Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumors Using Holmium Laser: An Observational Study.

Background Bladder cancer ranks as the ninth most frequently diagnosed malignancy globally. Although conventional treatment, i.e., transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT), remains the gold-standard procedure for early-stage bladder cancer, it carries well-documented risks such as bleeding, perforation, and prolonged catheter dependence. In contrast, holmium laser resection promises several theoretical benefits, namely, lower thermal damage to surrounding tissues, reduced incidence of the obturator nerve reflex, and superior control of intraoperative bleeding. Methodology This cros

Transurethral resection of a bladder trigone leiomyoma: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Bladder leiomyomas are rare and benign tumors of the bladder. They account for 0.43% of all bladder tumors, and only 250 cases have been reported in English literature. Based on the size and localization of the lesion, their symptoms vary considerably. Women seem to be more affected, and obstructive symptoms predominate. Surgical treatment is almost always highly effective, leaving a low recurrence rate. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a clinical case of a 52-year old man with macroscopic hematuria and obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms due to a large bladder trigone leiomyoma

Bladder neck stenosis after transurethral resection of prostate: does size matter?

AIM: To understand the risk factors associated with the incidence of bladder neck stenosis (BNS) after transurethral prostate surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 900 patients who underwent transurethral prostate surgery over a 4-year period. The mean age of the men was 72.3 (47-94) years. The specific outcome data assessed related to BNS, including type of operation performed, resected tissue weight and history of previous surgery in the lower urinary tract. RESULTS: 29 (3.4%) patients developed BNS at a mean of 10.3 (3-33) months, with a mean resected prostatic tissue

Clinical impact of second opinion consultation in bladder biopsies and transurethral resection of bladder tumors.

Accurate evaluation of bladder biopsies and transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBTs) is essential for appropriate clinical management, yet diagnostic variability remains a challenge. We evaluated a cohort of second-opinion consultations (n = 3125) and institutional tissue reviews (n = 754) of bladder biopsies and transurethral resection of tumors (TURBT) performed at our institution. The cohort included 3879 consultations selected from 10,509 bladder specimens evaluated between January 2019 and December 2025. Original diagnoses were compared with consultation diagnoses. Overall, diag

Comparison of hemodynamic profiles in transurethral resection of prostate vs transurethral resection of urinary bladder tumors during spinal anesthesia: a bioimpedance study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) is more frequently associated with perioperative fluid and electrolyte disturbances than transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURT) because of irrigating fluid absorption. Because fluid overload may cause hypertension, we compared the patients' intraoperative hemodynamic profiles (including the incidence of hypertension) during TURP vs TURT, both performed during spinal anesthesia, by using the bioimpedance method. DESIGN: Prospective single-blind study. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENTS: 80 (40 in each group) men, ASA p

Bladder Endometriosis: A Rare Histopathological Entity Diagnosed by Transurethral Resection.

Bladder endometriosis is a rare form of deep infiltrating endometriosis involving the urinary tract, often presenting with nonspecific urinary or pelvic symptoms and mimicking neoplastic conditions. This report describes a 28-year-old nulliparous female who presented with recurrent pelvic discomfort. Imaging revealed a bladder wall lesion near the vesicoureteric junction, prompting transurethral resection. Histopathological examination facilitated the proper diagnosis. The case highlights the need for a comprehensive diagnostic approach in atypical cases of bladder pathology.

[PRIMARY MALIGNANT LYMPHOMA OF THE BLADDER DIAGNOSED BY TRANSURETHRAL BLADDER TUMOR RESECTION: A CASE REPORT].

A 72-year-old woman underwent computed tomography (CT) to identify the underlying cause of thrombocytosis. The CT showed a bladder tumor. Urine cytology was negative. Cystoscopic examination showed a dome-shaped bulge at the right lateral wall of the bladder, suggesting a submucosal tumor. The bladder tumor was immediately resected transurethrally. The histological diagnosis was malignant lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. Positron emission tomography-CT showed no lesions other than the bladder tumor. The patient was diagnosed with primary malignant lymphoma of the bladder. The tumo

Combined percutaneous and transurethral approach to stenoses of the ureteral meatus after transurethral resection for bladder tumor.

A stenosis of the ureteral meatus may result from transurethral resection (TUR) for bladder tumor. Open reconstructive surgery is not recommended because of possible tumor implantation. Preservation of the renal function is the main goal, particularly when chemotherapy with nephrotoxic drugs is planned. Moreover, the patency of the vesicoureteral junction has to be preserved to allow regular inspection of the upper urinary tract for urothelial tumor. The first measure is decompression by nephrostomy. After antegrade cannulation of the stenotic ureteral meatus, a ureteral stent is left for seve

Safety of transurethral resection of bladder tumor in octogenarians: a NSQIP analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To compare rates of 30-day post-operative complications after transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) in octogenarians versus younger patients. METHODS: We conducted a review of the NSQIP database from 2012 to 2022. We included patients undergoing TURBT as the principal procedure, and excluded patients with disseminated cancer, pre-operative sepsis, or who were ventilator-dependent. We conducted multivariate logistic regression modeling to evaluate the association of age (≥ 80 vs. < 80 years) with 30-day post-operative complications, adjusting for confounders. We report

Evaluation of bladder contractility in men undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate.

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: We analyzed preoperative and postoperative urodynamic parameters in 26 patients who underwent transurethral prostatic resection with the aid of a computer program. The parameters URA, W and Wmax were evaluated: URA affords a monitoring of the removal of obstruction, while Wmax and W function monitor changes in detrusor contractility, which appear significant after prostatic resection in obstructed patients. RESULTS: Many patients had a fading contraction, that is detrusor contractility decreased during micturition: in most of them the removal of obstruction restored thi

[Clinical importance of vesico-renal reflux after transurethral resection of bladder tumors].

After any resection of tumors near the ostium you have to expect the vesicoureteral reflux as a complication. If the upper urinary tract is primarily normal, this reflux is of no clinical importance (if of course it is diagnosed and controlled). The resection of the ostium, to be radical, can be done without any doubt. The upper urinary tract is rarely hurted. Concerning out patients it is impossible to see how often the tumor spread in the upper urinary tract by the reflux. However, one must consider it, as one of our cases shows.
