Triatoma costalimai and Triatoma jatai are related species, which occur in sympatry in Paranã, Tocantins, Brazil, in rocky outcrops and in peridomicile and intradomicile environments. This study compared morphologic and morphometric aspects of the eggs of these species using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Operculum cells (OP) and egg body (EB) were drawn and photographed, their surfaces were measured, and spots were quantified. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA and t-tests. OM showed an egg exochorium with spots in T. costalimai and a predominance

The genus Belminus Stål, 1859 is distinguished by markedly entomophagous species. This genus is a poorly studied group of the Triatominae (Jeannel, 1919), which includes hematophagous species that are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909), the etiological agent of Chagas disease. This study reports for the first time the description of the antennal sensilla of Belminus corredori (Galvão & Angulo, 2003), Belminus herreri (Lent & Wygodzinsky, 1979), and Belminus ferroae (Sandoval, Pabón, Jurberg & Galvão, 2007) nymphs and adults throughout scanning electron microscopy and optical microscop

The kissing bugs--Triatoma rubida (Uhler), Triatoma protracta (Uhler), and Triatoma recurva (Stal)--are common hematophagous bugs in southeastern Arizona and responsible for severe allergic reactions in some individuals who are bitten. They also possess the potential to transmit the blood parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi. We previously found the essential oil, citronella, to be an excellent deterrent of feeding of T. rubida on a restrained mouse. In this work, we tested major components--alcohols, aldehydes, and monoterpenes--of citronella oil for repellency against the three common triatome specie

Mepraia spinolai is a triatomine endemic to Chile vector of Trypanosoma cruzi (the causative agent of Chagas disease) that presents a marked wing polymorphism. This study investigates morphometric changes in the heads of flightless individuals of this vector. It is known that infection by T. cruzi produces physiological, morphological, and behavioral changes, among others, in triatomine vectors. This study aims to evaluate whether T. cruzi infection modifies head morphometry in micropterous M. spinolai, and to infer the behavioral and ecological implications of such changes. Results revealed t

A recurring question concerning Trypanosoma cruzi DNA detection/quantification is related to the fact that DNA amplification, by itself, does not differentiate between viable or dead parasites. On the other hand, RNA can be considered a potential molecular marker of pathogens viability. Herein, we developed a quantitative real-time PCR with reverse Transcription (RT-qPCR) to quantify viable T. cruzi in artificially infected Rhodnius prolixus whilst evaluating differences between DNA and mRNA quantification along the insect midgut during 5, 9, 15 and 29 days after feeding. The RT-qPCR presented

Dipetalogaster maximus (Dipmax), a blood-sucking bug belonging to the family Reduviidae, has been used to obtain blood samples, for example for clinical chemistry and haematology, in a variety of zoo animals and wildlife. Using this bug allows stress-free blood sampling as the bug is able to draw blood without the mammal noticing the bug. In laboratory animal science, the need for blood samples from unstressed animals may arise, especially in animal behaviour research. The use of Dipmax bugs may prove a valuable tool for this purpose. To validate the method, we compared an array of standard bl

Epidemiological surveillance of Chagas disease with determination of Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) positivity and genotyping is important for the adoption of control measures. The association of biospectroscopy with chemometric models can be used as an alternative tool to determine T. cruzi positivity and genotyping directly on the insect, with laser incidence, without damage to the insects, and without parasite isolation and growing. In this study, infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) combined with classification and authentication models was used for the identification of the experimental infecti

BACKGROUND: The protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi circulates in semiarid areas of northeastern Brazil in distinct ecotopes (sylvatic, peridomestic and domestic) where Triatoma brasiliensis Neiva, 1911 is the most important Chagas disease vector. In this study, we analyzed microevolutionary and demographic aspects of T. brasiliensis populations at the ecotypic, micro and macro-geographic scales by combining morphometrics and molecular results. Additionally, we aimed to address the resolution of both markers for delimiting populations in distinct scales.
METHODS: We sampled populations of T. brasilie

Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834) is the main vector of the Chagas´ disease in Argentina. The presence of insects in the domestic environment after application of pyrethroid insecticides was reported. The colonization and the evolution of insecticide resistance are processes that can explain these control failures. In both processes, the active dispersal of insects is a determining factor. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the reproductive state modulate the dispersal capacity of females of T. infestans susceptible and resistant to deltamethrin. For this, different variables

The aim of this work is to present aspects related to the ecology of Rhodnius nasutus Stål, 1859 in palms from Chapada do Araripe in Ceará, Brazil. The following five species of palms were investigated: babaçu (Attalea speciosa), buriti (Mauritia flexuosa), carnaúba (Copernicia prunifera), catolé (Syagrus oleracea) and macaúba-barriguda (Acrocomia intumescens). Fifth palms were dissected (10 specimens for each species). The overall infestation index was 86%, with a total of 521 triatomines collected. The Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas, 1909 Index was 16.8% and two insects presented mixed infection w

Defensins are cysteine-rich peptides involved in the innate immunity of insects and many other organisms. In the present study, two novel defensin-encoding cDNAs and the respective genomic DNAs (def3 and def4) of Triatoma brasiliensis were identified and their tissue-specific and temporal expression was characterized. Both of the deduced mature peptides consisted of 43 amino acid residues and were highly similar to previously identified triatomine defensins (81.4-100%). Semi-quantitative RT-PCR data showed that def3 was constitutively expressed in the fat body and was induced in salivary gland

The aim of this paper was to analyse the active dispersal of Triatoma infestans and the role of chickens as passive carriers of this insect in peridomestic areas of La Rioja, Argentina. To measure active dispersal, monthly catches were made on six consecutive nights for five months (in the warm season) using light traps (for flying insects) and sticky dispersal barriers (for walking insects). The nutritional and reproductive states of adults were evaluated. Over the course of the sampling period, a total of eight flying adults, six walking nymphs and 10 walking adults of the species T. infesta

BACKGROUND: A new triatomine species was discovered in the semiarid Caatinga region of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, where it coexists with Triatoma brasiliensis in both natural and artificial habitats.
METHODS: Triatomine specimens were captured in peridomestic and sylvatic environments in Rio Grande do Norte. Their identification was based on a combination of analyses, including morphology using dichotomous keys, head and hemelytron morphometry, and phylogeny using cytochrome b and internal transcribed spacer markers.
RESULTS: The new species exhibits morphological traits that are intermedi

Most triatomine bugs inhabit nests and shelters of vertebrates, some of which are closely associated with palm trees. A few species occupy domestic and peridomestic habitats, posing a threat to human health as natural transmitters of Chagas disease. A peridomestic specimen that yielded positive results for Trypanosoma cruzi in both microscope and polymerase chain reaction tests was collected during a vector control survey in northeastern Paraguay. The specimen was identified as Rhodnius stali, marking a new record for the country. To the best of our knowledge, this is the southernmost report o

BACKGROUND: Hybridization events between Triatoma spp. have been observed under both natural and laboratory conditions. The ability to produce hybrids can influence different aspects of the parent species, and may even result in events of introgression, speciation and extinction. Hybrid sterility is caused by unviable gametes (due to errors in chromosomal pairing [meiosis]) or by gonadal dysgenesis (GD). All of the triatomine hybrids analyzed so far have not presented GD. We describe here for the first time GD events in triatomine hybrids and highlight these taxonomic and evolutionary implicat

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, affecting approximately eight million individuals in tropical regions, is primarily transmitted by vectors. Rhodnius prolixus, a triatomine vector, commonly inhabits in ecotopes with diverse palm tree species, creating optimal conditions for vector proliferation. This study aims to explore the transmission ecology of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative parasite of Chagas disease, by investigating the feeding patterns and natural infection rates of R. prolixus specimens collected from various wild palm species in the Colombian Orinoco region.

In Latin America, Chagas disease has been mostly transmitted to humans by contact with the feces or urine of triatomine species infected with the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. There are currently 156 species in the subfamily Triatominae, distributed in 18 genera and five tribes. The prolixus group of the genus Rhodnius is composed of 11 species. Rhodnius marabaensis was the last species described and considered in this grouping of vectors. Knowledge about the biology, ecology, and behavior of these vectors is of great epidemiological importance, and in order to expand the knowledge of the biolo
