OBJECTIVE: Reversal of flow in the extracranial vertebral artery secondary to a proximal subclavian/innominate artery stenosis or occlusion is a frequent finding during carotid duplex ultrasonography. The characteristics of basilar artery flow are not well defined in these patients. The objective of this study is to evaluate basilar artery flow in patients with retrograde vertebral artery flow.
METHODS: From a transforaminal vice transforamen approach with the patient seated, pulsed Doppler scan spectral waveforms were obtained from the distal segment of each vertebral artery (depths of 66 mm

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare resting cerebral blood flow velocity values of unmedicated patients in the acute phase of panic disorder with resting values of healthy control subjects.
METHODS: Nineteen unmedicated panic disorder patients were assessed for degree of anxiety using the Hamilton Anxiety Scale. The patients and 20 healthy age-matched control subjects were then insonated at rest using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD). For TCD, the anterior, the middle, and the posterior cerebral arteries were insonated bilaterally in all patients.

BACKGROUND: Both cerebral hemispheres seem to contribute to motor recovery after stroke. We studied the effect of motor activity on cerebral blood flow in both hemispheres at different stages of stroke evolution.
METHODS: Thirty patients with hemiplegic stroke and 30 controls were included. Patients were examined within the first week (T1), 1 month (T2) and 6 months after stroke (T3). All subjects performed a 2-min sequential thumb-to-finger opposition task while blood flow velocities in both middle cerebral arteries were measured with transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD).

Innovative applications of clinical ocular diagnostic tools are emerging to help identify systemic disorders that extend beyond ocular diseases. Ophthalmodynamometry (ODM) is a screening tool that non-invasively determines mean central retinal artery pressure (MCRAP) and ocular perfusion pressure (OPP). Decreased OPP and MCRAP on Falck Medical Multifunctional Device (FMD, Falck Medical, Inc., Mystic, CT), along with reverse ophthalmic artery flow (ROAF) on transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD), indicate increased collateral brain perfusion and possible stenosis of the ophthalmic artery or

INTRODUCTION: Head injury is an important factor in children's morbidity and mortality. Arterial vasospasm and probably resulting from this, delayed ischemic deficit are important sequels of head trauma with detrimental effects on outcome. These problems have already been well studied in adults, but not in children. The noninvasiveness and ease in use of transcranial Doppler ultrasound technique (TCD) make it an ideal tool for the assessment of changes in cerebral circulation not only for the purposes of diagnosis but also for follow-up.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors review the present li

In 36 patients 3 month after ischaemic stroke in regions supplied by MCA (Middle Cerebral Artery) physical examination, CT scanning and blood flow velocity recordings in ICA (Internal Carotid Artery) and MCA were performed. In both MCA blood flow velocity was measured in resting state and after 30 sec. of hyperventillation. The control group consisted of 40 healthy volunteers. In the control group blood flow decrease after hyperventillation was nearly equal in both hemispheres (38% in right and 37% in the left hemisphere). In studied group in the symptomatic hemisphere blood flow reduction was

Blood flow velocity of the middle cerebral artery was monitored during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures by means of transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. Our investigation was carried out in a group of 16 patients with severe carotid stenosis or occlusion and in a control group of 42 patients with no or stenosis of less than 50% local diameter reduction. After onset of cardiopulmonary bypass, both groups showed a short unstable phase followed by increased blood flow velocity (10% increase ipsilateral to the obstruction, 27% increase in the control group). Just before rewarming, blood flow vel

Disturbance of cerebral vasomotor regulation has been shown to be associated with the severity of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The transient hyperaemic response (THR) test is a test of the pressure autoregulatory response in terms of cerebral blood flow velocity after a brief carotid artery compression. Correlating with the test of cerebral vascular reactivity (CVR) to carbon dioxide by means of passive hyperventilation suggested that the THR test is a simple clinical test for the assessment of cerebral haemodynamic status in head-injured patients.

Non-invasive Doppler ultrasonographic study of cerebral arteries (transcranial Doppler, TCD) has been extensively applied on both outpatient and inpatient settings. It is performed placing a low-frequency (≤2 MHz) transducer on the scalp of the patient over specific acoustic windows, in order to visualize the intracranial arterial vessels and to evaluate the cerebral blood flow velocity and its alteration in many different conditions. Nowadays a valid indication for TCD in the outpatient setting is the research of right-to-left shunting, responsible for the so-called "paradoxical embolism", mo

PURPOSE: International guidelines advocate intensive blood pressure (BP) lowering within 6 hours of acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) to a target systolic BP of 130-140 mm Hg, though more intensive lowering may be associated with adverse outcome. Observational studies suggest impaired cerebral autoregulation (CA) following ICH. Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD), alongside continuous BP monitoring, provides a noninvasive bedside investigation that offers detailed perspectives on physiological perturbations post-acute ICH. This systematic review and meta-analysis focuses on all TCD s
