: A total of 281 female track and field athletes partici

Relationship between hamstring strains and leg muscle strength. A follow-up study of collegiate track and field athletes.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the relationship between hamstring strains and leg muscle strength. The bilateral isometric extensions and flexion maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of knee and hip were measured among 64 collegiate track and field athletes (128 legs). The values of MVC per body-weight, flexion to extension ratio and bilateral legs imbalance index were calculated as the parameters for the investigation. The follow-up research was performed within the following two years. Among the 64 subjects (128 legs): 26 subjects (31 legs), 24.2 percent had suffered from hams

Effects of age on intramuscular fascicle kinematics of the medial gastrocnemius muscle of track and field masters athletes.

Aging results in a decline in muscle mass and intrinsic mechanical properties, yet its impact on intramuscular force transmission and fascicle kinematics remains poorly understood. We investigated whether age, sex, and habitual high-intensity athletic training modulate medial gastrocnemius (GM) muscle mechanics in 172 competitive masters athletes (n = 108 male, n = 64 female; aged 35-90 yr). Participants performed ramp plantar flexion to maximum voluntary contraction, whereas GM architecture was assessed via B-mode ultrasound. Fascicle length, pennation angle, fascicle rotation, and strain wer

Hamstring muscles' function deficit during overground sprinting in track and field athletes with a history of strain injury.

In this study, we aimed to clarify the characteristics of neuromuscular function, kinetics, and kinematics of the lower extremity during sprinting in track and field athletes with a history of strain injury. Ten male college sprinters with a history of unilateral hamstring injury performed maximum effort sprint on an athletic track. The electromyographic (EMG) activity of the long head of the biceps femoris (BFlh) and gluteus maximus (Gmax) muscles and three-dimensional kinematic data were recorded. Bilateral comparisons were performed for the EMG activities, pelvic anterior tilt angle, hip an

Hamstring rehabilitation in elite track and field athletes: applying the British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification in clinical practice.

RATIONALE: Hamstring injuries are common in elite sports. Muscle injury classification systems aim to provide a framework for diagnosis. The British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification (BAMIC) describes an MRI classification system with clearly defined, anatomically focused classes based on the site of injury: (a) myofascial, (b) muscle-tendon junction or (c) intratendinous; and the extent of the injury, graded from 0 to 4. However, there are no clinical guidelines that link the specific diagnosis (as above) with a focused rehabilitation plan. OBJECTIVE: We present an overview of the gener

Comparison of vertical jump performance between the Maasai, track and field athletes, and non-athletes: a cross-sectional study.

The Maasai are known for their unique customs, including dancing, singing, and jumping. The tribe’s traditional jumping rituals, performed by young warriors called ‘Morani,’ demonstrate their strength and skill through repetitive hops, often lasting several hours. These jumps are comparable to the countermovement jumps (CMJ) of elite Western athletes. This study compared different types of jumps (CMJ), squat jump (SJ) and repetitive hops) among three groups: (a) Maasai (n = 30), (b) Slovenian high-jump athletes and sprinters (n = 20), and (c) non-athletes in Slovenia (n = 20). Medial gastrocnemius stiffness contributes to active ankle joint stiffness and ground contact time in trained track-and-field athletes.

PURPOSE: Minimizing ground contact time is important for maximizing stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) performance. However, intrinsic mechanical factors that enable short contact times remain unclear. This study examined whether ankle joint intrinsic stiffness and plantar flexion rate of torque development (RTD) are associated with rebound jump performance, and whether plantar flexor stiffness contributes to these joint-level properties. METHODS: Twenty-four highly trained male track-and-field athletes performed repetitive rebound jumps. Ankle joint intrinsic stiffness was assessed via short-ran

Vulnerability and stressors on the pathway to depression in a global cohort of young athletics (track and field) athletes.

This research set out to identify pathways from vulnerability and stressors to depression in a global population of young athletes. Retrospective data were collected at age 18-19 years from Athletics athletes (n = 1322) originating from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. We hypothesised that sports-related and non-sports-related stressors in interaction with structural vulnerability instigate depression. Path modelling using Maximum likelihood estimation was employed for the data analysis. Depression caseness and predisposition were determined using the WHO-5 instrument. Thirty-s

Using Field Based Data to Model Sprint Track Cycling Performance.

Cycling performance models are used to study rider and sport characteristics to better understand performance determinants and optimise competition outcomes. Performance requirements cover the demands of competition a cyclist may encounter, whilst rider attributes are physical, technical and psychological characteristics contributing to performance. Several current models of endurance-cycling enhance understanding of performance in road cycling and track endurance, relying on a supply and demand perspective. However, they have yet to be developed for sprint-cycling, with current athlete prepar

Tracking with a restricted field of view: performance and eye-head coordination aspects.

Vision through a restricted field of view (RFOV) is becoming increasingly common in aviation with the use of helmet mounted displays. Our first experiment investigated the influence of a narrow (20 degrees) binocular RFOV on performance during head-free visuo-manual tracking of a wide range (+/- 85 degrees) horizontally moving target. Second, the effects of two levels of RFOV (20 degrees, 70 degrees) on a similar tracking task presented with various eccentricities were compared to full field of view (FOV). Eye and head movement around the yaw axis were recorded and analyzed versus head-free vi

Comparative analysis of body composition and pulmonary function in elite male deaf endurance athletes - track and field and road cycling.

The physiological determinants of respiratory function in elite athletes with hearing impairment remain unexplored. It is unknown whether sport-specific adaptations or the unique neurophysiology of deafness primarily govern their pulmonary performance, and if standard spirometric criteria are applicable. This study aimed to conduct the first comprehensive multivariate characterization of anthropometric and training-related predictors of pulmonary function in elite deaf athletes, comparing disciplines with contrasting physiological demands. Thirty-three elite male deaf athletes (track-and-field

Predicting athletic performance in track and field athletes based on wearable physiological and psychological indicators: an interpretable machine learning study.

Track-and-field performance fluctuates week to week under the joint influence of training load, recovery, autonomic regulation, and psychological readiness, and wearables now enable continuous physiological monitoring; however, whether bodily signals and readiness markers contribute differently to performance prediction across technical and physical events remains unclear. In a prospective longitudinal study, 132 competitive track-and-field athletes (71 physical-event, 61 technical-event) were monitored over a planned 14-week athlete-week design. One-week lagged morning LnRMSSD, resting heart

Team- or Reward-Induced Effort Gains in Track and Field Relays? A Replication and Extension of Schleu et al. (2019).

In 2019, Schleu et al. showed that 400-m runners at major championships exhibited team effort gains-they ran faster in the relay than in the individual competition. However, due to low statistical power, it remains unclear whether these findings are replicable. In a replication and extension of this study, we wanted to find out whether its findings replicate in a sample of 1,718 observations from 1,270 U.S. college athletes and whether effort expenditure is driven by working in a team or the chance of valuable outcomes in the relay. As shown by linear mixed modeling and regression analyses, ru

Changes in Passive Muscle Stiffness Following Biceps Femoris Strain Injury in Track-and-Field Athletes: Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Analyses.

A history of muscle strain injury has consistently been identified as one of the strongest risk factors for future muscle strain injuries. However, information on the characteristics associated with a history of muscle strain injury is limited. This study aimed to examine whether passive muscle stiffness changes following biceps femoris long head (BFlh) strain injury in track-and-field athletes through cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. In Study 1 (cross-sectional), 13 male track-and-field athletes with unilateral BFlh strain injury history underwent passive BFlh stiffness assessment u
