OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a patient with a serious defect of the tympanic membrane (TM) will be able to dive after surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors describe three patients who were divers with serious defects of the TM (more than 75% of TM). In all three cases, cartilage palisade tympanoplasty was used to reconstruct the TM.
RESULTS: Six months after surgery, the patients passed clinical examinations, audiograms (hearing restored to normal), tympanometry (increased stiffness of the TM), and pressure tolerance tests in hyperbaric chamber (30-m immersion was simulated for 4 min

This retrospective study compares the tympanoplasty success rate when using a xenograft (Zenoderm) or an autograft (temporalis fascia). Fifty-three ears were operated on over a three-year period. All the tympanoplasty operations were performed by the same surgeon. There were 43 ears in the temporalis fascia autograft group and 10 ears in the Zenoderm xenograft group. Both groups were similar with respect to patient age, type of tympanoplasty, area of tympanic membrane perforation and condition of the contralateral ear. The tympanoplasty success rate in the temporalis fascia autograft group was

BACKGROUND & AIM: Tympanic membrane perforation is a common cause of conductive hearing loss and otologic morbidities. The most common cause is trauma, which tends to heal spontaneously. Conversely, perforations caused by infections or middle ear pathology require surgical intervention, such as tympanoplasty. While cartilage tympanoplasty provides benefits of durability and resistance to retraction, concerns persist regarding graft rigidity and its adverse effects on hearing outcomes. This study was implemented to assess the anatomical and functional success of an innovative and novel form of

Our objective was to identify the factors that could influence the success rate of type 1 tympanoplasty in a tertiary care centre where both residents and senior surgeons perform this operation. Six hundred and seven patients who had been performed type 1 tympanoplasty as a primary otologic surgery between January 1997 and December 2004 were retrospectively chart reviewed. The patients had intact and mobile ossicular chain peroperatively. Patients with any other macroscopic otologic pathology like cholesteatoma, granulation in the middle ear and osteitis in mastoid cells were excluded from the

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Pediatric tympanoplasty is still a matter of controversy. Many factors have been associated with the surgical outcome of tympanoplasty in children, including age, size and location of the perforation, surgical technique and Eustachian tube dysfunction. The optimal approach and timing of this surgery remains controversial. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of pediatric tympanoplasty and analyze factors that may influence the success of this surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted which included children from 5 to 15 years old tha

Techniques and biomaterials for reconstructive middle ear surgery are under steady, ongoing development. At the same time, clinical post-surgery results are evaluated to determine success or failure of the therapy. Routine quality assessment and assurance is of growing importance in the medical field, and therefore also in middle ear surgery. The exact definition and acquisition of outcome parameters is essential for both a comprehensive and detailed quality assurance. These parameters are not the audiological results alone, but also additional individual parameters which influence the postope

OBJECTIVE: To present the rise and decline of allograft tympanoplasty and investigate how the challenges it has faced may inform us of its future.
DATA SOURCES: Articles and books published over the last 48 years that refer to allograft tympanoplasty or its historical roots.
HISTORY: The first published account of allograft tympanoplasty is by Ned Chalat in 1964; however, whether he was the first to use the technique is controversial. In 1966, Jean Marquet published the first clinically successful use of allograft tympanic membranes. Since that time, a number of surgeons have trialed both en

OBJECTIVES: To report anatomic and physiologic characteristics of the tympanic membrane, to discuss the etiology and pathogenesis of tympanic perforation, and to discuss its management.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: After a review of the literature, different surgical techniques and the postoperative results were evaluated.
RESULTS: The rate of tympanic membrane closure is greater than 90% for the majority of authors. Age, mucosa inflammation, pathological contralateral ear (perforation, otitis media, cholesteatoma), and surgical experience influence this result.
DISCUSSION: Even if surgical result

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The timing of pediatric tympanoplasty is controversial despite many studies reporting on the relationship between patient age and tympanoplasty results. This update reviews the literature to examine the role of age and other factors on the success of tympanoplasty in children.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple studies, both recent and past, have largely reported no difference in the success rate of pediatric tympanoplasty as a function of age. In addition, these studies as a whole have offered a conflicting mix of other parameters that may or may not affect the surgical result.

The management of only hearing ears remains controversial because of the risk of postoperative hearing deterioration. We reviewed 12 cases of hearing ears alone operated on at the Hyogo College of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology from 1999 to 2002. All ears were dry at the final examination. Postoperative hearing results were evaluated based on the guideline of the Japan Otological Society (2000). An air bone gap within 15 dB was found in 9 cases (75%), hearing gain exceeding 15 dB was found in 6 cases (50%), the hearing level was within 30 dB in 4 cases (33.3%), and total successful case
