Documentation Status and Self-Rated Physical Health Among Latinx Young Adult Immigrants: the Mediating Roles of Immigration and Healthcare Stress.

Previous research has demonstrated that undocumented Latinx immigrants in the USA report worse physical health outcomes than documented immigrants. Some studies suggest that immigration-related stress and healthcare related-stress may explain this relationship, but none have tested it empirically. The purpose of this study was to determine if immigration-related stress and healthcare-related stress in the USA explain the relationship between documentation status and physical health among Latinx immigrants in North Carolina. The conceptual model was tested utilizing baseline data from a longitu

Long-term impact of immigration status on outcomes in pediatric kidney transplant recipients.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of documentation status on pediatric kidney transplant outcomes in a single-center setting, emphasizing the significance of state insurance access for undocumented patients and federal policies like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) on patient outcomes. A cohort of 283 patients, including 48 undocumented individuals, who received their first kidney transplant as children between 1998 and 2011 was analyzed. There was no significant difference in unadjusted all-cause (P = .91) and death-censored (P = .38) graft survival between undocumented

Why we dehumanize illegal immigrants: A US mixed-methods study.

Dehumanization is a topic of significant interest for academia and society at large. Empirical studies often have people rate the evolved nature of outgroups and prior work suggests immigrants are common victims of less-than-human treatment. Despite existing work that suggests who dehumanizes particular outgroups and who is often dehumanized, the extant literature knows less about why people dehumanize outgroups such as immigrants. The current work takes up this opportunity by examining why people dehumanize immigrants said to be illegal and how measurement format affects dehumanization rating

Immigration Policy and the Health of Latina Mothers and Their Infants.

Restrictive immigration policies may adversely affect the health of Latina mothers and their infants. We hypothesized that undocumented Latina mothers and their US born children would have worse birth outcomes and healthcare utilization following the November 2016 election. We used a controlled interrupted time series to estimate the impact of the 2016 presidential election on low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth, maternal depression, well child visit attendance, cancelled visits, and emergency department (ED) visits among infants born to Latina mothers on emergency Medicaid, a proxy for undo

Navigating Intimate Partner Violence and Social Support Services: Testimonials of Latina Survivors.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has surged across the United States, with undocumented Latina immigrants from South and Central America disproportionately affected. The heightened immigration enforcement has further discouraged help-seeking, creating significant barriers to accessing formal support systems. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of 15 undocumented Latina IPV survivors in Westchester County, New York. Drawing on seven in-depth, semistructured interviews, the study examined how participants navigate support with complex social and structural constraints. Find

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and birth outcomes in California: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program provides temporary relief from deportation and work permits for previously undocumented immigrants who arrived as children. DACA faced direct threats under the Trump administration. There is select evidence of the short-term impacts of DACA on population health, including on birth outcomes, but limited understanding of the long-term impacts. METHODS: We evaluated the association between DACA program and birth outcomes using California birth certificate data (2009-2018) and a difference-in-differences approach to compare pos

Navigating Healthcare and Public Benefits in NC: Perspectives of Undocumented Latina Women with U.S.-Born Infants.

Mixed-documentation status Latino families face unique barriers to accessing healthcare and public benefits. We examined the experiences of undocumented Latina mothers in North Carolina and the role of anti-immigrant policies and rhetoric in their decisions to access care and public benefits for themselves and their U.S.-born infants. We conducted a qualitative descriptive study to explore Latina mothers' experiences seeking care for themselves and their infants during the perinatal period. We used Emergency Medicaid at delivery as a proxy to identify undocumented mothers with U.S.-born infant

"A center for trans women where they help you": Resource needs of the immigrant Latinx transgender community.

BACKGROUND: Immigrant Latinx transgender people often migrate to the United States because of a desire for increased safety and more opportunities. However, after migrating to the United States, immigrant Latinx transgender people often struggle to access basic needs, including health care, jobs, and stable finances. These struggles are exacerbated for undocumented immigrant Latinx transgender people. There is a gap in the literature regarding needed resources for immigrant Latinx transgender community members living in the United States. AIMS: Utilizing a critical intersectionality framework

Logistical and Ethical Challenges in the Provision of Kidney Care to Immigrants.

The burden of chronic kidney disease in the United States is substantial regardless of one's immigration status. However, members of minority groups, including immigrants, are disproportionately impacted and confront numerous barriers to accessing appropriate care. This article examines the barriers that hinder individuals' ability to access and impede providers' efforts to deliver care. The article concludes with an examination of the ethical issues confronting providers in carting for immigrant patients as the result of the incongruity between ethical principles underlying care and the struc

Expanded Medi-Cal Coverage and Persisting Access Barriers for Latino Immigrants in California.

In California, health and community-based organizations serve as vital intermediaries, helping Latino immigrants navigate Medi-Cal (the state's Medicaid program) enrollment and access to care. The 2024 Medi-Cal expansion extended eligibility to undocumented immigrants who meet income criteria. Despite this policy shift, persistent barriers to care remain at the individual, insurance system, and organizational levels. This study examines Latino immigrants' navigation of health insurance and access to care in California. As part of the MIRA Latino study, we interviewed leaders from 32 California

ACOG Committee Statement No. 25: Advocating for Safe and Equitable Obstetric and Gynecologic Care for Immigrants.

Immigrants face challenges in navigating complex policies that govern access to health care, shelter, food, and clean water, resulting in profound effects on health care outcomes, including increased risk of preterm births and decreased access to preventive health services. These disparities are further exacerbated when immigration policies result in mass detention, incarceration, and deportation, leading to profound trauma among undocumented immigrants and their communities. Obstetrician-gynecologists and other reproductive health care professionals should be prepared to practice immigration-

Exploring childhood immunization among undocumented migrants in Sweden - following qualitative study and the World Health Organizations Guide to Tailoring Immunization Programmes (TIP).

OBJECTIVES: National vaccination coverage in Sweden is high. Recurrent outbreaks of measles and rubella however highlight some immunity gaps in the population. Current knowledge about immunization status of undocumented migrant children is scant. The World Health Organization/Europe has developed the Guide to Tailoring Immunization Programmes (TIP) to assist countries in diagnosing barriers and motivators to vaccination in communities with low vaccination coverage. Based on the TIP guide, the objective of this study was to explore determinants to vaccination among undocumented immigrants, usin

At Europe's migration crossroads: dialysis outcomes and transplant access in patients immigrating to Belgium.

BACKGROUND: Global inequities in dialysis and kidney transplantation among immigrant populations remain poorly characterized. At the crossroads of European migration, Brussels' Brugmann University Hospital provides an opportunity to examine outcomes in one of the most ethnically diverse dialysis cohorts in Western Europe, including a substantial proportion of undocumented immigrants. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective 15-year analysis of 497 incident dialysis patients (2010-2024), categorized as Western European (WE, 32%), Eastern European (EE, 21%), North African (NA, 26%), or Sub-Saharan
