Enhancing prevalence estimation by addressing inconsistent reporting: insights from a cross-national, data-adjusted replication study.

AIMS: Evidence on adolescent alcohol use in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is scarce and, like research in high-income countries, generally overlooks inconsistent reporting. Based on a data-adjusted replication of a study in 57 LMICs, this work assessed the effect of inconsistent reporting on prevalence estimates. METHODS: To standardize the operationalization of inconsistent reporting, I examined the 37 datasets that contained the exact same set of items. Inconsistencies were identified based on logical contradictions. Prevalence estimates of past 30-day alcohol use and sources of

Longitudinal Impact of Life Events on Adolescent Binge Drinking in the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA).

Background: Life events experienced during adolescence are associated with risk and resilience to heavy episodic drinking (HED; i.e. binge drinking). The current study builds on prior research using latent class analysis (LCA) to examine heterogeneity in patterns of adolescent life events at baseline to HED over the course of three years (4 timepoints) as part of the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA). Methods: Life event classes were modeled using LCA that characterized NCANDA participants based upon their responses to the Life Events Questionnaire (N

A quasi-experimental evaluation of partnerships for success's impact on community-level ethanol and prescription drug poisoning rates.

The emerging dual threats of underaged drinking (UAD) and prescription drug misuse (PDM) require sustained prevention efforts across multiple levels of interventions. In response to the continuing proliferation of UAD and PDM among youth and young adults, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) developed the Partnerships for Success (PFS) program. Across five cohorts funded from 2012 to 2016, PFS created linkages between health care providers, treatment and prevention services providers, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations for the delivery of multipl

Adolescent alcohol consumption predicted by differences in electrophysiological functional connectivity and neuroanatomy.

Alcohol consumption during adolescence has been associated with neuroanatomical abnormalities and the appearance of future disorders. However, the latest advances in this field point to the existence of risk profiles which may lead to some individuals into an early consumption. To date, some studies have established predictive models of consumption based on sociodemographic, behavioral, and anatomical-functional variables using MRI. However, the neuroimaging variables employed are usually restricted to local and hemodynamic phenomena. Given the potential of connectome approaches, and the high

A laboratory-based test of the relation between adolescent alcohol use and panic-relevant responding.

A burgeoning literature supports a link between alcohol use and panic-spectrum problems (e.g., panic attacks, disorder) among adolescents, but the direction of influence has yet to be properly examined. From a theoretical perspective, panic-spectrum problems may increase risk for problematic drinking via affect regulation efforts (e.g., self-medication), and problematic consumption also may increase or initiate panic-relevant responding (e.g., learning or kindling models). The objective of the current investigation was to examine the role of prior alcohol use in predicting panic-relevant respo

Ethnic variation in drinking, drug use, and sexual behavior among adolescents in Hawaii.

This study examined ethnic differences in substance use and sexual behavior and whether drinking and drug use constitute risk factors for unsafe sexual practices among Native Hawaiian (NH), Caucasian, and Asian/Pacific Islander (API) high school students in Hawaii. A secondary data analysis of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (1997 and 1999) using a representative sample of 2,657 students in 9-12 grades was performed. Chi-square tests for bivariate associations and multivariate regression analyses were conducted to identify predictors. NHs were more sexually active, initiated sex earlier, and te

Associations between alcohol-related parenting factors and youth alcohol expectancies: considering the role of perceived friends' disapproval of alcohol use.

We investigated variations in associations of alcohol-related parenting factors with alcohol expectancies by perceived friends' disapproval of alcohol use in middle-school-aged youth (n = 7657). Perceived friend disapproval moderated the association of deciding on rules about drinking with positive expectancies. Parenting factors and friend disapproval were independently associated with negative expectancies.

Brain Networks and Adolescent Alcohol Use.

IMPORTANCE: Alcohol misuse in adolescence is a leading cause of disability and mortality in youth and is associated with higher risk for alcohol use disorder. Brain mechanisms underlying risk of alcohol misuse may inform prevention and intervention efforts. OBJECTIVE: To identify neuromarkers of alcohol misuse using a data-driven approach, with specific consideration of neurodevelopmental sex differences. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Longitudinal multisite functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data collected at ages 14 and 19 years were used to assess whole-brain patterns of fun

The social context of drinking and its association with days of heavy episodic drinking in the past month among a nationally representative sample of adolescents and young adults in the United States, 2021-23.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research links solitary drinking under the age of 21 years, the legal drinking age in the USA, with adverse health later in life. This study examines associations between the social context of drinking (i.e. drinking alone vs with others) and the frequency of heavy episodic drinking (HED) days in the past 30 days among 12-20-year-olds in the USA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We aggregated National Survey on Drug Use and Health data from 2021 to 2023 for all individuals aged 12-20 years who drank alcohol in the past month (unweighted n = 6 261). The focal independent variable of

Sources of alcohol and associations with drinking frequency and binge drinking among a large sample of adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Underage drinking remains a major public health concern worldwide, contributing to a wide range of health and social harms. While adolescent alcohol use has been widely studied, there is limited evidence on how adolescents obtain alcohol and how these sources relate to drinking behaviours. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used data from 8,507 Grades 9-12 students participating in the 2022-2023 COMPASS study across 66 schools in Canada. Analyses were restricted to students who reported alcohol use in the past 12 months. Proportional odds mixed models assessed associations bet

Association between adolescent alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking with adult risk of breast cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol and smoking are established carcinogens; however, evidence on adolescent exposure during mammary development on breast cancer risk remains inconsistent. This study assessed the associations between adolescent alcohol intake, smoking, and adult breast cancer risk. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE (1966), Web of Science (1900), and Scopus (1970) from inception to September 2025 identified 31 eligible studies (eleven on alcohol, twenty on smoking). Pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using random-effects models. RESULTS

Cascades From Early Adolescent Impulsivity to Late Adolescent Antisocial Personality Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder.

PURPOSE: The behavioral disinhibition model (BDM) posits that a liability toward impulsivity evident by early adolescence underlies the coemergence of antisocial behavior and alcohol use (i.e., problem behaviors) in early-adolescence to mid-adolescence, but that the subsequent development of these problem behaviors (rather than impulsivity itself) predicts the emergence of antisocial personality disorder (APD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in late adolescence. The present study was designed to test these predictions of the BDM from early to late adolescence. METHODS: We used five-year longit

Transition from alcohol to other drugs among adolescents in Taiwan: the first drinking context matters.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the extent to which youthful alcohol consumption and the initiation of tobacco, betel nut, and other illegal drugs may differ by their first drinking context in Taiwan-a society with social norms that are more tolerant of underage drinking. METHOD: In 2004, in a nationally representative sample of 11,943 school-attending youth ages 15-18, information pertaining to sociodemographic characteristics, problem behaviors, lifetime experiences of alcohol, tobacco, betel nut, and illegal drugs, as well as psychoactive, drug-specific age of initiation, context at first u

Method of accessing alcohol and binge drinking status in youth and young adults.

AIMS: The study investigated relationships between how youth and young adults access alcohol and their binge drinking behaviors. METHODS: Data from the Rhode Island Student Survey (11- to 18-year-olds) and the Mobile Screen Time project (18- to 24-year-old) were included. Participants were asked whether they access alcohol through several different methods (e.g. gifts, purchase, theft), and a latent class analysis was conducted to identify patterns of behavior. Logistic regression models were used to determine if class assignment was associated with binge drinking, after adjusting for age, se

A network analysis of alcohol-related harms: An exploratory study in United Kingdom adolescents.

BACKGROUND: This study applied a network analysis approach to the study of individual self-reported alcohol-related harms (ARHs) across four waves of data. METHODS: Data were from a large clustered randomised control trial (N = 12,738) involving 105 schools. Data were collected at 4 time points over 4 academic years (mean age 12.5 [Time 0], 13.5 [T1], 14.5 [T2], and 15.3 years [Time 3]). Data were gathered on the experience of 16 separate ARHs experienced during the previous six months, and these were dichotomised (yes/no). We estimated cross-lagged panel networks for the 16 ARHs, capturing b
