Red clover Trifolium pratense L. phytoestrogens: UV-B radiation increases isoflavone yield, and postharvest drying methods change the glucoside conjugate profiles.

Isoflavone extracts of red clover Trifolium pratense L. (cv. Pawera) with dissimilar glucoside conjugate profiles were obtained by employing different postharvest drying methods. The most prominent isoflavones found were formononetin and biochanin A and their corresponding glucosides and malonyl glucoside esters. Postharvest freeze drying inhibited the conversion of the glycosides to the aglycones, while vacuum drying allowed for maximum conversion of the glycosides to their corresponding aglycones. Air drying produced a low level of the aglycones formononetin and biochanin A, and oven drying

Effects of exogenous taurine on growth, photosynthesis, oxidative stress, antioxidant enzymes and nutrient accumulation by Trifolium alexandrinum plants under manganese stress.

Plants essentially require manganese (Mn) for their normal metabolic functioning. However, excess Mn in the cellular environment is detrimental to plant growth, development, and physio-biochemical functions. Taurine (TAU) is an amino acid with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in animals and humans. However, no previous study has investigated the potential of TAU in plant metal stress tolerance. The current study provides some novel insights into the effect of TAU in modulating the defense system of Trifolium alexandrinum plants under Mn toxicity. Manganese toxicity resulted

Application of Aspergillus niger-treated agrowaste residue and Glomus mosseae for improving growth and nutrition of Trifolium repens in a Cd-contaminated soil.

The microbial transformation of sugar beet (SB) agrowaste with or without rock-phosphate (RP) has utility for the improvement of plant growth in a Cd (5 microg g-1) artificially contaminated soil, particularly when the soil is co-inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Glomus mosseae isolated from a Cd-polluted area. Under such Cd-polluted conditions, the limited growth, mineral nutrition, symbiotic developments (nodulation and AM-colonization) and soil enzymatic activities were stimulated using SB or SB+RP as soil amendments and G. mosseae as inoculant. G. mosseae enhanced plant es

Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) Isoflavones Reduce Plasma Levels of Extracellular DNA and Histone Proteins in Rats with Experimental Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Endogenous immunotropic factors that promote the development of non-infectious inflammation can act as pathogenetic targets in the development of new agents for the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Nucleotide motifs circulating in the blood can activate the immune system, thus playing an important role in the pathogenesis of T2DM and its vascular complications. We studied the effect of isoflavones extracted from red clover flowers (Trifolium pratense) on the plasma levels of extracellular nucleic acids and histone proteins in rats with a model of T2DM. It was shown

Air quality biomonitoring: assessment of air pollution genotoxicity in the Province of Novara (North Italy) by using Trifolium repens L. and molecular markers.

Mixed air pollutants are considered a major cause of DNA damage in living species. In this study Trifolium repens L. cv Regal was used as a bioindicator to assess the genotoxicity of air stressors in the Italian province of Novara. Two on-site biomonitoring experiments were performed during the spring and autumn of 2004. Test plants were exposed at 19 monitoring sites distributed homogeneously throughout the province, and each experiment lasted for a period of 6 weeks. Genotoxicity was evaluated with Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) molecular markers. The results show the predomin

The Physiological Mechanism of Exogenous Melatonin on Improving Seed Germination and the Seedling Growth of Red Clover (Trifolium pretense L.) under Salt Stress.

Salt stress can affect various physiological processes in plants, ultimately hindering their growth and development. Melatonin (MT) can effectively resist multiple abiotic stresses, improving plant stress resistance. To analyze the mechanism of exogenous MT to enhance salt tolerance in red clover, we conducted a comprehensive study to examine the influence of exogenous MT on various parameters, including seed germination indices, seedling morphological traits, and physiological and photosynthetic indicators, using four distinct red clover varieties (H1, H2, H3, and H4). This investigation was

Development and deployment of a public mid-density genotyping panel for crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) based on whole-genome re-sequencing of diverse germplasm.

Crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) is an obligately outcrossing, cool-season annual legume valued for forage and cover cropping, yet genomic resources to support systematic improvement are limited. We performed the first whole-genome re-sequencing of global crimson clover germplasm to (i) develop a public mid-density enrichment capture panel for breeding applications and (ii) characterized genetic diversity among the sampled genotypes to validate the representativeness of the germplasm for panel design. From 45 crimson clover accessions, we sequenced 194 genotypes: 45 at ∼50X, generating

Comparative residual effect of activated carbon and other organic amendments on immobilization and phytoavailability nickel and other metals to Egyptian Clover (Trifolium alexandrinum) in contaminated soil.

The effect of organic amendments on phytoavailability of nickel (Ni) and other metals in soil may change with time due to transformation of organic matter. We investigated the residual effect of organic amendments (farm manure [FM], poultry manure [PM], pressmud [PrM], and activated carbon [AC]) to immobilize Ni and other metals in soil and absorption of metals by Egyptian clover. Fresh and dry weights of Egyptian clover increased significantly (p < 0.05) due to residual effect of amendments compared to control. Extractable Ni and other metals had significant positive correlation with residual

Screening and isolation of cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors from Trifolium pratense L. via ultrafiltration, enzyme-immobilized magnetic beads, semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography and high-speed counter-current chromatography.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs reportedly reduce the risk of developing cancer. One mechanism by which they reduce carcinogenesis involves the inhibition of the activity of cyclooxygenase-2, an enzyme that is overexpressed in various cancer tissues. Its overexpression increases cell proliferation and inhibits apoptosis. However, selected cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors can also act through cyclooxygenase-independent mechanisms. In this study, using ultrafiltration, enzyme-immobilized magnetic beads, high-performance liquid chromatography, and electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry, severa

Allelopathic effect of the methanol extract of the weed species-red sorrel (Rumex acetosella L.) on the growth, phytohormone content and antioxidant activity of the cover crop - white clover (Trifolium repens L.).

Allelopathy is a biological process in which one organism releases biochemicals that affect the growth and development of other organisms. The current investigation sought to determine the allelopathic effect of Rumex acetosella on white clover (Trifolium repens) growth and development by using its shoot extract (lower IC50 value) as a foliar treatment. Here, different concentrations (25, 50, 100, and 200 g/L) of shoot extract from Rumex acetosella were used as treatments. With increasing concentrations of shoot extract, the plant growth parameters, chlorophyll and total protein content of Tri

Egyptian clover exhibits favorable physicochemical and nutritional characteristics for valorization as a sustainable forage ingredient in poultry diets.

In the poultry industry, feed is generally based on maize and soybeans but given the unavailability and high price of these raw materials, breeders are always looking for alternatives. The concept of alternative sources, which is part of the requirements of sustainable agriculture, represents a real environmental and economic opportunity. Then the purpose of the current work is to determine the nutritional quality of a forage plant, (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) which will be used as an ingredient in the formulation of a feed for broiler chickens. Samples of Trifolium alexandrinum L. were collec

Influence of Soil and Nonsoil Environments on Nodulation by Rhizobium trifolii.

Indigenous serotypes 1-01 and 2-02 of Rhizobium trifolii occupied similar percentages (18 to 23%) of root nodules on soil-grown subclover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) and were virtually absent (4.5%) from nodules of soil-grown white clover (Trifolium repens L.). In contrast (with the exception of one dilution [10]), serotype 1-01 occupied a substantial portion of nodules (16 to 40%) on white clover seedlings grown on mineral salts agar and exposed to samples of the same soil in the form of a 10-fold dilution series (10 to 10). Under the latter conditions, occupancy of subclover nodules by 1-01
