BACKGROUND/AIMS: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a well-known type of dementia. However, it remains difficult to identify AD in the early stage and to distinguish it from other dementing disorders. We examined glycoproteins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as potential biological markers of AD.
METHODS: CSF samples were collected from AD, other dementia and nondemented patients. Glycoproteins in CSF were detected by lectin blotting using wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), and sugar chain analysis was performed by isoelectric focusing.

BACKGROUND: Transferrins are a group of iron-binding proteins including serum transferrin, lactoferrin and ovotransferrin.
SCOPE OF REVIEW: The structures of transferrins are discussed.
GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE: The typical transferrin molecules are folded into two homologous lobes. X-ray crystallography revealed that each lobe is further divided into two similarly sized domains, and that an iron-binding site is contained within the inter-domain cleft. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) reportedly plays an important role in the progression of malignant neoplasms. In 26 adult patients of an intensive-care ward, the following parameters were controlled for 26 to 35 days under postoperative parenteral feeding: prealbumin, transferrin, and retinol-binding protein, the immunoglobulins IgA, IgM and IgG, total serum protein, Hb content, body-weight and urinary nitrogen elimination. In the early phase and also in the 2nd to 4th postoperative week, prealbumin and transferrin are apparently good indicators for the existence of a catabolic or anabolic metabolic condition.
