"You Pinch It With the Nail Clipper, and You Kill It": A Reflexive Thematic Analysis of How Maya Families Prevent and Manage Tick Bites in Yucatan, Mexico.

In peasant livelihoods, families are regularly exposed to ectoparasites such as ticks, and thus to the diseases they carry. Little is known about how rural families' knowledge influences health in domestic and community environments. We applied reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) to family preventative and curative strategies for tick exposure and bites in a Maya community in Yucatan, Mexico. Data were collected over six months via participant observation and 26 semi-structured interviews with fifteen women homemakers, five peasant farmers, three traditional healers, and three biomedical profess

The main objective of this study was to evaluate knowledge and practices of THs regarding HIV in Bukavu. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using quantitative approach was carried out among 71 THs in Bukavu City. The collected data included the following topics: personal and socio-demographic characteristics, HIV knowledge, and infection control practices. Lee Byeong-haeng's Taegeuk Acupuncture and the Debate over the Modernization of Korean Medicine.

This study examines the life and scholarly achievements of Lee Byeong-haeng (1906-1975), who passed the Qualifying Examination for Korean Medical Doctors in 1954 and subsequently established himself as both a clinician and a theorist. By exploring one dimension of the debate over the "modernization" of traditional Korean medicine in which Lee played a significant role, the study seeks to illuminate the intellectual shifts that shaped the 1960s and 1970s, formative decades in the development of contemporary Korean medicine. The analysis draws on major works by Lee, including Annotation of Midni

Toxic Element Exposure and Bioactivity of Herbalist-Sourced Salvia officinalis: Comprehensive Health Risk Assessment from Eastern Türkiye.

Salvia officinalis (sage) leaves were gathered from five districts in Van Province, Türkiye (İpekyolu, Erciş, Gevaş, Başkale, and Muradiye), and their antioxidant capacity, phenolic composition, heavy metal contamination, mineral content, and structural properties were investigated in this study. The widespread availability of Salvia officinalis in herbal shops and open markets across Türkiye, combined with its extensive use in traditional medicine, led to its selection. This study aimed to evaluate potential health risks associated with herbalist-sourced samples and to establish a model for a

Increasing detection of individuals with tuberculosis through engagement of informal health care providers in Northeastern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Patent and proprietary medicine vendors (PPMVs) and traditional healers (THs) are informal healthcare providers with a significant presence in Nigeria and many parts of Africa. They have established partnerships and trust with community stakeholders and are often the first point of contact for health-seeking, especially in rural communities. Disease programs like malaria have engaged PPMVs, but documentation on efforts to engage these informal providers for tuberculosis (TB) care in Africa is limited. METHODS: We evaluated the impact of an intervention engaging informal health prov

Revisiting Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hong Kong during the Influenza Epidemics in the 1950s and 1960s.

This paper examines the supply and utilization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Hong Kong during the influenza epidemics of the 1950s and 1960s. Existing narratives of TCM in Hong Kong have predominantly framed with within the dichotomy of Western medicine "Xiyi" and Chinese medicine "Zhongyi," portraying TCM as marginalized and nearly wiped out by colonial power. Departing from this binary opposition, this study views TCM as an autonomous space that had never been subjugated by the colonial power which opted for minimal interventionist approach toward TCM. By adopting diachronic and s

[Birth and succession of a current of learning in Korean medicine: the supporting yang current of learning].

In this study, I aim to reveal how Lee Gyoojoons medicine has given birth to a current of learning, the supporting yang current of learning, and describe its historical significance. Before anything, I'd like to throw the question of whether if there were any currents within the traditional Korean medicine. There are no records of medical currents being widely discussed until now in medical history of Korea; however, the current of Lee Jema's sasang medicine is the most noticeable one. Among the contemporaries of Lee Jema, during the late Chosun, there was also another famed medical practition

[Traditional health practitioners and epilepsies in Ivory Coast].

We report the results of a descriptive 3-month observational study concerning the experience and knowledge about epilepsy of 30 traditional health practitioners in the Ivory Coast. Most respondents were men over 30 years of age. They had an average of 14.3 years of professional experience. More than half of respondents (54%) had not attended school. All traditional practitioners knew that epilepsy was a brain disease. For 83.3% of them, the disease was supernatural, due to a curse. These traditional healers knew all the clinical manifestations of generalized tonico-clonic seizure. For over 72%

Interpreting diagnostic tests with continuous results and no gold standard: a common scenario explained using the tuberculin skin test.

Practitioners of evidence-based medicine commonly encounter diagnostic tests with continuous results and no gold standard. In contrast, the traditional critical appraisal teachings assume a binary test (2×2 table) with a gold standard. In this guide, we use the example of the tuberculin skin test to illustrate a simple approach facilitated by using stratum-specific likelihood ratios and odds of developing future patient-important events. This approach can aid practitioners in the interpretation and application of diagnostic tests to patient care.

Mercury-based traditional herbo-metallic preparations: a toxicological perspective.

This review aims to explore the toxicological aspects of mercury-based herbo-metallic preparations like cinnabar and "Rasasindura" that are primarily composed of mercuric sulfide (HgS). Cinnabar-containing preparations have been used extensively in Indian and Chinese systems of medicine for treatment of chronic ailments like syphilis, high fever, pneumonia, insomnia, nervous disorders, deafness, and paralysis of the tongue. Contrary to Western medicine, which does not promote the use of mercury due to its toxic effects, Indian and Chinese traditional practitioners believe that mercury-based fo
