Analysis of the development of human foetal nasal turbinates using CBCT imaging.

PURPOSE: The morphological structure of the nasal cavity (NC) is important for endoscopic surgical treatment. The location of nasal turbinates, including the superior turbinate (ST), middle turbinate (MT) and inferior turbinate (IT), are well presented during the formation of the human NC in cone beam CT (CBCT) images. There is a complex relationship between the nasal sinuses, the maxillary sinus (MS), ethmoidal sinus and sphenoid sinus, during formation of the NC structure at the morphological level. There is a need to clearly define the relationships of these nasal elements at the ossificati

Unilateral Absence of Ethmoid Sinus and Nasal Turbinates: A Rare Case Report.

A variety of anatomical variation of paranasal sinus and nasal turbinates exist, as its development is a complex and long standing process. Computerized Tomography (CT) of the paranasal sinuses is a very valuable tool in diagnosing these variations. Preoperatively defining the anatomical variations of the intranasal structures is essential in performing the safe functional endoscopic sinus surgery and to avoid unnecessary complications. Several degrees and combinations of aplasias and hypoplasias have been reported. We report a case of 37-year-old male who presented with bilateral nasal block

On or within: spatial determinants of antigen handling in the nasal turbinates.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has renewed interest in mucosal vaccines, yet these approaches have long struggled to generate durable protection against airway pathogens. A key limitation is the incomplete understanding of how upper airway antigens are handled to shape immune response quality and durability. Antigens located within the airspace or on the mucosal surface can be directly sampled by mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues (MALTs), such as Nasal-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) in mice, or tonsils in humans. Because MALTs lack afferent lymphatics, antigen entry occurs primarily across a spe

Middle turbinate preservation versus middle turbinate resection in endoscopic surgical treatment of nasal polyposis.

CONCLUSION: Relapse in patients affected by nasal polyposis and subjected to endoscopic surgery appears to be a relevant feature. Surgical treatment shows a significant increase in quality of life in all the patients aside from surgical technique used. Our results show a better control of relapse of nasal pathology in patients subjected to more radical surgery (group B) vs patients subjected to conservative surgery on middle turbinate (group A). Allergic patients in group B had a smaller number of relapses during the follow-up period compared with allergic patients in group A and this was stat

Treatment of inferior turbinate hypertrophy by plasma turbinate reduction with one-point-three-side way.

OBJECTIVES: Nasal congestion is often the main symptom of the patients with non-allergic rhinitis, who have inferior turbinate hypertrophy if getting poor treatment effect. Plasma treatment for inferior turbinate hypertrophy can effectively improve nasal obstruction. Generally, plasma treatment with multiple puncture sites, makes patients intraoperative painful and postoperative bleeding, which let patients often fear of surgery. Postoperative nasal adhesion or lower turbinate scar and other complications sometimes happened, and some patients still feel nasal obstruction due to severe mucosal

[Transsubmucosal maxilloethmoid sinus surgery through inferior turbinate (swinging of nasolacrimal duct and inferior turbinate)].

We recently devised a new technique for endonasal surgery, which simplifies maxillary antrotomy and ethmoidectomy, and dilates the middle nasal meatus widely enough to allow easier postoperative observation. Surgery is initiated by an incision similar to the one used for submucosal resection of the inferior turbinate. The bony inferior turbinate is resected, and the nasolacrimal duct is freed from the bone. Subsequently, the maxillary and ethmoidal sinuses are excenterated, with swinging of the membranaceous inferior turbinate and the nasolacrimal duct. Postoperative observation confirmed sati

Bilateral Polypoid Degeneration of the Inferior Turbinates Mimicking Intranasal Neoplasia: A Case Report.

Lesions of the inferior turbinate are exceedingly rare, with one retrospective series identifying only 34 cases over 14 years. Of those, approximately 68 % were benign (predominantly hemangiomas), and about 32 % were malignant (most commonly non-Hodgkin's lymphoma). Data on polypoid degeneration of the inferior turbinate are limited, particularly regarding histopathologic features and treatment outcomes. This case report aims to contribute to the existing literature by providing detailed clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings, as well as therapeutic considerations for this rare entity.

The effects of choanal atresia on development of the paranasal sinuses and turbinates.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the volume of paranasal sinuses (PNS) and turbinate in patients with unilateral choanal atresia (CA). MATERIALS AND METHOD: Computed tomography images of PNS in 11 individuals with unilateral CA were evaluated retrospectively. Mucosal thickness and volume of the maxillary, frontal and sphenoidal sinuses were determined, in addition to the volume of the middle and inferior turbinate. The unaffected nasal side of patients was used as a control group for the measurements. The results comprised the measurements of the atresic side compared to t

Anatomical variations of the lateral nasal wall: The secondary and accessory middle turbinates.

The aim of the current anatomical and clinical study was to audit our cases of patients who presented with secondary and/or accessory middle turbinates during a two-year period. We investigated the incidence and the clinical impact of these variations. Twenty-eight patients, 19 males and 9 females with a mean age of 41.5 years, representing different ethnic origins, were diagnosed with double middle turbinates based on endoscopic examination. Of those, 92.8% had a main symptom of refractory frontal headache. A secondary nasal symptom was sensation of blocked nose. Patients who underwent endosc

Light and scanning electron microscopic studies of the nasal turbinates of the horse.

The nasal turbinates of 5 young horses were studied by light and scanning electron-microscopy. Stratified cuboidal epithelium lined the rostral part of the dorsal and ventral nasal turbinates of the vestibular region. The polyangular microvillus cells of this region were separated by linear depressions. The mid and caudal parts of the dorsal and ventral nasal turbinates and the rostral part of the ethmoturbinates were lined by pseudostratified columnar ciliated respiratory epithelium. Numerous cilia with dilated blebs on the ciliated cells concealed adjacent non-ciliated supporting cells and g

'Priapism' of the turbinates: a cause of nasal obstruction in sickle cell anaemia.

A cause of nasal obstruction in sickle cell anaemia not previously described in the literature is presented. The pathophysiology is the same as in priapism because of the similarities in the vascular arrangement of the turbinate and the penis. Various treatment options are considered but the best results were achieved by surgical reduction of the inferior turbinates.

Frontal sinusitis caused by first and second secondary middle turbinates co-existing with an accessory middle turbinate.

The anatomy of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses is complex. After widespread use of endoscopes and computed tomography, many variations have been described. Secondary and accessory middle turbinates (AMTs) can mimic the real middle turbinate. These variations may arise during embryological development. I believe that detailed knowledge of anomalies of the sinonasal tract is critical for successful management, and important in enabling the surgeon to perform safe surgery. Failure to recognize the variants could lead to inadvertent damage to the orbital lamina papyracea during surgery.

A prospective histopathological analysis of the inferior turbinate: which functional parts should be preserved during turbinate surgery?

OBJECTIVE: Inferior turbinate (IT) hypertrophy-induced chronic nasal obstruction is one of the most common problems in rhinology. However, the histopathological analysis of the hypertrophic IT is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the histological changes and the most functional areas of the IT to assist otolaryngologists with improving and modifying surgical techniques and minimizing potential complications. METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the contribution of hypertrophic IT to nasal obstruction. For the analysis, a total of 38 adult p

The Impact of Middle Turbinate Concha Bullosa on the Severity of Inferior Turbinate Hypertrophy in Patients with a Deviated Nasal Septum.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Inferior turbinate hypertrophy and concha bullosa often occur opposite the direction of nasal septal deviation. The objective of this retrospective study was to determine whether a concha bullosa impacts inferior turbinate hypertrophy in patients who have nasal septal deviation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The electronic medical record was used to identify sinus CT scans exhibiting nasal septal deviation for 100 adult subjects without and 100 subjects with unilateral middle turbinate concha bullosa. Exclusion criteria included previous sinonasal surgery, tumor, sinusitis, s

Radiofrequency inferior turbinate reduction improves smell ability of patients with chronic rhinitis and inferior turbinate hypertrophy.

Radiofrequency inferior turbinate reduction (RFITR) of inferior turbinate hypertrophy (ITH) is an effective way to treat patients with intractable nasal mucosal obstruction. The objective of this study was to assess smell ability, nasal symptoms, inferior turbinate grading (ITG), peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) of patients with chronic rhinitis (CR), and ITH before and after RFITR. Patients with CR and ITH, aged 18-60 years, who underwent RFITR, were prospectively recruited. Smell ability (measured by smell detection threshold [SDT]), visual analog scale (VAS) of nasal symptoms, ITG, and PN

A secondary middle turbinate co-existing with an accessory middle turbinate: an unusual combination of two anatomic variations.

The anatomy of the nasal cavity lateral wall is quite complex; this is where most anatomical anomalies occur. The secondary middle turbinate, a bony projection that arises from the lateral nasal wall, is a rare variation, differing from the accessory middle turbinate by its distinct developmental origin. We report on an unusual case involving a combination of these two turbinate variations. We believe that detailed knowledge of anatomical anomalies in the sinonasal tract is critical for successful clinical management and important in allowing the surgeon to perform safe functional endoscopic s

Morphology, Not Only Volume: A Study on Empty Nose Syndrome and Inferior Turbinates.

OBJECTIVES: Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is an underdiagnosed but burdensome clinical condition. Studies that have addressed the impact of remnant inferior turbinate volume (ITV) on ENS are scarce. We aimed to evaluate the impact of ITV and phenotyping on the severity and presentation of ENS. METHODS: All the enrolled patients underwent the following subjective assessments: the ENS 6-Item Questionnaire (ENS6Q), Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-25 (SNOT-25), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The ITV was obtained from finely cut (1-mm-thick slices) sino-nasal computed
