Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive rod that is now recognized as a rare cause of frank disease in the neutropenic hematologic malignancy patient. Because this pathogen is rarely isolated in clinical specimens, no large studies exist to guide the management of these acutely ill patients. Individual case reports and case series exist in the literature describing various clinical manifestations of B. cereus in the neutropenic patient including bacteremia/septicemia, pneumonia, meningitis/encephalitis, hepatic abscesses, and gastritis. In this report, we describe a case of typhlitis caused by B. c

Appendicular intussusception is a rare form of intestinal intussusception where the appendix itself invaginates into the adjacent cecum or colon. It accounts for a small percentage of all intussusception cases, most commonly affecting children. Its association with ileocolic intussusception, particularly in the context of mural thickening caused by typhlitis, is even more uncommon. We present a 9-year-old boy with medullary aplasia who developed diffuse abdominal pain, vomiting, and dark stools. Laboratory results showed pancytopenia, and imaging revealed significant circumferential thickening

This retrospective chart review describes pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or acute myeloid leukemia diagnosed between January 1999 and January 2008, who were identified with enteritis, typhlitis, or colitis. Among the acute leukemia patients, 33/449 (7.3%) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 13/89 (14.6%) with acute myeloid leukemia experienced 51 episodes of enteritis (n=8), typhlitis (n=15), colitis (n=19), or enterocolitis (n=9). Twenty-five (49%) patients were exposed to corticosteroids within 14 days of the episode and 35 (68.6%) had fever and neutropenia concurrent

BACKGROUND: Heterakis gallinarum (H. gallinarum) is a common poultry parasite that can be found in the ceca of many gallinaceous bird species, causing minor pathology and reduced weight gain. Most infections go unnoticed in commercial flocks due to the dependence on fecal egg counts, which are prone to false-negative diagnoses. Furthermore, there is a lack of research on gastrointestinal nematodes that use molecular identification methods, which could be essential for rapid diagnosis and developing efficient control approaches. As a result, the study aimed to look at the cause of mortality in

An investigation related to the frequency and pathology of Heterakis gallinarum and pathology of Heterakis isolonche in pheasants from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was conducted by means of clinical examinations, necropsies, and histopathological analysis in 50 ring-necked pheasants from backyard flocks of 11 localities; also, histological sections of caeca of golden pheasants deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC) have been considered in the present study. During necropsies, only specimens of H. gallinarum were recovered with a prevalence of 90%, mean int

BACKGROUND: Typhlitis, (neutropenic enterocolitis), is a necrotizing enteropathy of the right colon, and is characterized by the clinical triad of fever, abdominal pain, neutropenia and imaging findings of right-side colonic inflammation. It is seen in the setting of severe neutropenia in immune suppressed patients who undergo treatment for malignancies, in those who have organ transplant(s) or congenital or other acquired immunosuppression. We report the clinical and imaging findings of typhlitis in pediatric cancer patients who had received chemotherapy in the largest tertiary center in Addi

BACKGROUND: Heterakidosis is one of the most prevalent parasitic diseases in birds, the caecae of a variety of wild and domestic birds are infected with these nematodes. In pheasants, nodular typhlitis is a lethal disease caused mainly by infection with Heterakis isolonche alone or in conjunction with Heterakis gallinarum. H. gallinarum has long been recognized to infect birds with low pathogenicity, with only a few fatal cases previously reported.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This paper describes a case of fatal nodular typhlitis due to H. gallinarum in a male and female pair of adult golden pheasants

Unlike in chickens, dynamics of the gut microbiome in turkeys is limitedly understood and no data were yet published in context of pathological changes following experimental infection. Thus, the impact of Histomonas meleagridis-associated inflammatory changes in the caecal microbiome, especially the Escherichia coli population and their caecal wall invasion in turkeys was investigated. Birds experimentally inoculated with attenuated and/or virulent H. meleagridis and non-inoculated negative controls were divided based on the severity of macroscopic caecal lesions. The high throughput amplicon

Typhlitis (neutropenic enterocolitis) and Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) are two separate medical conditions. Typhlitis is the inflammation of the cecum and usually occurs in neutropenic patients. CDI is a life-threatening disease of the digestive tract and affects immunocompromised patients. The challenge is when both conditions occur together, especially in patients with hematological malignancies and immune compromise post-chemotherapy. This report of a rare case aims to highlight the co-occurrence of typhlitis and CDI in a patient on chemotherapy after being diagnosed with acute

BACKGROUND: Typhlitis is clinically defined by the triad of neutropenia, abdominal pain, and fever. Radiologic evidence of colonic inflammation supports the diagnosis. We report a single United Kingdom tertiary center experience with management and outcome of typhlitis for 5 years.
METHODS: Hospital computerized records were screened for ultrasound or computerized tomographic scan requests for abdominal pain for all oncology inpatients (2001-2005). Retrospective case note analysis was used to collect clinical data for patients with features of typhlitis.
RESULTS: The incidence of typhlitis a

An 18-yr-old female Western lowland gorilla ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla) presented with acute-onset severe lethargy, bloody vaginal discharge, decreased appetite, and an abnormal posture. The gorilla was diagnosed with a ruptured cecal blind sac with severe adhesions to the right ovary. A typhlectomy and unilateral ovariectomy were performed. Histologic examination identified a severe transmural circumferential typhlitis with rupture and adhesions to the infundibulum and chronic typhlitis. Postoperative management included antibiotics, analgesics, short-term dietary modifications, and probiotics

We report on the case of a 24-year-old white man with a history of chronic leukemia treated with unrelated bone marrow transplantation and chemotherapy who was correctly diagnosed with appendicitis rather than typhlitis. The approach to diagnosing an acute abdomen in the leukemic patient is discussed, with particular focus on appendicitis vs. typhlitis. A focused CT scan proved to be instrumental in making the correct diagnosis of appendicitis in our patient. The literature on this topic for the past 30 years is reviewed. The purpose of our report is to demonstrate that despite the recent tren

A retrospective review of cecal and appendiceal complications occurring in young patients with acute leukemia since 1969 was performed. The objective of this study was to determine the relative incidence of appendicitis and typhlitis among patients with acute leukemia who had operation or autopsy in this institution as well as to determine the risks of operative intervention. Fifteen patients with these complications were identified among the 400 patients with acute leukemia seen during this time period. Signs and symptoms of an acute abdomen were present despite immunosuppression. The inciden

OBJECTIVE: Neutropenic enterocolitis is characterized by inflammation of the cecum and distal ileum. The clinical triad consists of fever, abdominal pain, neutropenia, and imaging findings of colonic inflammation. Herein, we report the clinical characteristics, imaging findings and risk factors of typhlitis in pediatric patients with leukemia.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 72 pediatric patients who were followed up due to acute lymphoblastic or myeloblastic leukemia and diagnosed with typhlitis were evaluated between August 2019 and March 2023. Typhlitis was diagnosed based on the pre

An outbreak of severe diarrhoea and death in young rabbits was associated with many nonenterotoxigenic Escherichia coli in the caecum. The severe clinical, pathological and bacteriological features of the diesase, acute diarrhoea associated with typhlitis and many E. coli in the caecum, could be reproduced either by the intraintestinal inoculation of many bacteria recovered aerobically or anaerobically from the caecum of these rabbits or by the intestinal inoculation of large numbers of a serogroup of E. coli, 0153, recovered from the caecum. Further experiments showed that this serogroup of E

Cultures on autoclaved maize of the phytopathogenic fungus, Drechslera campanulata, were incorporated into diets and fed to male inbred BDIX rats. In a pilot trial, a diet containing 30% D. campanulata culture material killed 5 out of 5 rats in 15-25 days. Lesions included gastric corpus erosions, gastrorrhagia and ulcerative typhlitis. Diets containing 5% or 10% culture material induced erosive to ulcerative typhlitis and oedema and hyperplasia of the ileocaecal lymph nodes in 40 out of 40 rats. Other changes included: mass loss; normocytic, hyperchromic anaemia; leukocytosis with neutrophili

Intestinal mucus accumulation is a very rare situation observed in some solid tumors, intestinal inflammation, mucosal hyperplasia, elevated intestinal pressure, and various other diseases. However, it has never been described in acute myeloblastic leukemia. The pathogenesis of intestinal mucus accumulation is still not clear. Here, we report a 14-year-old girl with acute myeloblastic leukemia and febrile neutropenia in addition to typhlitis. She was also immobilized due to joint contractures of the lower extremities and had intestinal mucus accumulation, which was, at first, misdiagnosed as i

INTRODUCTION: The primo vascular system (PVS), an intensive network structure, has been claimed to be representative of the acupuncture meridian. Here, we explored the role of the PVS in local enteritis and its modification by acupuncture.
METHODS: Chronic cecitis in rabbits was induced by 2,4,6-trinitro-benzene-sulfonic acid (TNBS). The PVS on the cecum was visualized with trypan blue staining, and collected with the help of microsurgical forceps under an optical stereomicroscope.
RESULTS: The increased primo vessels (PVs) and primo nodes (PNs) of the PVS on the surface of the cecum were in
