Prenatal diagnosis of Goldenhar syndrome with unusual features by 3D ultrasonography.

Oculoauriculo-vertebral spectrum, or Goldenhar syndrome, is characterized by varying degrees of prevalently unilateral underdevelopment of craniofacial structures (orbit, ear, and mandible) and spinal anomalies. We report a patient with unusual features diagnosed prenatally by 3D ultrasonography at 21 weeks' gestation without a family history. An early diagnosis was suggested by observation of a maxillary cleft-plate, multiple vertebral segmentation defects and hypoplastic thumb. Postnatal evaluation also revealed ambiguous genitalia and club feet in addition to the prenatally and postnatally

Foetal craniopharyngioma diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography and confirmed by histopathological examination.

BACKGROUND: Craniopharyngioma is an intracranial tumour, which usually develops in children and young adults and rarely occurs in intrauterine life. METHODS: In foetal life, ultrasonography and later computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are regarded to be the most effective tools of diagnosis. RESULTS: In the seven cases published earlier, tumour size was below our finding of 96 x 80 x 65 mm(3). In relation to the current case report, we aimed at surveying the available information on prenatal craniopharyngioma. CONCLUSION: Although the tumour is benign, the neurolo

Prenatal diagnosis of succenturiate lobe by ultrasonography and color Doppler imaging.

At 16 weeks' gestation, ultrasonography demonstrated a band-like structure in the amniotic cavity of a 27-year-old woman. Color Doppler imaging revealed blood flow in this band-like structure and a diagnosis of a placenta with succenturiate lobe rather than an amniotic band was made.

[Diagnostic prenatal ultrasonography of malformations of the fetal anterior abdominal wall].

Abdominal wall defects include a broad spectrum of structural malformations with variable severity and prognosis. The purpose of prenatal ultrasound examination is to correctly diagnose and classify these malformations according to their localization (particularly their relation to the umbilical cord insertion), their contents, their size and associated malformations or karyotypic abnormalities. Based on this examination, two groups can be distinguished: gastroschisis or omphalocele (when the latter is isolated, in particular without karyotypic abnormalities) which can be surgically corrected

Integration of genetics and ultrasonography in prenatal diagnosis: just looking is not enough.

OBJECTIVE: There has been a gradual shift of the focus of prenatal diagnosis from genetics to ultrasonography. We assessed our primary genetics approach to determine what would be missed without the genetics component. STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated referral indications for patients with normal and abnormal prenatal findings from Jan. 1, 1990, to March 31, 1995, and categorized them according to type of fetal anomalies and genetic abnormalities found. Discordance among initial indication, identified risk factors, and observed abnormalities was assessed. RESULTS: The proportion of patients referr

[Sensitivity of obstetrical ultrasonography in the prenatal diagnosis of major fetal anomalies].

With the aim of evaluating the sensitivity of obstetrical ultrasonography for prenatal screening of major birth defects, a retrospective study was conducted on 164 pregnancies which ended in the birth of an affected baby. The 164 cases had been reported to the Birth Defects Monitoring System of the Bouches du Rhône area by 5 maternity Hospitals between January 1, 1985 and December 31, 1987. Among these 164 cases, 50 were live births, 19 died after birth, 21 were stillbirths and 74 were terminations of pregnancy after prenatal diagnosis. Data from ultrasound reports were cross-checked with data

Fetal Sex Results of Noninvasive Prenatal Testing and Differences With Ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the causes of reported discordance between noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and ultrasound or other clinical information. METHODS: In this retrospective, observational study, all cases in which single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based NIPT reported normal sex chromosomes and the laboratory was notified by the patient or health care provider of discordance between NIPT and observed or expected fetal sex from clinical information were reviewed. When discordances were unresolved after internal and external laboratory clerical data review or repeat ultrasound imaging, ad

Prenatal diagnosis of hypospadias with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional ultrasonography.

To compare the prenatal diagnostic performance as well as appearance of ultrasonic details between 2-dimensional ultrasonography (2DUS) combined with 3-dimensional ultrasonography (3DUS) and 2DUS alone for hypospadias. A total of 47 fetuses were enrolled and examined by 2DUS and then 3DUS. Postnatal follow-up data were obtained and 28 cases were confirmed of hypospadias. Although not statistically significant, there was a trend toward higher AUC (0.85 vs. 0.76; p = 0.08), ACC (85.1 vs. 76.6%; p = 0.22), SEN (85.7 vs. 78.6%; p = 0.63), and SPE (84.2 vs. 73.7%; p = 0.50) for 2DUS combined with 3

Prenatal diagnosis of penoscrotal transposition with 2- and 3-dimensional ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the prenatal diagnostic accuracy of 2-dimensional ultrasonography (2DUS) alone versus 2DUS in combination with 3-dimensional ultrasonography (3DUS) for penoscrotal transposition. METHODS: Fetuses suspected of having penoscrotal transposition on the basis of ultrasonographic findings or a family history were examined by 2DUS and then 3DUS. RESULTS: Of a total of 22 fetuses, 14 had penoscrotal transposition at birth. The combination of 2DUS and 3DUS correctly identified more of the penoscrotal transposition cases than 2DUS alone (90.9% ver

Evaluation of prenatal-onset osteochondrodysplasias by ultrasonography: a retrospective and prospective analysis.

The osteochondrodysplasias or skeletal dysplasias are a heterogenous group of over 350 distinct disorders of skeletogenesis. Many manifest in the prenatal period, making them amenable to ultrasound prenatal diagnosis. A retrospective analysis evaluated 1,500 cases referred to the International Skeletal Dysplasia Registry (ISDR) to determine the relative frequency of specific osteochondrodysplasias and correlation of ultrasound versus radiographic diagnoses for these disorders. Within the retrospective cohort of 1,500 cases, 85% of the referred cases represented well-defined skeletal dysplasias

Prenatal ultrasonography and early surgery for congenital cystic disease of the lung.

With the recent advent of prenatal ultrasound as a routine screening procedure, diagnosis of congenital cystic lung disease has been made in utero, raising the possibility of elective surgery for these lesions early in infancy before the patient develops respiratory distress or potentially life-threatening infection. From 1979 to 1989 six cases of congenital lung cyst were diagnosed in utero by prenatal ultrasound and followed during pregnancy. Two of the six were not confirmed after birth because the mothers preferred an abortion. The remaining four cases were studied periodically during gest

Prenatal diagnosis of a craniopharyngioma using ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging.

We report an infant with a craniopharyngioma which was detected in utero. Maternal uterine ultrasonography, done at 27 weeks because of polyhydramnios, revealed a 4 cm midline mass near the base of the fetal skull. At 31 weeks, magnetic resonance imaging of the maternal abdomen confirmed the presence of a mass in the region of the third ventricle and revealed hydrocephalus. Two days post-partum a computed tomography (CT)-guided needle biopsy of the mass was performed and recovered tissue which was histologically consistent with a craniopharyngioma. The infant's postnatal period was complicated

Differentiation of cystic biliary atresia and choledochal cysts using prenatal ultrasonography.

PURPOSE: This study explored the performance of prenatal ultrasonography in the differential diagnosis of cystic biliary atresia (CBA) and choledochal cyst (CC). METHODS: Fetuses diagnosed with hepatic hilar cyst in the second trimester were included in this study. A series of prenatal ultrasound examinations were performed in the second and third trimesters. The diameter of the gallbladder (GB) and hepatic cyst were measured, as well as the wall thickness of the GB. The GB-cyst connection, visibility of the right hepatic artery (RHA), and other concomitant abnormalities were carefully evalua

Prenatal diagnosis of Holt-Oram syndrome: role of 3-D ultrasonography.

Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS) is an autosomal dominant disorder consisting of a congenital heart defect in combination with upper limb abnormalities. This report presents the ultrasonographic follow-up of a fetus at risk for this syndrome. An abnormal four-chamber view of the heart and slight shortening of the forearm were found by prenatal ultrasound performed at 16 weeks of gestation. At 25 weeks of gestation, detailed sonographic examination clearly revealed abnormalities in the upper limbs and heart of the fetus. At 39 weeks of gestation, spontaneous labor and delivery produced a female infant
