Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been suggested as a means to reduce the amount of intravenous analgesia/sedation in patients undergoing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). A retrospective analysis of 79 ESWL procedures on 73 consecutive unselected patients was done in an attempt to determine the effectiveness of TENS in reducing the amount of intravenous fentanyl citrate and/or midazolam HCl needed to control pain and anxiety during the ESWL procedure. The study was divided into two parts: (1) all patients receiving TENS (n = 44) versus a non-TENS group (n = 35

The effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical stimulation at acupuncture points for increasing uterine contractions in 20 post-dates pregnant women was assessed in a controlled study. Subjects were randomly assigned to either a treatment condition, consisting of the application via surface electrodes of a 30-Hz current to the points "spleen 6" (lower leg) and "liver 3" (foot), or a placebo condition, in which the equipment was attached but not activated. The frequency and strength of uterine contractions were monitored for 1 hour prior to stimulation and then for the final 2 hours of a 4-hour

Open heart surgery is associated with postoperative sternal pain, which is exacerbated by cough, deep breathing and movement, thus limiting the physical activity of the patient. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) was administered to 40 patients suffering from persistent chest pain immediately following open heart surgery, and to ten other patients complaining of pain between three and eight weeks after operation. The efficacy of TENS was assessed by the subjective recordings, analgesic drug requirement, capability to carry out deep inspirations with an "Incentive Deep Breathing

The adoption of upper limb myoelectric prosthesis is limited by the lack of closed control loop systems. Although the efferent control has already been integrated into these devices, the sensory feedback restoration in the afferent channel still remains an open challenge. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a promising method for generating somatotopic sensory feedback, allowing the closure of the control loop system. The application of this technique is limited by cumbersome and grid-powered electrical stimulators, making them unsuitable for everyday life, whereas most porta

BACKGROUND: Pain associated with claudication in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a key barrier to physical activity, limiting walking ability and impacting quality of life. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) may offer non-pharmacological pain relief and has shown potential to improve walking performance. However, little is known about patients' experiences using TENS in everyday life.
AIM: To explore the lived experience of using TENS at home among individuals with PAD and claudication.
METHODS: Six participants with PAD and claudication received training in the use of a

Occipital neuralgia is the third most common headache syndrome after migraine and tension type headaches. There is no well-established treatment regimen for a reliable cure. The current case presents a 39-year-old woman, diagnosed with occipital neuralgia of idiopathic cause. The condition was difficult to control by conservative or interventional approaches. The patient was started on conventional transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, 3 sessions per week. After the procedure, the patient achieved significant pain relief: 1-2/10 on the numeric rating scale, pain initially being 10/10. W

BACKGROUND: Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of herpes zoster (HZ) and is difficult to treat. The role of antiviral agents and nonpharmacologic procedures in preventing PHN is not entirely clear. Recent retrospective study showed that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may completely prevent PHN. The aim of our study was to identify predictors for PHN and evaluate the treatment with antiviral agents and TENS.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter prospective, randomized intervention study in patients with a new onset of HZ. Immunocompromised patients

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the effect of palmitoylethanolamide + transpolydatin combination in patients with vestibulodynia undergoing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy and to confirm the effectiveness of TENS also in a domiciliary protocol. The study is based on the premise that palmitoylethanolamide + transpolydatin combination may contribute to a down-regulation of mast cell hyperactivity, which is believed to be responsible for the proliferation and sprouting of vestibular pain fibers and the associated hyperalgesia and allodynia.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory, system disease. It commonly affects the small peripheral joints (such as fingers and wrist). The main goals of intervention for RA are preventing joint deformity, preserving joint function, and reducing inflammation and pain. Transelectrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a form of electrotherapy and is thought to produce analgesia according to the gate control theory.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy and safety of TENS in the treatment of RA of the hand. The primary outcomes of interest were relief of grip pain and resting p

We examined the effect of high frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on the onset of brachial plexus block. Three groups of patients scheduled for surgery of the hand had a local anaesthetic block performed with 40 ml mepivacaine 1.5% using the axillary approach. After injection of the local anaesthetic transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation was applied for 15 min either to the median nerve or the ulnar nerve; no stimulation was applied in the control group. Before and for 45 min after, the injection of local anaesthetic touch perception, pin prick, motor strength and skin

The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS; 99 Hz; 250 ms pulses) on H-reflex and spinal spasticity. Considering the reflex hyperexcitability commonly displayed in spinal cord-injured subjects, it was hypothesized that repetitive low threshold afferent stimulation would have an inhibitory effect on the triceps surae H-reflexes which could also be reflected by a decrease in plantarflexor spasticity. Clonus, Achilles tendon reflex and modified Ashworth evaluations were performed on 14 spinal cord-injured subjects prior

The purpose of this article is to provide guidelines for the use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in the differential diagnosis and treatment of facial pain. Most practitioners familiar with electrical modalities are aware that TENS is a physiologically-specific therapy for treating and resolving facial pain related to various neurological and/or myofascial conditions. This article proposes the added use of TENS as a diagnostic tool. The effect on the patient's pain level from the trials of various combinations of rate and width settings provides the practitioner specific

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been used in a variety of acute and chronic painful conditions, but has not been studied in sickle cell pain crises. We compared TENS versus placebo in a randomized, double-blind, cross-over study involving 60 trials in 4 crisis severity categories. TENS electrodes were applied to the area of severest pain and patients' pain ratings and medication usage were evaluated over a 4-hour period. Pain ratings and analgesic requirements at 1 and 4 h from onset of study were similar in the TENS and placebo groups. Patients assessments of overall tr

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) originates from myofascial trigger points (MTPs)- hypersensitive nodules commonly found in the trapezius muscle (TM) that cause pain and functional limitations. While transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a conventional treatment, a novel approach combining electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) with active stretching (AS) has recently been developed (EMS + AS).
METHODS: EMS electrodes were placed transversely across muscle fibers to induce localized contractions and thus greater stretch of MTP-containing regions compared to AS alone. EM

This study aimed to investigate the effect of charge-balanced transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (cb-TENS) in accelerating recovery of the facial function and nerve regeneration after facial nerve (FN) section in a rat model. The main trunk of the left FN was divided and immediately sutured just distal to the stylomastoid foramen in 66 Sprague-Dawley rats. The control group had no electrical stimulus. The other two groups received cb-TENS at 20 Hz (20 Hz group) or 40 Hz (40 Hz group). Cb-TENS was administered daily for seven days and then twice a week for three weeks thereafter. To as
