Neurotoxic effects of dichloroacetylene.

In inhalation tests involving lethal as well as sublethal doses of dias examined in rabbits by means ofhistologic and neurofunctional methods. Histologic examination revealed chromatolysis, disintegration of Nissl bodies, and cell shrinkage in proportion to the doses employed in the nuclei of the unpaired brain stem, in the sensory cortical regions and especially in the sensory cranial nerve nuclei. The sensory trigeminal nucleus was involved most severely, followed in decreasing intensity 0y the facial and oculomotor nerves and the motor trigeminal nucleus; the least changes were observed in

Vestibulotrigeminal pathways in the frog, Rana esculenta.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether primary vestibular afferent fibers establish direct connections with the motor and sensory trigeminal system in the brainstem of the frog. The experiments were carried out on Rana esculenta. In anaesthetized animals the trigeminal and vestibular nerves were prepared, and their proximal stumps were labeled either with fluorescein binding dextran amine (trigeminal nerve) or tetramethylrhodamine dextran amine (vestibulocochlear nerve). With a confocal laser scanning microscope we could detect close connections between the vestibular fibers and bran

[Progressive spinal muscular atrophy of proximal location in adults].

The authors report two cases of familial progressive muscular atrophy of proximal localization, with late onset of signs which was associated with involvement of the motor nucleus of trigeminal nerve and hypoglossus nerve nucleus as well as with presence of gynaecomastia. Cases of coexistence of gynaecomastia with spinal muscular atrophy are rare in the literature and the present report may serve for explanation whether the association of these signs is accidental or whether it is a separate nosological entity.

A novel phenotype for the dynein heavy chain mutation Loa: altered dendritic morphology, organelle density, and reduced numbers of trigeminal motoneurons.

Dynein, the retrograde motor protein, is essential for the transport of cargo along axons and proximal dendrites in neurons. The dynein heavy chain mutation Loa has been reported to cause degeneration of spinal motor neurons, as well as defects of spinal sensory proprioceptive neurons, but cranial nerve nuclei have received little attention. Here, we examined the number and morphology of neurons in cranial nerve nuclei of young, adult, and aged heterozygous Loa mice, with a focus on the trigeminal, facial, and trochlear motor nuclei, as well as the proprioceptive mesencephalic trigeminal nucle

The motor nuclei and primary projections of the IXth, Xth, XIth and XIIth cranial nerves in the monitor lizard, Varanus exanthematicus.

The motor nuclei and sensory connections of the IXth, Xth, XIth, and XIIth cranial nerves of the reptile Varanus exanthematicus were studied with the methods of anterograde degeneration and anterograde and retrograde axonal transport. The motor nuclei of nerve IX are located ventrally in the rhombencephalon and are constituted medially by the large-celled glossopharyngeal part of the nucleus ambiguus and laterally by the small-celled nucleus salivatorius inferior. The motor nuclei of nerve X consist of the dorsomedially located dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and the laterally located vagal

Distribution of the galectin-1 mRNA in the rat nervous system: its transient upregulation in rat facial motor neurons after facial nerve axotomy.

Galectin-1 is a member of the animal lectin family that displays conserved consensus sequences and similar carbohydrate binding specificities. Recent analyses revealed that galectin-1 plays an important role in the process of nerve regeneration. We analyzed the topological expression of galectin-1 mRNA in adult rat nervous system. Galectin-1 mRNA was predominantly observed in the cell bodies of neurons such as oculomotor nucleus (III), trochlear nucleus (IV), trigeminal motor nucleus (V), abducens nucleus (VI), facial nucleus (VII), hypoglossal nucleus (XII), red nucleus, and locus ceruleus. [Pure trigeminal motor neuropathy presenting with temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction in a patient with HIV and HCV infections].

Pure trigeminal motor neuropathy (PTMN) is a rarely described condition. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV1) and hepatitis C virus who presented with weakness of left temporalis and masseter muscles and painful left temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) a few months after cerebral toxoplasmosis revealing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Magnetic resonance imaging revealed severe wasting and fat replacement of the left temporalis, pterygoid and masseter muscles and showed neither abnormalities in the left motor nucleus of

[The distribution of NADPH-diaphorase and neuronal no synthase in rat medulla oblongata nuclei].

The distribution of nitroxide ergic neurons in the medulla oblongata nuclei in Wistar rats (n = 8) was studied histochemically (NADPH-diaphorase) and using immunohistochemistry with an antiserum against neuronal form of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). NADPH-diaphorase activity was found in large and small neurons of the sensory, autonomic and motor nuclei. The latter were especially rich in the cells demonstrating the activity of the enzyme. Unlike NADPH-diaphorase, nNOS in the corresponding nuclei was always detected in the fewer number of neurons, predominantly of small sizes. The sensory nucl

Percutaneous Computed Tomography-Guided Radiofrequency Ablation of Spinal Trigeminal Tract and Nucleus Caudalis for Refractory Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

This is a surgical video of a computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of the spinal trigeminal tract and nucleus caudalis for refractory trigeminal neuropathic pain.1,2 Many have contributed historically, among them, Sjoqvist3 in 1938 first described destruction of the descending medullary trigeminal tractus via open craniotomy.3-6 In 1967 and 1968, Crue7 and Hitchcock8 independently developed a percutaneous tractotomy technique. Although Kanpolat9,10 first described the use of CT imaging for percutaneous creation of a single tractotomy/nucleotomy lesion resulting

Afferent limb of the human jaw reflex: electrophysiologic and anatomic study.

Jaw reflexes were recorded before and after neurosurgery of the trigeminal sensory root or the gasserian ganglion in 11 patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia and in 2 patients with orbital malignancies. The reflex was also studied in three patients with unilateral midbrain lesions verified by postmortem findings. Jaw reflex abnormalities appeared in all cases, although there were no clinical or EMG signs of masseter dysfunction. Proprioceptive afferent fibers of the jaw reflex therefore seem to be mediated by the sensory and not the motor root. The afferent limb of the jaw reflex seems

Feeding, Emotion, and the Brain Stem: The Interesting Case of the Mesencephalic Trigeminal Nucleus.

BACKGROUND: Our growing understanding of the brain basis of mind has seen an interest in evolutionarily ancient structures, most notably the brainstem. This paper offers an interesting example of this underexplored territory, by considering the mesencephalic component of the trigeminal nucleus. This largely uncelebrated brainstem structure is central to control of the jaw, and for the foundational acts of eating, oral exploration, and biting. OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the interesting anatomy of the mesencephalic trigeminal: unique in the nervous system as a centrally located sensory gan

Localization of oxytocin binding sites in the human brainstem and upper spinal cord: an autoradiographic study.

Two different ligands, tritiated oxytocin and a newly synthesized and monoiodinated oxytocin antagonist, were used to reveal sites which bind oxytocin in the brainstem and upper spinal cord of 12 human subjects. Tissue sections were incubated with either ligand at a concentration close to their respective dissociation constants determined in human uterus and rat brain. Specificity of binding was assessed in presence of unlabelled oxytocin in excess. Comparable results were obtained using tritiated or iodinated ligand. Labelling was most intense in the substantia nigra pars compacta, the substa

The accessory motor nuclei of the trigeminal, facial, and abducens nerves in the rat.

The cobalt labeling technique was applied to the trigeminal, facial, and abducens roots in order to investigate the location and morphology of motoneurons of the main and accessory motor nuclei of these cranial nerves in the rat. On the basis of soma-dendritic morphology, axonal trajectory, and tegmental location, three different accessory nuclei were distinguished in the brainstem. Neurons of the accessory nuclei of V and VII form a common club-shaped nucleus extending between the main motor nuclei of V and VII. The dendritic tree of these neurons is oriented in the dorsoventral direction and

Location of motoneurons innervating soft palate, pharynx and upper esophagus. Anatomical evidence for a possible swallowing center in the pontine reticular formation. An HRP and autoradiographical tracing study.

Retrograde HRP studies indicated that motoneurons innervating soft palate and pharynx are located in especially the dorsal group of the nucleus ambiguus, while motoneurons innervating upper esophagus and cricothyroid muscles are located in the retrofacial nucleus, the most rostral part of the nucleus ambiguus. Autoradiographic tracing techniques revealed that in the caudal pontine tegmentum an area is located just dorsal to the superior olivary complex, that projects contralaterally to the ventral part of the trigeminal motor nucleus, the dorsal group of the nucleus ambiguus and the ventral pa

Morphometric comparison of the motor trigeminal neurons.

Comparative morphological and morphometric studies of the motor trigeminal nucleus (MTN) were carried out on the brains of an alligator, a human being and a rat for the first time. Differences in neurons regarding sizes, areas, numbers, column volumes, neuropil indices and circulatory ratios were found. The results showed that the positions and shapes of the MTN were different, and the shapes of motor neurons were different, too. The average area of motor trigeminal neurons was the largest in the alligator, compared with the area in the human being, and the rat; the number of neurons and the c

The origin of nausea in migraine-a PET study.

BACKGROUND: Nausea is a common and disabling symptom of migraine. The origin of nausea is not well understood although functional connections between trigeminal neurons and the nucleus tractus solitarius may explain occurrence of nausea with pain. However, nausea occurs as a premonitory symptom in about a quarter of patients, suggesting that a primary brain alteration unrelated to the experience of pain may be the reason for nausea. METHODS: We performed positron emission tomography scans with H215O PET in premonitory phase of nitroglycerin-induced migraine and compared patients with and with

Facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN syndrome): a novel syndrome in neurology.

A 'syringomyelia-like' syndrome has been infrequently reported in neurological disorders such as Tangiers disease and lepromatous leprosy. This study reports a novel 'syringomyelia-like' syndrome in four adult male patients, which we have termed facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy, or FOSMN syndrome, that appears to have a neurodegenerative aetiology. Clinical, neurophysiological and pathological data of four patients were reviewed, including the autopsy in one patient. Four male patients (mean age at onset 43), initially developed paraesthesiae and numbness in a trigeminal nerve distr

The connections of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the brain of the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) as revealed by anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

The connections of the rostral and caudal parts of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the carp were studied with the horseradish peroxidase technique. Following ionophoretic peroxidase injections in these motor nuclei, retrogradely labeled cells were observed together with anterogradely labeled motor cell processes. Several cellular areas in thalamus, cerebellum and medulla oblongata were shown to project to the V and VII motor nuclei. Labeled cells were found in the inferior lobe and the glomerular complex of the thalamus. In the medulla oblongata, cells in the descending trigeminal nu

Do palisade endings in extraocular muscles arise from neurons in the motor nuclei?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to localize the cell bodies of palisade endings that are associated with the myotendinous junctions of the extraocular muscles. METHODS: Rhesus monkeys received tract-tracer injections (tetramethylrhodamine dextran [TMR-DA] or choleratoxin subunit B [CTB]) into the oculomotor and trochlear nuclei, which contain the motoneurons of extraocular muscles. All extraocular muscles were processed for the combined immunocytochemical detection of the tracer and SNAP-25 or synaptophysin for the visualization of the complete muscle innervation. RESULTS: In all musc

Case of isolated sensory trigeminal neuropathy in a dog.

A two-year-old rough collie bitch with a five-week history of excess salivation, coughing and dysphagia was examined. The dog had bilateral sensory loss over the whole trigeminal field while motor function of the fifth cranial nerve was preserved. No other neurological abnormalities were detected. The dog was observed over 18 months during which the condition did not progress. It was destroyed 18 months after the onset of trigeminal signs following development of a systemic illness, refractory to treatment and unrelated to the neurological signs. Pathological abnormalities were limited to the
