Superficial hemosiderosis (SH) of the CNS is a rare disease caused by repeated subarachnoid hemorrhage, with progressive superficial siderosis of the CNS. We report a patient with SH whose clinical picture was marked by progressive gait ataxia, hearing loss, dysarthria, and recurrent episodes of hemifacial spasm. Iron and ferritin levels in the CSF were significantly higher than in a control group of patients. Six month's treatment with the iron-chelating agent trientine dihydrochloride led to clinical improvement, with a concomitant reduction of CSF iron level. We suggest that, in addition to

Progressive hepatolenticular degeneration, or Wilson's disease, is a genetic disorder of copper metabolism. Knowledge of the clinical presentations and treatment of the disease are important both to the generalist and to specialists in gastroenterology and hepatology, neurology, psychiatry, and paediatrics. Wilson's disease invariably results in severe disability and death if untreated. The diagnosis is easily overlooked but if discovered early, effective treatments are available that will prevent or reverse many manifestations of this disorder. Studies have identified the role of copper in di

Authors review the pathogenesis, symptoms and diagnosis of Wilson's disease. Wilson's disease or hepatolenticular degeneration is an autosomal recessive disorder. It is caused by defective hepatic excretion of copper. The disease is fatal without treatment. The prevention of severe permanent damage depends upon early recognition and diagnosis followed by appropriate lifelong anticopper treatment. The purpose of the therapy of Wilson's disease is to eliminate the copper by chelators (D-penicillamine, triethylene tetramine, ammonium tetrathiomolibdate) and to inhibit the absorption and accumulat

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There are limited data on the adverse events of D-penicillamine in Wilson's disease (WD) that can result in dose modification or treatment discontinuation. The objective of this study was to observe the adverse events related to D-penicillamine in patients with hepatic WD.
METHODS: A retrospective audit of prospectively registered hepatic WD patients at a tertiary care center between December 2006 and January 2020 was carried out. Demographic variables, laboratory parameters, and details of treatment were noted. Adverse events (AEs) related to D-penicilla

Wilson's disease (WD) is an uncommon hereditary disorder caused by a deficiency in the ATP7B transporter. The protein codified by this gene facilitates the incorporation of the copper into ceruloplasmin. Therefore, WD accumulates copper primary in the liver and secondary in other organs, such as the central nervous system. It represents a wide spectrum of disease, ranging from being asymptomatic in some patients to promote an acute liver failure in others. The diagnosis requires a combination of clinical signs and symptoms, as well as some diagnostic tests such as the measurement of serum ceru

Wilson disease is a rare disorder of copper metabolism that results in accumulation of copper in the liver and subsequently in other organs, mainly the central nervous system and the kidneys. Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of Wilson disease are discussed, with the emphasis that this is a disease of children, adolescents, and young adults. The myriad manifestations of Wilson disease make its diagnosis dependent on a high index of suspicion, and determination of its genetic background is helping to elucidate the genotype-phenotype correlation and the diversity of presentations. Wilson's disease is an autosomal recessively inherited copper overload disorder that leads to hepatic and/or neurologic symptoms. More than a century after the first description of Wilson's disease, the available medical treatment options have not been standardized. The efficacy of the commonly used drugs is satisfactory for hepatic disease, but disappointing in the neurologic patients, including the risk of neurologic deterioration after the initiation of chelation therapy. An approach to overcome this problem is the careful and systematic assessment of biochemical response patterns and the q

A 9-year-old Bedlington Terrier was evaluated because of weight loss, inappetence, and hematemesis. Copper storage disease had been diagnosed previously on the basis of high hepatic copper concentration. Treatment had included dietary copper restriction and administration of trientine for chelation of copper. A CBC revealed microcytic hypochromic anemia. High serum activities of liver enzymes, high bile acid concentrations, and low BUN and albumin concentrations were detected. Vomiting resolved temporarily with treatment, but the clinicopathologic abnormalities persisted. Results of transcolon

The WEEL for triethylenetetramine (TETA; CAS No. 112-24-3) was originally established in 1991 and updated in 1998 and 2009. Recent literature searches to identify new toxicity information were performed in 2016 and January 2021. No new studies or data relevant to the WEEL were identified. TETA is used in manufacturing; the hydrochloride salt of TETA is used as a copper-chelating drug in the treatment of Wilson's disease. TETA is severely irritating to the skin and eyes and produces skin sensitization; however, it is of low to moderate acute toxicity via the oral and dermal routes of exposure.

In this manuscript, we have studied the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution by using triethylenetetramine functionalized cellulose acetate grafted with the copolymer-manganese dioxide composite. The novel sorbent cellulose was extracted from the mangrove trees (Avicennia marina) and it was then acetylated and grafted with acrylamide. The sorbent composite was designed to interact simultaneously with higher metal loading by complexation-adsorption process. FT-IR, SEM, EDAX and TGA techniques were employed to characterize the cellulose modified composite. Sorption equilibria

Wilson's disease can manifest with symptoms of liver disease or neuropsychiatric disorders in children and adults. This autosomal recessive disorder is caused by a copper metabolism disorder due to a mutation in the ATP7B transporter. Excessive amounts of copper accumulate in the body due to inhibition of the release of copper into bile. Because effective treatment is available, recognizing this disease in presymptomatic or early stages, when it can be reversed, is highly important. Diagnosis is often easy but the available tests (measurement of ceruloplasmin, and blood, urinary and liver copp

Wilson's disease is an hereditary recessive autosomal disorder which affects around five people per million inhabitants. The primary defect is localized in the liver and the disease is manifested by the accumulation of copper in tissues. The diminution of ceruloplasmin, which until a few years ago was mistakenly thought to be the pathogenetic cause of Wilson's disease, is an epiphenomenon of the underlying metabolic defect characterized by defective copper biliary excretion. There are four stages in the natural history of the disease: 1) an asymptomatic stage of hepatic copper accumulation; 2)

Wilson's disease is an autosomal, recessive-inherited disorder of impaired biliary copper excretion that results in the accumulation of copper in various organs including the liver, the cornea and the brain. The Wilson's disease gene on chromosome 13 codes for a copper transporting P-type ATPase-ATP7B. More than 60 mutations of this gene have been described. The diagnosis of Wilson's disease is based on clinical findings and laboratory abnormalities and can be made if two of the following symptoms are present: Kayser-Fleischer rings; topical neurologic symptoms; and low serum ceruloplasmin lev

Climate change caused by the greenhouse gases CO2 remains a topic of global concern. To mitigate the excessive levels of anthrophonic CO2 in the atmosphere, CO2 capture methods have been developed and among these, adsorption is an especially promising method. This paper presents a series of amine functionalized biochar obtained from desiccated coconut waste (amine-biochar@DCW) for use as CO2 adsorbent. They are ethylenediamine-functionalized biochar@DCW (EDA-biochar@DCW), diethylenetriamine-functionalized biochar@DCW (DETA-biochar@DCW), triethylenetetramine-functionalized biochar@DCW (TETA-bio

The Emory mouse develops a late-onset hereditary cataract bearing some resemblances to human senile cataract. It was used as a model system for testing the effects of several drugs expected to have anticataractogenic potential. A low level of added dietary alpha-tocopherol had only a marginal effect. Penicillamine increased lens soluble protein, a good index of lens viability. Triethylenetetramine was too toxic to permit satisfactory treatment. Mercaptopropionylglycine produced several positive effects including a retardation of cataract at 6 months of age; parameters which increased under dru

BACKGROUND: Wilson disease is an autosomal recessive condition manifested when abnormal copper accumulation in the body particularly involving many organs such as brain, liver, and cornea. Diagnosis is challenging with the completion of tests in blood and urine, a liver biopsy, and clinical evaluation. ATP7B mutations with more than 600 identified variants are the genetic disorders of Wilson disease.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report an adolescent case with no family history presented with extrapyramidal dyskinesia. Other symptoms include liver cirrhosis and Kayser-Fleischer ring. The typical prese

INTRODUCTION: In this article, the prevalence of the Morbus Wilson disease in Germany is determined. This is based on nationwide data of drug prescriptions and contractional data of outpatient offices. The prevalence is set in ratio to the found prevalence of prescriptions in Germany.
METHOD: The descriptive evaluation is based on the database of the Central Research Institute of Ambulatory Health Care (Zi) in Germany. Additionally, data of the Federal Office of Statistics regarding inpatient treatment are available.
RESULTS: It can be seen that there is a notable difference between the prev

Continuation of treatment is recommended for pregnant women with Wilson disease. Therapy options include the copper chelating agents d-penicillamine and trientine. However, there are still uncertainties concerning a possible teratogenic risk. In this case series, we report on the outcome of 20 pregnancies with maternal chelator exposure at least during the first trimester. Of these 20 pregnancies documented by the German Embryotox Project, 14 were prospectively ascertained and 6 were retrospective. No major birth defects were observed. Three of the 14 prospective cases resulted in a spontaneou

Wilson's disease (WD) is characterised by a deleterious accumulation of copper in the liver and brain. It is one of those rare genetic disorders that benefits from effective and lifelong treatments that have dramatically transformed the prognosis of the disease. In Europe, its clinical prevalence is estimated at between 1.2 and 2/100,000 but the genetic prevalence is higher, at around 1/7000. Incomplete penetrance of the gene or the presence of modifier genes may account for the difference between the calculated genetic prevalence and the number of patients diagnosed with WD. The clinical spec
