Haematological changes in the laboratory rat Rattus norvegicus infected with Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae).

To study possible indirect effects of the infection with intestinal helminths, 12 Rattus norvegicus (Wistar) were each experimentally exposed to 100 metacercariae of Echinostoma caproni, and blood samples were taken weekly up to 4 weeks post-exposure for comparison with control rats. Values of haematocrit (HCT), red blood cells (RBC), platelets (PLT), white blood cells (WBC), haemoglobin (HGB) and haematimatrix indices, and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentrations (MCHC) were determined. In addition, leucocyte counts, including lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils

Development and Effects of Schistosoma japonicum (Trematoda) on its Intermediate Host, Oncomelania hupensis (Gastropoda).

BACKGROUND: Trematodes belonging to the genus Schistosoma cause schistosomiasis. The relationship between schistosomes and their intermediate hosts varies among snails. This study investigated the effects of S. japonicum on its snail host, Oncomelania hupensis, and cercarial release rythmicity of S. japonicum and the effects of light on it. METHODS: Seven groups of O. hupensis (n = 40 each) were exposed individually to 0 (control), 2, 4, 6, 10, 15, and 20 S. japonicum miracidia. Mortality of the snails was recorded for 10 weeks. Snails in each group were checked for infection at seven weeks p

Comparison of the Benzanthrone Luminophores: They Are Not Equal for Rapid Examination of Parafasciolopsis fasciolaemorpha (Trematoda: Digenea).

Luminescent derivatives of benzanthrone are becoming more useful based on their light-absorbing and fluorescent-emitting properties. Our previous studies showed that luminescent staining properties of the same benzanthrone dye differ for variable parasite samples. Therefore, two types of benzanthrone dyes were prepared. One has a strongly basic amidine group and a halogen atom, and the other has an amide moiety and a tertiary amine group. Trematoda Parafasciolopsis fasciolaemorpha is a liver fluke of a moose (Alces alces) and has a significant influence on the health and abundance of the moose

Molecular phylogeny of Mesometridae (Trematoda, Digenea) with its relation to morphological changes in parasites.

Complete ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) ribosomal DNA sequences were obtained for the six species know at present time within the Mesometridae Poche, 1926. The adult stages are intestinal parasites of herbivorous sparid teleosts. Aligned sequences were analysed with Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Neighbor-Joining phylogenetic methods to infer evolutionary relationships among mesometrid species. The ITS-based phylogeny obtained showed the two Wardula species as a sister group to other Mesometridae, and as compared to morphological data, suggest some general tendencies in the morph

Lepocreadiidae (Trematoda) associated with gelatinous zooplankton (Cnidaria and Ctenophora) and fishes in Australian and Japanese waters.

We examined gelatinous zooplankton from off eastern Australia for lepocreadiid trematode metacercariae. From 221 specimens of 17 species of cnidarian medusae and 218 specimens of four species of ctenophores, infections were found in seven cnidarian and two ctenophore species. Metacercariae were distinguished using cox1 mtDNA, ITS2 rDNA and morphology. We identified three species of Prodistomum Linton, 1910 [P. keyam Bray & Cribb, 1996, P. orientale (Layman, 1930), and Prodistomum Type 3], two species of Opechona Looss, 1907 [O. kahawai Bray & Cribb, 2003 and O. cf. olssoni], and Cephalolepidap

[Serotonin and neuropeptide FMRFamide in the nervous system of Opisthioglyphe ranae (Trematoda: Plagiorchiidae). an immunocytochemical study].

The presence and localization of the serotoninergic and FMRFamidergic structures in the nervous system of the trematode Opisthioglyphe ranae, the marsh frog intestinal parasite, was studied using immunocytochemistry. The serotonin-immunoreactive nerve cells and fibers were revealed in the head ganglia, circular commissure, longitudinal nerve cords and their connective commissures, as well as around the oral and ventral suckers, oesophagus and genital pore. FMRF-specific immunoreactivity was observed in the head ganglia, longitudinal nerve cords and terminal parts of the reproductive system. Th

New species of Neodiplostomum (Trematoda: Diplostomidae) from Argentine Patagonian birds: morphological and molecular characterisation.

This study describes two new species of Neodiplostomum (Trematoda: Diplostomidae) and reports a new lineage parasitising birds in Northwestern Patagonia, Argentina, based on morphological and molecular evidence. Specimens were recovered from the intestines of Falco sparverius, Caracara plancus, Accipiter bicolor, and Strix rufipes between 2001 and 2025. Morphological analyses revealed that the new taxa, herein named Neodiplostomum sparverius n. sp., and Neodiplostomum caracara n. sp., and the unnamed species Neodiplostomum sp. 1 show differences mainly in body segment ratio, sucker size, and v

Characterization of Echinostoma spp. (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae Looss, 1899) infecting ducks in south-eastern Australia.

Waterbirds, are one of the popular game animals and are of significant relevance to parasite spread due to their ability to fly and migrate great distances in relatively short periods of time. In Australia, however, the knowledge of parasites infecting native waterbirds is lacking with some of the last reports occurring over 50 years ago. The study aimed to characterise Echinostoma spp. infecting wild native Australian ducks found in the southern regions of the Murray Darling Basin (MDB). Ducks (n = 98) were collected from southern New South Wales within the MDB catchment. Three different spec

Rumen fluke, Fischoederius elongatus (Trematoda: Gastrothylacidae): Preliminary investigation of suitable conditions for egg hatching.

Various temperatures may have different effects on the distribution of paramphistomes that cause amphistomosis in cattle, including Fischoederius elongatus. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of different temperature treatments on F. elongatus hatching, with specific identification using morphological, histological, and phylogenetic analysis. All specimens were collected from two buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) rumens in a slaughterhouse in Pathum Thani province, Thailand. F. elongatus adults were kept in phosphate buffered saline solution for egg collection. The egg specimens we

Behavioral changes in host foraging: Experiments with Clinostomum (Trematoda, Digenea) parasitizing Loricariichthys platymetopon (Loricariidae).

Complex life cycle parasites can manipulate the behavior of intermediate hosts in order to reduce their fitness and increase the chance of completing life cycle. In order to understand the effects of the trematode parasites of the genus Clinostomum on host fish Loricariichthys platymetopon, a filmed experiment was carried out to quantify the foraging activity of hosts with different intensities of infection. The results suggest that hosts with higher parasite intensities reduced foraging activity early in the morning when compared to hosts with low intensities. This period may be critical for

MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry: a new tool for rapid identification of cercariae (Trematoda, Digenea).

Identification of cercariae was long based on morphological and morphometric features, but these approaches remain difficult to implement and require skills that have now become rare. Molecular tools have become the reference even though they remain relatively time-consuming and expensive. We propose a new approach for the identification of cercariae using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Snails of different genera (Radix, Lymnaea, Stagnicola, Planorbis, and Anisus) were collected in the field to perform emitting tests in the laboratory. The cercariae they emitted (Trichobilharzia anseri, Diplosto

Three new species of Clinostomum Leidy, 1856 (Trematoda) from Middle American fish-eating birds.

We recently engaged in a two-part study of Clinostomum Leidy, 1856 across a geographic range comprising central Mexico southwards to Costa Rica, in Central America. In the first study, we investigated the species boundaries by using DNA sequences of mitochondrial and nuclear molecular markers, implementing several analytical tools and species delimitation methods. The result of that approach revealed five highly divergent genetic lineages that were interpreted as independent evolutionary units, or species. Here, we present the second part of the study, where we describe three of the five speci

Integrative taxonomy of European parasitic flatworms of the genus Metorchis Looss, 1899 (Trematoda: Opisthorchiidae).

Metorchis spp. are flukes (Platyhelminthes: Digenea) that infect vertebrates, including humans, dogs, cats, poultry and wild game, with cyprinid freshwater fish serving as typical second intermediate hosts. In their definitive hosts, the Metorchis spp. are difficult to identify to species. We provide and analyze sequences of two nuclear (18S rDNA and ITS2) and two mitochondrial (CO1 and ND1) DNA loci of four morphologically identified European species of the Metorchis, namely Metorchis albidus, Metorchis bilis, Metorchis crassiusculus and Metorchis xanthosomus, and of another opisthorchiid, Eu

Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda): differential in vivo cytokine responses in high and low compatible hosts.

In order to investigate the factors determining the expulsion of intestinal trematodes, we have analyzed the in vivo cytokine responses at several levels and the local responses against Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda) in two host species displaying different compatibility with the parasite. The response of the high compatible host (mice) is characterized by a mixed Th1/Th2 phenotype in the spleen, Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes. At the intestine, a marked Th1 response with a marked increase of IFN-γ together with elevated number of mucosal neutrophils and expression of induced nitr

[Participation of Codiella troscheli (Mollusca: Prosobranchia) in the Metorchis albidus (Trematoda; Opisthorchidae) life cycle].

Investigating Mollusca prosobranchia of the Bithyniidae family in the water reservoirs of the Novosibirsk Region in 1994-1998 first revealed that Codiella troscheli had the trematode Metorchis albidus (Braun, 1893). The species affiliation of the trematode was experimentally verified. This paper presents the results of studies of the seasonal and daily emission of M. albidus cercariae and data on their longevity in the environment, on the ability of the cercariae to live in fish and that of metacercariae in the body of a definitive host. The studies have indicated that not only the trematode O

Lobosorchis labri n. sp. (Trematoda: Cryptogonimidae): a host switch from snappers (Lutjanidae) to wrasses (Labridae).

The first cryptogonimid trematode with adults parasitic in wrasses (Labriformes: Labridae) is proposed. Lobosorchis labri n. sp. was recovered at a substantial combined prevalence (63%, 15 of 24) from the thicklipped wrasses Hemigymnus melapterus (Bloch) and H. fasciatus (Bloch) at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. Definitive hosts for all other Lobosorchis spp. are exclusively tropical snappers, Lutjanus spp. (Lutjaniformes: Lutjanidae). Novel material for Lobosorchis spp. collected from snappers is also reported, including for L. tibaldiae Miller & Cribb, 2005 and L. polygongylus Miller et a

Brachylaima succini sp. nov. (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae) from Succinea lauta, an amber snail in Hokkaido, Japan.

Through a continuous survey of trematodes in land snails of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, we have discovered four species of the genus Brachylaima (Trematode: Brachylaimidae). Among them, Brachylaima ezohelicis, Brachylaima asakawai, and Brachylaima lignieuhadrae have already been described. Each of the three species is a strict specialist in selecting a particular species of land snail as the first intermediate host. In this report, we propose the fourth species, Brachylaima succini sp. nov., based on ecological, morphological, and phylogenetic considerations. Sporocysts and met

Brachylaima lignieuhadrae n. sp. (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae) from land snails of the genus Euhadra in Japan.

Land snails of the genus Euhadra (Gastropoda: Bradybaenidae) are indigenous to the Japanese Archipelago. The larvae of an unknown species, tentatively named as Brachylaima sp. B (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae), have been found from Euhadra brandtii sapporo in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. In this study, a large-scale snail survey covering a wide area of Japan was conducted to confirm the larval parasite from members of Euhadra and related genera. Sporocysts with cercariae were found only from Eu. brandtii sapporo in Hokkaido and Euhadra callizona in central Honshu at low prevalence (
