Although the neuroanatomy of transgender persons is slowly being charted, findings are presently discrepant. Moreover, the major body of work has focused on Western populations. One important factor is the issue of power and low signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio in neuroimaging studies of rare study populations including endocrine or neurological patient groups. The present study focused on the structural neuroanatomy of a Non-Western (Iranian) sample of 40 transgender men (TM), 40 transgender women (TW), 30 cisgender men (CM), and 30 cisgender women (CW), while assessing whether the reliability of

Purpose: Despite reportedly high rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among transgender people, laboratory-proven prevalence of these infections in this population has not been systematically reviewed. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the medical literature involving laboratory-proven HIV and STI diagnoses among transgender people. Methods: A systematic review of the English literature regarding laboratory-proven HIV and/or STI testing in transgender populations within the last 50 years was performed. Preliminary meta

Compared to HIV research on men who have sex with men, less is known about the risks and vulnerabilities for HIV among Male to Female (MTF) transgender persons, particularly in different geographic regions like Mexico. In Tijuana, Mexico, a border city experiencing a dynamic HIV epidemic, no precedent data exists on the MTF transgender population. Our aims were to estimate HIV prevalence and examine the behaviors and characteristics of the population. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 100 MTF transgender persons recruited through time location sampling in 2012. Participants underwent int

Male-to-female (MTF) transgender women experience a host of psychosocial issues such as discrimination, stigmatization, and marginalization. These challenges often limit economic opportunities, affect mental health, and may place members of this population at an increased risk for HIV infection. This report presents a review of the literature that focuses on risk factors for HIV infection specific to the MTF population. Factors including needle sharing and substance abuse, high-risk sexual behaviors, commercial sex work, health care access, lack of knowledge regarding HIV transmission, violenc

This is the first case report about a transgender professional diver. The purpose of this article is to show the professional adaptations to help him to continue occupational dive and to raise the question of the impact on diving risks of hormonal treatment in this case. He was a 39-year-old man when he began his transition. He had worked as a diver for 9 years before his transition. When he changed to look like a woman, there were a few difficulties in continuing his professional activity. The main difficulty was that he looked like a woman while working with men. Modesty was a crucial issue

BACKGROUND: An overview of existing research on HIV testing among transgender and other gender-diverse (TGD) populations in the United States, critical for developing effective future interventions and research, is missing.
METHODS: Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis, 3 databases (CINAHL, PubMed/Medline, PsycINFO) were searched for studies reporting in English on HIV testing behavior that focused on or included TGD persons, published in the past decade (February 2, 2013 to February 2, 2023). Twenty-six studies were included and extracted using Coviden

PURPOSE: Black and Latinx MSM and transgender POC disproportionately experience new HIV diagnoses. Determining effective HIV prevention methods requires the inclusion of these communities in research and thorough post-trial experience evaluations. This study sought to evaluate the experiences of Black and Latinx MSM and transgender POC in HIV prevention research and identify facilitators and barriers to continued trials participation.
METHODS: A survey was developed in partnership with the community engagement team based on emerging themes during research participant check-ins with the team.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) persons experience health inequities compared to their cisgender peers, which is in part related to limited evidence informing their care. Thus, we aimed to describe the literature informing care provision of TGD individuals.
DATA SOURCE, ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA, AND SYNTHESIS METHODS: Literature cited by the World Professional Association of Transgender Health Standards of Care Version 8 was reviewed. Original research articles, excluding systematic reviews (n = 74), were assessed (n = 1809). Studies where the population of interest

Identifying the geographic hotspots of HIV infection among high-risk populations such as transgender people is critical to ending the HIV epidemic in the United States (U.S.). This study examined the spatial pattern of HIV positivity rate and the associated correlates among transgender persons in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia in the U.S. The data source was the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey (n = 27,715). We conducted spatial analyses, with state as the unit of analysis. We fitted a spatial lag regression model to assess demographic, social, and behavioral risk variables

The present study examined the sexual orientation classification system that was used in the DSM-IV-TR for categorizing those who met the Gender Identity Disorder diagnostic criteria in order to determine the extent to which female-to-male transgender persons (FTMs) differ on psychological variables as a function of sexual orientation. Participants were 605 self-identified FTMs from 19 different countries (83 % U.S.) who completed an internet survey assessing their sexual orientation, sexual identity, symptoms of depression and anxiety, stress (Depression Anxiety Stress Scales), social support

The psychiatric impact of interpersonal abuse associated with an atypical presentation of gender was examined across the life course of 571 male-to-female (MTF) transgender persons from the New York City Metropolitan Area. Gender-related abuse (psychological and physical), suicidality, and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text revision) major depression were retrospectively measured across five stages of the life course using the Life Chart Interview. Among younger respondents (current age of 19-39), the impact of both types of abuse on major depression was extre

Scientific studies demonstrate high rates of HIV infection among male-to-female (MTF) transgender individuals and that stigma and discrimination place MTFs at increased risk for infection. However, there is little research examining how gender roles contribute to HIV risk. This paper reports on in-depth interviews with 20 MTFs attending a community clinic. Data reveal that stigma and discrimination create a heightened need for MTFs to feel safe and loved by a male companion and that in turn places them at a higher risk for acquiring HIV. Male-to-female transgender individuals appear to turn to

Transgender populations in the United States have been impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This systematic review estimates the prevalence of HIV infection and risk behaviors of transgender persons. Comprehensive searches of the US-based HIV behavioral prevention literature identified 29 studies focusing on male-to-female (MTF) transgender women; five of these studies also reported data on female-to-male (FTM) transgender men. Using meta-analytic approaches, prevalence rates were estimated by synthesizing weighted means. Meta-analytic findings indicated that 27.7% (95% confidence interval [CI],

BACKGROUND: Gender affirming hormone therapy is a cornerstone for transgender and gender diverse individuals. We report the first case in the literature of systemic allergic reactions to testosterone therapy and how we succeeded in managing them.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old transgender person assigned female at birth started testosterone therapy to achieve full masculinization. For 14 months, testosterone was administered via transdermal and intramuscular preparations and was well tolerated. However, the individual later developed several angioedematous reactions at different times, desp

Transgender individuals experience lower overall health outcomes than cisgender individuals due to a higher burden of chronic illnesses in this demographic. An early loss in renal function is frequently seen in acute interstitial nephritis (AIN), which is defined by the presence of inflammatory infiltrates and edema inside the interstitium. Infections or medication use can cause interstitial nephritis. In two-thirds of cases, interstitial nephritis caused by drugs is detected. Few people are affected by it, thus, it's thought to be immune-mediated rather than dose-dependent. In this report, a

Transgender populations are considered as a highly vulnerable group to HIV infection. This study aimed to understand structural, personal and socioenvironmental factors and the mechanisms through which these factors facilitate HIV transmission among transgender women (waria) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A qualitative inquiry using one-on-one in-depth interviews was employed to collect data from participants (n = 29). Thematic analysis was used to guide data analysis. Findings showed that poverty in families, a sense of responsibility to support family necessities, limited employment options and l

Multiple sexual partnerships (MSPs) act as a risk factor, increase vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, and contribute to interconnected sexual networks that may facilitate broader transmission not only within high-risk networks but also to their partners. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of MSPs and factors associated with it among Hijra and transgender persons (H/TG) in India. This is a secondary data analysis of H/TG data from the National IBBS survey. The survey was conducted in 14 domains across 11 states of India using probability-based sampling. A tot

CONTEXT: During the conduct of the described demonstration project (2012-2015), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funding standard for HIV testing was 1.0% newly diagnosed positivity in non-health care settings. For linkage to HIV medical care, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy goal was 85%, and the funding standard was 80% (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National HIV/AIDS Strategy had no other quantified goals/standards relevant to the project).
OBJECTIVE: To determine aggregate quantitative results of HIV/STD testing and engagement in HIV care.

BACKGROUND: Across Europe, Canada, and the United States, 22-43 % of transgender (trans) people report a history of suicide attempts. We aimed to identify intervenable factors (related to social inclusion, transphobia, or sex/gender transition) associated with reduced risk of past-year suicide ideation or attempt, and to quantify the potential population health impact.
METHODS: The Trans PULSE respondent-driven sampling (RDS) survey collected data from trans people age 16+ in Ontario, Canada, including 380 who reported on suicide outcomes. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic reg
