Fertility management in Taiwanese and African-American women.

This article describes the fertility management experiences of two groups of women that are of cultures close to but different from dominant, mainstream American culture. A discussion of fertility management necessarily must occur within the context of such issues as the values and norms regarding sexual behavior, choice of partners, and childbearing patterns, and the support and resources offered by the social environment.

Australian women and heart disease: trends, epidemiological perspectives and the need for a culturally competent research agenda.

Heart disease commonly manifests as acute coronary syndromes (unstable angina pectoris, or myocardial infarction) and heart failure (HF). These conditions are major causes of morbidity and mortality in Australia and internationally. Australian faces particular challenges in health care delivery given the cultural and ethnic diversity of society and unique issues related to rurality. These factors have significant implications for health care delivery. Following an acute cardiac event women have poorer outcomes: higher mortality rates, higher incidence of complications and greater psychological

Requesting perinatal autopsy: multicultural considerations.

The subject of perinatal autopsy is not frequently seen in the literature. Perinatal loss, particularly stillbirth, frequently remains unexplained, despite current technology and diagnostic procedures. Parents may automatically refuse an autopsy, despite the potentially valuable information it could provide about the current pregnancy and subsequent pregnancies and despite the possible comfort the results could provide for relatives. Other reasons for declining an autopsy could be cultural or religious prohibitions. In addition, healthcare providers sometimes lack the knowledge of circumstance

The effects of cultural diversity on providing health services.

The purpose of the study was to highlight major aspects and problems of cultural diversity in the context of providing health services, and to suggest means for overcoming problems in this context. The major issues discussed were communication as a culture-dependent process, paradigms of relationships between the health professional and the patient, and the potential of various communication features to serve as barriers or bridges between the patient and the health professional. In order to overcome inhibitory effects of cultural diversity on communication, two theoretical approaches were pre

METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 178 Massachusetts-based AA adults assessed tobacco use, cultural attitudes, religiosity, and SN structural and compositional characteristics. RESULTS: Current tobacco use was 51.69%, with hookah at 45.51%. Smoking, p

The Lived Experiences of Hispanic Men in Managing Their Type 2 Diabetes: A Phenomenological Study.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 34 million Americans have diabetes with Hispanics being disproportionately affected. This study explores the lived experiences of Hispanic men managing type 2 diabetes (T2D) to identify social, cultural, and psychological influences on self-management and inform culturally tailored interventions. METHOD: This phenomenological study utilized purposive sampling to explore the lived experiences of Hispanic men (N = 10)
