The living environment and children's fears following the Indonesian tsunami.

The tsunami that struck South-east Asia on 26 December 2004 left more than 500,000 people in Aceh, Indonesia, homeless and displaced to temporary barracks and other communities. This study examines the associations between prolonged habitation in barracks and the nature of fears reported by school-age children and adolescents. In mid-2007, 30 months after the tsunami, the authors interviewed 155 child and parent dyads. Logistic regression analysis was used to compare the fears reported by children and adolescents living in barracks with those reported by their peers who were living in villages

Malaria in Sri Lanka: one year post-tsunami.

One year ago, the authors of this article reported in this journal on the malaria situation in Sri Lanka prior to the tsunami that hit on 26 December 2004, and estimated the likelihood of a post-tsunami malaria outbreak to be low. Malaria incidence has decreased in 2005 as compared to 2004 in most districts, including the ones that were hit hardest by the tsunami. The malaria incidence (aggregated for the whole country) in 2005 followed the downward trend that started in 2000. However, surveillance was somewhat affected by the tsunami in some coastal areas and the actual incidence in these are

The Asian Tsunami: PAHO disaster guidelines in action in India.

INTRODUCTION: On 26 December 2004, an earthquake (9.0 Richter, 10 kilometers below the sea) near Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered a tsunami, which traveled at approximately 800 km per hour to strike the Indian coastline. The disaster response at a 100-bed hospital situated on the beach front (2,028 km from the epicenter) is described. This paper underlines the benefit of the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for Natural Disasters in the Indian setting. METHODS: The demand on the healthcare system in the affected study area (50 km2, 40,000 populati

Cutaneous melioidosis in a Swedish tourist after the tsunami in 2004.

A tourist from Sweden developed cutaneous melioidosis after the tsunami in Thailand on 26 December 2004. Melioidosis is a severe, chronic infection which is endemic in Thailand and is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. Persons with traumatic injuries inflicted by the tsunami have increased risks of being infected by B. pseudomallei and melioidosis should be suspected if abscesses of the skin or inner organs develop in the months or years after the trauma.

The uropathologist of the future: getting ready with intelligence for the prostate cancer tsunami.

According to the recently published paper by the Lancet Commission on prostate cancer (PCa) 1, the projections of new cases of PCa will rise from 1.4 million in 2020 to 2.9 million by 2040. Such a rise cannot be prevented by public health interventions and lifestyle changes. Late diagnosis of PCa is "widespread worldwide but especially in low-income and middle-income countries" 1. The best way to cope with the harm due to the increase in case numbers is to develop systems for earlier diagnosis. Early diagnosis systems will have to integrate the growing power of artificial intelligence (AI), in

The 2004 tsunami in Penang, Malaysia: early mental health intervention.

Disasters, natural or man-made, bring numerous health care challenges. In any crisis, mental health programs are a requirement during both the acute and postemergency phases. In the Asian tsunami on December 26, 2004, some of the northwestern coastal areas of Malaysia, particularly the island of Penang, were affected with devastating effects on the residents. Such disasters can predispose to mental health problems among the affected people. An early mental health intervention program was carried out in Balik Pulau, Penang, an area badly affected by the tsunami. The objective of the interventio

The immediate lived experience of the 2004 tsunami disaster by Swedish tourists.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study of the immediate lived experiences of victims and relatives of the 2004 tsunami disaster. BACKGROUND: Disasters serve to remind us of our frailty and vulnerability and raise existential questions. From the perspective of caring sciences, suffering is regarded as a natural source for change in patients' understanding of the world and the meaningfulness of their lives. METHOD: A phenomenological hermeneutic study was conducted, using in-depth interviews with a convenience sample of 19 informants in 2006-2007. Ricoeur's theory of interpretation served as a

Stressful but rewarding: Norwegian personnel mobilised for the 2004 tsunami disaster.

Adequate responses to disasters and emergency situations rely, among other factors, on coping abilities in disaster workers and emergency personnel. In this study, different aspects of disaster-related stressors and training/experience were investigated in Norwegian personnel (n = 581) mobilised for the 2004 tsunami disaster. The level of stress reactions, measured nine to ten months after the tsunami, was relatively low in this sample, indicating that the personnel coped well with the challenges of the disaster. The level of intrusive memories was higher in disaster-area personnel (n = 335) t

Wastewater treatment in tsunami affected areas of Thailand by constructed wetlands.

The tsunami of December 2004 destroyed infrastructure in many coastal areas in South-East Asia. In January 2005, the Danish Government gave a tsunami relief grant to Thailand to re-establish the wastewater management services in some of the areas affected by the tsunami. This paper describes the systems which have been built at three locations: (a) Baan Pru Teau: A newly-built township for tsunami victims which was constructed with the contribution of the Thai Red Cross. Conventional septic tanks were installed for the treatment of blackwater from each household and its effluent and grey water

Muscoid fly populations in tsunami-devastated villages of southern India.

Several coastal villages of southern India were affected by the 26 December 2004 tsunami, and 10,749 people were killed. Investigation carried out in the affected villages during fourth, fifth, and sixth weeks posttsunami showed that the fly density was in the range of 12-91.8 flies per sweep net. In total, 3,259 flies belonging to eight species, namely, Musca domestica L., Musca vicina Macquart, Musca sorbens Wiedemann, Calliphora erythrocephala Robineau-Desvody, Sarcophaga ruficornis F., Chrysomyia sp. Robineau-Desvody, Chlorops sp., and Fannia sp. Robineau-Desvody, were recorded. M. domesti

Forensic odontologists successfully identify tsunami victims in Phuket, Thailand.

More than a year has elapsed since the seaquake in South-East Asia in December 2004, and more than 92% of the non-Thai victims have been identified. About 80% of the non-Thai victims were identified by dental information. This high success rate of dental identification in Thailand was a matter of surprise for many forensic experts. Identification based on dental information is a highly efficient, reliable and rapid procedure. The conclusions drawn from the identification of tsunami victims in Thailand were recently discussed at the 17th Meeting of the Standing Committee on Disaster Victim Iden

Management on tsunami causing posttraumatic stress disorder: a case report.

On December 26, 2004, tsunamis hit Southeast Asia and caused serious damage and loss of lives. In Thailand, six provinces (Ranong, Phang-Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun) were impacted. The present study reports the psychiatric assessments such as Thai GHQ-60 and IES. It also reports management techniques of both cognitive behavior therapy and medication. Those were provided to a Thai female patient who was 54 years old. The patient responded to treatment quickly because of early management. The tsunami victim with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is not an individual. A mass of people
