Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs), particularly Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis, threaten sheep health and welfare globally, while anthelmintic resistance drives the need for sustainable alternatives. Essential oils (EOs) from Citrus species, rich in bioactive terpenes, represent a promising option, especially as locally sourced by-products. Five furocoumarin-free (FCF) Citrus EOs from Calabria (bergamot, sweet orange, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit) were chemically characterised by GC-MS. Anthelmintic activity against H. contortus and T. colubriformis was evaluated using

OBJECTIVE: To isolate Trichostrongylus vitrinus from naturally-acquired mixed trichostrongylid infections (predominantly Trichostrongylus spp. and Teladorsagia circumcincta) in sheep using differential larval development temperatures and the anatomical location of adults.
METHODS: Faeces were collected from ewes with mixed, naturally acquired trichostrongylid infection, and incubated at low temperatures (4°C or 8°C) for 20-68 days depending on temperature. Harvested infective larvae were passaged through worm-free lambs, from which the first 5 m of small intestine was collected and adult worm

The aim of the study was to compare the in vivo anthelmintic activity of sainfoin hay (Onobrychis viciifolia) and carob pod meal (Ceratonia siliqua) against gastrointestinal nematodes. Seven days before infection, 64 naive lambs were assigned to four different groups: Group S received sainfoin hay and group CAR was fed with carob pods. The remaining lambs received lucerne hay (Medicago sativa) and were assigned to positive (non-treated, NT) and negative (treated, T) control groups (treatment with albendazole). On day 0, lambs were artificially trickle infected for 6 weeks, with a mixture of in

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if an earlier infection with Oestrus ovis would down regulate an infection with Trichostrongylus colubriformis when the larvae of O. ovis were expelled from the nasal cavities of sheep by a specific treatment. Three groups of five lambs were used: group 1 was artificially infected with O. ovis larvae and later with T. colubriformis, group 2 received O. ovis larvae and later was treated with ivermectin 14 days before being infected with T. colubriformis. Group 3 was infected with T. colubriformis only. The criteria examined were: the effects on ne

Nematode-naive sheep and sheep immunised by truncated infections with Trichostrongylus colubriformis were fitted with intestinal cannulae to allow administration of challenge infection and collection of intestinal fluids. Sheep were slaughtered at various times after challenge and the distribution of larvae along the small intestine was determined. Results showed that immune sheep had significantly fewer larvae in their intestines and that some sheep could expel the challenge infection within 2 h. Mucus samples from immune sheep contained increased parasite-specific antibody, histamine and ant

Concurrent infections of sheep with Oestrus ovis and trichostrongyles of the digestive tract are common in the field. In order to examine the possible occurrence of interactions between these two parasites and the consequences on parasite biology and the associated pathophysiological changes, an experimental study was conducted on four groups of naïve sheep. Group O was infected repeatedly with O. ovis larvae from D0 to D42 of experiment; group T received a single infection of Trichostrongylus colubriformis on D49; sheep from group OT received both infections, and animals from group C remained

Phosphorus (P) is one of the main minerals present in the animal body and exerts crucial functions in the organism. P is present at all cell membranes and integrates the structure of bones, being necessary its supplementation in ruminants due to the deficiency of this mineral in the pastures. One of the principal factors that compromise its metabolization are gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Thus, the objective of this study was evaluate the performance and metabolism of P through its distribution in the animal body, density of bones and muscles, dynamic fluxes, biological availability and ha

Sheep experimentally depleted of copper (Cu) and infected with Trichostrongylus axei and Trichostrongylus colubriformis were studied for changes in white blood cell (WBC) populations, anti-parasite antibody responses and in vitro proliferative response to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Trichostrongylus spp. antigens. Increases in circulating total WBC, lymphocyte, monocyte and neutrophil leucocyte numbers had a bimodal distribution which was related to the different developmental stages of the nematode. Eosinophil leucocyte numbers were generally lower than those of un

Gastrointestinal nematodes threaten the productivity of grazing livestock and anthelmintic resistance has emerged globally. It is broadly understood that wild ruminants living in sympatry with livestock act as a positive source of refugia for anthelmintic-susceptible nematodes. However, they might also act as reservoirs of anthelmintic-resistant nematodes, contributing to the spread of anthelmintic resistance at a regional scale. Here, we sampled managed sheep and cattle together with feral goats within the same property in New South Wales, Australia. Internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) nema

Nematode populations is stabled ewes of the Rimouski region were studied by means of fecal worm egg counts, fecal culture of larvae, and worm counts at necropsy. It was found that during the winter strongyle egg counts were low, Trichostrongylus eggs being most numerous, The stronglye egg counts increased following lambing and reached peak in June. Ostertagia spp was the principal contributor to this "spring-rise", with substantial contribution from Trichostrongylus and Haemonchus contortus. The bulk of adult worm populations in winter, however, was made up of Trichostrongylus, whereas the gre

In the present world a significant threat to human health is posed by zoonotic diseases. Helminth parasites of ruminants are one of the most common zoonotic organisms on the planet. Among them, trichostrongylid nematodes of ruminants, found worldwide, parasitize humans in different parts of the world with varying rates of incidence, particularly among rural and tribal communities with poor hygiene, pastoral livelihood and poor access to health services. In the Trichostrongyloidea superfamily, Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Marshallagia marshalli, Nematodirus abnormalis and Tr

The prevalence of hookworm eggs in fecal samples, by modified cellophane thick-smear technique, was found to be 30.0% (61/203 samples) in Lahanam Village, Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The hookworm eggs were morphologically heterogeneous, so that identification was confirmed by copro-PCR with specific primers for hookworms and Trichostrongylus spp.; 12 samples were positive for Necator americanus, 19 for Ancylostoma spp., with one mixed infection of both. Sequencing of the Ancylostoma spp. copro-PCR products found A. duodenale, and also the animal hookworms, A. caninum and A. ceylanicum. More

Exsheathment is crucial in the transition from free-living to parasitic phase for most strongyle nematode species. A greater understanding of this process could help in developing new parasitic control methods. This study aimed to identify commonalities in response to exsheathment triggers (heat acclimation, CO2 and pH) in a wide range of species (Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus spp., Cooperia spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Chabertia ovina, and members of the subfamily Ostertagiinae) from sheep, cattle and farmed deer. The initial expectation of similarity in pH requirements amongst specie

Trichostrongylus spp. are primarily parasites of ruminants, but humans can become infected as accidental hosts. Information about the clinical aspects of human trichostrongyliasis is limited. This study investigated the clinical and haematological characteristics of a large number of trichostrongyliasis patients. In the Fouman district of Guilan Province in northern Iran, during 2015-2016, 60 patients were identified as positive for Trichostrongylus spp., using stool examination methods. The clinical manifestations and demographic data of all patients were recorded and further analysed. Twenty

Forty-eight tracer lambs were killed in 2004-2007. The abomasum, duodenum, small intestine (jejunum and ileum), colon and caecum were collected and processed for parasites enumeration and identification-mucosal scrapings of both abomasums and intestines were digested. Out of 48 gastrointestinal tracts examined, all were found to be positive for nematode infection. Seventeen species of gastrointestinal nematodes were recovered: Bunostomum trigonocephalum, Cooperia curticei, Haemonchus contortus, Chabertia ovina, Nematodirus battus, Nematodirus filicollis, Oesophagostomum venulosum, Teladorsagia
