Microvasculature of the thyroid gland in the common tree shrew (Tupaia glis): microvascular corrosion cast/scanning electron microscopy study.

A thyroid vascular cast of the common tree shrew (Tupaia glis) was obtained by injection of Batson's No. 17 plastic mixture into the ascending aorta. The cast was studied under the scanning electron microscope. It was found that each half of the gland is supplied by a large superior and a rather small inferior thyroid artery. After plunging into the gland, the arteries divide into smaller branches that are the interlobular, intralobular and follicular arteries (afferent vessels). The basket-like capillaries arising from the follicular arteries and encapsulating thyroid follicles are of large d

Pharmacological Characterization of Vasomotor Responses in the Tree Shrew (Tupaia belangeri) Basilar Artery: A Promising Model for Human Cerebrovascular Research.

The tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri) is increasingly recognized as an important experimental model for studying human diseases due to its close phylogenetic relationship with humans. Because the basilar artery's response to endogenous vasoactive mediators varies among species, we investigated the effects of vasoactive substances on isolated tupaia basilar arteries to determine whether this species is suitable as a human model. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and histamine (His) induced contraction, while bradykinin (BK) and acetylcholine (ACh) produced concentration-dependent relaxation. Pharmacologic

Diversity in mammalian chiasmatic architecture: ipsilateral axons are deflected at glial arches in the prechiasmatic optic nerve of the eutherian Tupaia belangeri.

Permanent ipsilaterally projecting axons approach the chiasmatic midline in rodents but are confined to lateral parts of the optic chiasm in marsupials. Hence, principally different mechanisms were thought to underlie axon pathway choice in eutherian (placental) and marsupial mammals. First evidence of diversity in eutherian chiasmatic architecture came from studies in the newborn and adult tree shrew Tupaia belangeri (Jeffery et al. [1998] J. Comp. Neurol. 390:183-193). Here, as in marsupials, ipsilaterally projecting axons do not approach the midline. The present study aims to clarify how th

Molecular identification and antiviral function of the guanylate-binding protein (GBP) genes in the Chinese tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinesis).

Following viral detection and interferons (IFNs) production, several hundreds of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) are subsequently induced to act as direct antiviral effectors or regulators of the IFN signaling. The guanylate-binding protein (GBP) family belongs to IFN-inducible GTPases defending the host against a diverse group of invading pathogens such as parasites, bacteria and viruses. The Chinese tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinese) has been increasingly used as an alternative experimental animal to primates in studying viral infectious diseases. Hitherto, the tree shrew GBP family has not b

Cloning of glucocorticoid receptor and mineralocorticoid receptor cDNA and gene expression in the central nervous system of the tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri).

The glucocorticoid (GR) and the mineralocorticoid (MR) receptor mediate corticosteroid actions in the mammalian brain. Here, we report the sequence and distribution of both receptor subtype mRNAs in the central nervous system of the tree shrew Tupaia belangeri, a non-rodent mammal, phylogenetically located between insectivores and primates. The specific glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptor cDNAs were cloned, employing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods. The GR cDNA and MR cDNA encode the 776-amino acid (aa) and 977-aa receptor, respectively. Comparisons of both GR and MR wi

Identification of SEC14 like lipid binding 2(SEC14L2) sequence and expression profiles in the Chinese tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinensis).

BACKGROUND: The product of the SEC14L2 (SEC14 Like Lipid Binding 2) gene belongs to a family of lipid-binding proteins including Sec14p, alpha-tocopherol transfer protein, and cellular retinol-binding protein. SEC14L2 expression enables replication of clinical hepatitis C virus (HCV) isolates in several hepatoma cell lines, and mutations in SEC14L2 may enhance HCV replication in vitro. The Chinese tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinensis) is a potential animal model for studying HCV replication, however, the cDNA sequence, protein structure, and expression of the Chinese tree shrew SEC14L2 gene

RNA sequencing and proteomic profiling reveal alterations by MPTP in chronic stomach mucosal injury in tree shrew Chinese (Tupaia belangeri chinensis).

1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) is a neurotoxin that can cause gastrointestinal ulcers by affecting dopamine levels. Therefore, MPTP has been considered a toxic substance that causes gastric ulcer disease in experimental animals. In this study, tree shrews were used as the animal model of gastric mucosa injury, and MPTP was intraperitoneally injected at a lower MPTP dosage 2 mg/kg/day for 13 weeks, while tree shrews were not injected as the control group. Under the light microscope, local congestion or diffuse bleeding points of gastric mucosa and multiple redness and swell

Cross-sectional atlas of the tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri) head, neck, and trunk: a comparison of micro-CT imaging and cadaveric sections.

INTRODUCTION: Tree shrews are widely used as animal models in various research fields, however, a comprehensive cross-sectional anatomic reference for this species is currently lacking. METHODS: In this study, Conventional Micro-CT scanning (40 μm slice thickness) was performed on two healthy adult tree shrews to obtain head-neck-thorax-abdomen cross-sectional images. Upon completion of the CT session, the tree shrew was euthanized and transferred to a -20 °C freezer until completely frozen maintaining the same position the plastic support. Subsequently, the specimen was transversely sectione

Expression of Testis-specific Serine/Threonine Kinases during the Reproductive and Nonreproductive Seasons and Their Localization in Mature Spermatozoa of Tree Shrews (Tupaia belangeri).

Tree shrews display obvious reproductive cycles, and sexually mature male tree shrews produce little or no sperm with extremely low motility during the nonreproductive season; the mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unknown. Because testis-specific serine/threonine kinases (TSSK) are specifically expressed in the testis and male germ cells of mammals, we hypothesized that they may have an important role in spermatogenesis or sperm function regulation in tree shrews. In addition, the expression, distribution, subcellular localization, and dynamic changes of TSSK in tree shrew sperm are

Characterization of the Tupaia rhabdovirus genome reveals a long open reading frame overlapping with P and a novel gene encoding a small hydrophobic protein.

Rhabdoviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses of the order Mononegavirales and have been isolated from vertebrates, insects, and plants. Members of the genus Lyssavirus cause the invariably fatal disease rabies, and a member of the genus Vesiculovirus, Chandipura virus, has recently been associated with acute encephalitis in children. We present here the complete genome sequence and transcription map of a rhabdovirus isolated from cultivated cells of hepatocellular carcinoma tissue from a moribund tree shrew. The negative-strand genome of tupaia rhabdovirus is composed of 11,440 nucleotides

Evidence for a direct arteriovenous connection (A-V shunt) between the testicular artery and pampiniform plexus in the spermatic cord of the tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

In the tree shrew Tupaia glis, 5 or 6 small ramifying arterioles arose directly from the testicular artery and then gave off numerous small capillaries. The capillaries made a series of anastomoses with neighbouring counterpart capillaries to become a complicated network. Some of the capillaries drained into a small venule, which was connected directly with the testicular vein (pampiniform plexus), to form an arteriovenous connection (A-V shunt) between the testicular artery and the pampiniform plexus. This A-V shunt appears to make the transfer of substances from the pampiniform plexus to the

First Record of the Tortoise Tick, Amblyomma geoemydae (Cantor, 1847) (Acari: Ixodidae) Parasitizing a Tree Shrew, Tupaia glis (Scandentia: Tupaiidae) in West Malaysia.

The tick genus Amblyomma Koch, 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae) has received little attention in Malaysia; therefore, its associated hosts and distribution records are poorly known. In this study, we collected six Amblyomma sp. individuals (two larvae and four adults) that infested a common treeshrew, Tupaia glis (Diard, 1820) (Scandentia: Tupaiidae) caught in a recreational area in Sungai Lembing, Pahang (West Malaysia). The adult female ticks were morphologically identified according to taxonomic keys prior to molecular identification using cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rDNA genes. The ti

Light and electron microscopic immunocytochemical study on the innervation of the pineal gland of the tree shrew (Tupaia glis), with special reference to peptidergic synaptic junctions with pinealocytes.

Conventional and immunocytochemical, light- and electron-microscopic studies on the innervation of the pineal gland of the tree shrew (Tupaia glis) were made. Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive fibers, which were abundantly distributed in the gland, disappeared almost completely after superior cervical ganglionectomy, suggesting that these fibers are mostly postganglionic sympathetic fibers. By contrast, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive fibers, which were less numerous than NPY-fibers, remained in considerable numbers in ganglionectomized animals, indicating the innervation of TH-posi

Evidence of a direct projection from the medial terminal nucleus of the accessory optic system to lobule IX of the cerebellar cortex in the tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

Injections of a wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate were placed in representative areas of the cerebellar cortex of adult tree shrews. Retrogradely labeled cells were found in the medial terminal nucleus (MTN) of the accessory optic system (AOS) when ventral portions of the uvula were involved in the injection site. These labeled cells are small to medium sized and have round or oval somata and few primary dendrites. The AOS functions to stabilize the eyes and head in space. The present observations provide evidence of a direct projection from the MTN of the tree shrew AOS t

Multiple components in restriction enzyme digests of mammalian (insectivore), avian and reptilian genomic DNA hybridize with murine immunoglobulin VH probes.

High molecular weight genomic DNAs isolated from an insectivore, Tupaia, and a representative reptilian, Caiman, and avian, Gallus, were digested with restriction endonucleases transferred to nitrocellulose and hybridized with nick-translated probes of murine VH genes. The derivations of the probes designated S107V (1) and mu 107V (2,3) have been described previously. Under conditions of reduced stringency, multiple hybridizing components were observed with Tupaia and Caiman; only mu mu 107V exhibited significant hybridization with the separated fragments of Gallus DNA. Mammalian frontal diploic vein and the human foramen caecum.

The course of the frontal diploic vein in the mole Talpa and the tree shrew Tupaia is described and compared to the frontal diploic vein of other mammals. The frontal diploic vein in Talpa and Tupaia connects the dorsal sagittal sinus to the veins of the orbit and has an emissary function. In certain other mammals it has a diploic function and may drain towards the orbit (e.g., Orycteropus) or towards the dorsal sagittal sinus (e.g., Didelphis). The frontal diploic vein of these mammals is not homologous to the vein of the human foramen caecum, but to the human frontal diploic vein. The vein o

"The diencephalon of Ptilocercus lowii (pen-tailed tree-shrew)".

The pen-tailed tree-shrew (Ptilocercus lowii) has been regarded by Le Gros Clark (1926), and Martin (1968) to possess more primitive morphological and to a certain extent, neuro-anatomical characteristics than the other tree-shrew species belonging to the sub-family Tupaiinae. Investigations have been carried out on the diencephalon of Ptilocercus lowii which has not been completely done by Le Gros Clark and other workers since 1926, to find out whether the diencephalon has actually undegone any phylogenetic changes that should be more advanced than those of the Insectivora or remain more prim

The pulvinar nucleus of Galago senegalensis.

The present study was undertaken to analyze the connections of the pulvinar nucleus in a prosimian. The experiments, which rely on the Fink-Heimer ('67) method for staining degenerating axons and their terminals, fall into two parts: first, the tracing of ascending tectal projections to the caudal thalamus and second, the tracing of projections from this thalamic target to the cortex. Large lesions of the superior colliculus resulted in dense degeneration in the caudal half of the inferior subdivision of the pulvinar complex. Prevalence of Strongyloides sp. and Nippostrongylus sp. in small mammals, Malaysia.

Parasitic nematodes remain important zoonotic pathogens, particularly in tropical regions where human-animal interactions facilitate pathogen transmission. This study investigated the prevalence and genetic characteristics of Strongyloides sp. and Nippostrongylus sp. among non-volant small mammals in Peninsular Malaysia during 2025-2026. A total of 46 small mammals, comprising 28 rats (Rattus spp.) and 18 treeshrews (Tupaia spp.), were screened using PCR targeting the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) gene. Nippostrongylus sp. was detected in 25.0% (7/28) of rats but was absent in treeshre
