Validity aspects of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, narcissistic personality disorder construct.

BACKGROUND: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), Fourth Edition, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) construct has been criticized for being too narrowly defined, for example, by focusing on overt grandiosity at the expense of exhibitionism and narcissistic vulnerability and thus covering only parts of the domain of narcissism. The purpose of this study was to elucidate several validity aspects of the NPD construct. METHODS: The material consisted of data from 2277 patients (80% of whom had a personality disorder [PD]) who were admitted to units connected to Th

Neurobiological correlates of personality dimensions in borderline personality disorder using graph analysis of functional connectivity.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is is a type B personality disorder primarily characterized by a pattern of unstable interpersonal relationships, a distorted self-concept, and intense emotional reactions, associated with extreme and opposing mental and behavioral states, which coexist and lead to destructive behaviors such as self-harm, commonly recurring over time.. The Personality Inventory for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), Fifth Edition (PID-5) provides a dimensional assessment of maladaptive domains associated with personality disorders, improving t

Prevalence of the alternative model of personality disorders diagnoses in populational and at-risk samples, gender and age groups comparisons, and normative data for the LPFS-SR and PID-5.

The Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD), introduced in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), was proposed as a new operationalization of personality disorders (PDs) aiming to overcome the several limitations of the traditional symptom-based model (Waugh et al., 2017; Zimmerman et al., 2019). In the AMPD, PDs are defined by two-dimensional criteria (the level of personality functioning and maladaptive personality traits), but as a hybrid model, it also allows for categorical assessment of PDs (i.e.

Facial emotion recognition deficits and alexithymia in borderline, narcissistic, and histrionic personality disorders.

Previous studies that aimed to support emotion recognition deficits and alexithymia in B cluster personality disorders have mainly focused on borderline personality disorder (BPD), and resulted in mixed findings. In our study we examine emotion recognition and alexithymia in patients with histrionic (HPD), narcissistic (NPD) and borderline (BPD) personality disorders compared to each other and healthy controls. Furthermore, the possibility is investigated that it is not the type of PD but the severity of psychopathology which predicts the severity of emotion recognition deficits and alexithymi

Lay theories of etiology and "cure" for four types of paraphilia: fetishism; pedophilia; sexual sadism; and voyeurism.

The current study set out to investigate the structure, determinants, and relationship between lay theories of the etiology and efficacy of "cures" for four types of paraphilia: fetishism, pedophilia, sexual sadism, and voyeurism. One hundred and five participants completed a four-part questionnaire, which was divided into (a) demographic details, (b) perceptions of the etiology, (c) ratings of cure for each paraphilia, and (d) the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Previous studies of lay theories have demonstrated a clear and interpretable factor structure similar to that of explicit academi

Types of alcoholics, II. Application of an empirically derived typology to treatment matching.

Data from 79 male alcoholics who were randomly assigned to either coping skills training or interactional group psychotherapy were used to replicate a multidimensional, empirically derived typology and to evaluate the typology's usefulness in matching patients to treatment. Consistent with previous cluster analysis research, indicators of risk for alcoholism, alcohol dependence, drinking history, and psychopathological impairment distinguished alcoholics along two broad dimensions of vulnerability and severity, with one subtype (type B alcoholics) manifesting an earlier onset of problem drinki

Court-ordered forensic psychiatry treatment in prison: determinants of outcome and risk mitigation.

BACKGROUND: Court-ordered forensic psychiatry treatments (COT) are specifically designed to reduce the risk of violence in mentally disordered offenders. Given their high costs and ethical issues, mental health professionals need admission criteria to be able to select those candidates with optimal benefit. This study analyses offender-related and treatment-related determinants of COT outcome and risk mitigation. METHODS: This two-year longitudinal study assessed the evolution of 117 adult offenders admitted to a specialized medium-security forensic psychiatry clinic. Treatment outcome includ

Hostility modifies the association between TV viewing and cardiometabolic risk.

BACKGROUND: It was hypothesized that television viewing is predictive of cardiometabolic risk. Moreover, people with hostile personality type may be more susceptible to TV-induced negative emotions and harmful health habits which increase occurrence of cardiometabolic risk. PURPOSE: The prospective association of TV viewing on cardiometabolic risk was examined along with whether hostile personality trait was a modifier. METHODS: A total of 3,269 Black and White participants in the coronary artery risk development in young adults (CARDIA) study were assessed from age 23 to age 35. A cross-lag

Psychosocial correlates of body fat distribution in black and white young adults.

We examined the association of fat distribution with a number of personality attributes and behaviours in a sample of 5115 young blacks and whites. Body fat distribution, measured by the ratio of waist-to-hip circumferences (WHR), was significantly and positively associated with cigarette smoking and negatively associated with education in all of the race and sex groups. WHR was positively associated with alcohol consumption in men and black women and with marijuana use in women. A number of psychosocial factors assessing personality attributes and behaviours were also examined, including the

Plasma blood group glycosyltransferase activities after bone marrow transplantation.

Human blood groups (ABO) are known to be determined by the terminal glycosyl residues attached to common carbohydrate chains of the red cell surface. N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase (A-enzyme) in blood group A persons and galactosyltransferase (B-enzyme) in blood group B persons are responsible for producing A and B substances on the red cell surface, with both enzymes absent in blood group O persons. The plasma transferase (A - and B-) activity was assayed after the complete replacement of the bone marrow of patients with acute leukemia or aplastic anemia by transplantation bone marrow from

[Narcolepsy and the psychiatric tableau. A specific form of narcolepsy?].

Narcolepsy is a well-known hypersomnia. Nevertheless narcolepsy in which the hallucinatory component is unusually prominent may lead to a false diagnosis of schizophrenia syndrome. This aspect is illustrated by the case of Miss B. who appears like a psychotic patient without dissociation syndrome and with a hysterical personality. Are the narcoleptics with psychiatric disorders a peculiar sub-type of narcolepsy? Fourty-five percent of our eleven narcoleptics patients have an associated psychiatric disorder. Most of them are depressive. Surprisingly fourty percent of our patients are non-DR2 at

Type A behavior in women: a review.

This review focuses on characteristics of the Type A behavior pattern in women in studies of demographic characteristics, physiological responses, laboratory performance, and personality. With some exceptions, these characteristics parallel those previously described for Type A men. The incidence of Type A behavior in the United States is comparable for men and women when socioeconomic factors are controlled. Type A behavior in women is positively correlated with socioeconomic status, occupation, education, and incidence of coronary heart disease. Type A women tend to show greater autonomic ar

[Psychological characteristics of patients with ischemic heart disease and behavioral risk factor (type A personality)].

Psychological features were examined in 64 coronary heart disease (CHD) patients with type A behavioral risk factor. CHD was diagnosed after all the patients had undergone selective coronary angiography. To study personality traits, traditional psychological methods were used such as MMPI, the Spilberger questionnaire, Jenkins' questionnaire scores. According to the scores of MMPI (5MF, 8 Sc, Osi, F), type A behavior subjects were demonstrated to have lower ratings than type B behavior ones. No differences in anxiety shown by people were found. The findings suggest that Type A persons are incl
