Heart failure temporally associated with tropicamide and phenylephrine eye drops in a premature infant: A case report and literature review.

This case report describes a rare instance of heart failure temporally associated with the administration of mydriatic eye drops during routine retinopathy of prematurity screening. A 36-week-old preterm infant developed acute tachypnea, tachycardia, and hepatomegaly shortly after receiving 0.5% tropicamide and 0.5% phenylephrine, and was subsequently diagnosed with heart failure, which responded well to intravenous deslanoside. Cardiac imaging later revealed multiple congenital anomalies, including an atrial septal defect, persistent left superior vena cava, and horseshoe lung, among others.

Comparison study between pilocarpine and tropicamide drops on corneal topography and their effect on IL-6 and TNF-α levels in tear.

Corneal stability is essential for contact lenses and refractive surgery. It seems that paralyzing eye drops or expansion of the ciliary muscle affect the radius of curvature and the strength of the cornea, and this effect is to increase the strength of the cornea during muscle spasm and decrease it in the relaxed state of the muscle. On the other hand, different factors (such as contact lens wear, ocular surface disorders, trauma, dry eye, and immunosuppression) could alter the immune defense mechanisms of the outer eye and permit microorganisms to invade the cornea. Therefore, the present st

Comparison of microdrop administration using a bottle adapter of 2.5% phenylephrine and 0.8% tropicamide with standard drop for ROP examination: a randomized controlled noninferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacologic mydriasis is essential for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening; however, conventional ophthalmic drops substantially exceed neonatal conjunctival sac volume, leading to systemic absorption and potential adverse effects. Microdrop administration may reduce drug exposure while preserving adequate pupillary dilation. This study aimed to determine whether microdrop administration of phenylephrine and tropicamide is noninferior to standard drops in achieving adequate mydriasis for ROP screening via a bottle adapter. METHODS: This single-center, randomized, parallel

A mydriatic eye-drop combination without systemic effects for premature infants: a prospective double-blind study.

Eye drops used for diagnostic mydriasis may produce systemic side effects in preterm infants. Studies on the pupil dilating and systemic effect of various mydriatic agents yielded conflicting results. We conducted a prospective randomized double-blind study on the systemic effect of two mydriatic eye-drop combinations. Thirty-nine preterm infants were randomly assigned to two groups. An eye-drop combination of 2.5% phenylephrine and 0.5% tropicamide (group D) was compared with the combination of 0.5% cyclopentolate and 0.5% tropicamide (group F). Either eye-drop combination was followed by 0.5

The effect of nasolacrimal occlusion on drug-induced mydriasis.

BACKGROUND: Nasolacrimal occlusion has been shown to improve the efficacy of some topically applied ocular drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nasolacrimal occlusion on tropicamide-induced mydriasis. METHODS: We compared pupillary dilatation by 0.125% tropicamide with and without nasolacrimal occlusion in 40 healthy volunteers. RESULTS: Analysis of variance with repeated measures failed to show any advantage due to nasolacrimal occlusion in drug-induced mydriasis. CONCLUSION: Nasolacrimal occlusion did not increase the mydriasis obtained with 0.125% tropicamide.
