Population-Level Effect of Cholera Vaccine on Displaced Populations, South Sudan, 2014.

Following mass population displacements in South Sudan, preventive cholera vaccination campaigns were conducted in displaced persons camps before a 2014 cholera outbreak. We compare cholera transmission in vaccinated and unvaccinated areas and show vaccination likely halted transmission within vaccinated areas, illustrating the potential for oral cholera vaccine to stop cholera transmission in vulnerable populations.

Cumulative risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome among vaccinated and unvaccinated populations during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) among influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent (pH1N1) vaccinated and unvaccinated populations at the end of the 2009 pandemic. METHODS: We applied GBS surveillance data from a US population catchment area of 45 million from October 15, 2009, through May 31, 2010. GBS cases meeting Brighton Collaboration criteria were included. We calculated the incidence density ratio (IDR) among pH1N1 vaccinated and unvaccinated populations. We also estimated cumulative GBS risk using life table analysis. Additionally, we used vaccine coverage

Clinical observations on smallpox: a study of 1233 patients admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Calcutta, during 1973.

The paper presents clinical observations on 1 233 persons with smallpox who were admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Calcutta, in 1973. The disease was of the modified type in 53 patients (4.3%), the ordinary type in 717 (58.2%), the flat type in 249 (20.2%), and the haemorrhagic type in 214 (17.3%). The fatality of these types of smallpox was found to be 5.7%, 26.8%, 88.4%, and 98.1%, respectively, and the overall case fatality was 50.7%. The haemorrhagic type was found mainly among older patients and affected males more often than females. The vaccination status of 1 218 patients w

Measles Outbreak in a Child Care Facility - Lubbock, Texas, March-April 2025.

During 2025, the United States recorded the highest number of measles cases since measles elimination was declared in 2000. On March 21, 2025, Lubbock Public Health (LPH) in Texas received a report of a child care attendee aged 3 years, with fever, rash, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, otitis media, and diarrhea who received a positive test result for measles by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Six additional children who attended the same child care facility and the grandfather of one of the children were confirmed by RT-PCR testing to have measles. None of t

Comparison of outcomes in vaccinated versus unvaccinated COVID-19 kidney transplant recipients, a single center retrospective study-Is the taboo justified?

INTRODUCTION: We assessed differences in the post-transplant outcomes between COVID-19 vaccinated and unvaccinated Kidney transplant (KTx) recipients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center study of 400 KTx from 2/1/2021 to 4/30/2022 with 6-21 months follow-up. Primary outcomes included differences in the incidence of post-transplant COVID-19, ICU admission for COVID-19, death, and graft failure between the two groups. Secondary outcomes were inpatient floor admission, outpatient-management, length of hospital stay during COVID-19 admission. We also reported rejection, DGF, CMV

When measles is not benign: meningoencephalitis and status epilepticus in an unvaccinated adolescent (case report).

Measles is a highly contagious viral exanthematous disease, caused by a Morbillivirus, that continues to cause outbreaks in under-immunized populations. While neurologic complications are rare, the progression to meningoencephalitis with convulsive status epilepticus is exceptional, particularly in immunocompetent adolescents. We report a 17-year-old unvaccinated male who presented with a febrile, descending asymptomatic maculopapular rash, lacking Koplik spots, followed by rapid onset of severe headache, photophobia, vomiting, and convulsive status epilepticus. Day-7 IgM was negative, and PCR

Effectiveness of JYNNEOS vaccine against symptomatic mpox disease in adult men in Los Angeles County, August 29, 2022 to January 1, 2023.

We describe real-world estimates of JYNNEOS vaccine effectiveness (VE) against symptomatic mpox in Los Angeles County (LAC). We conducted a retrospective cohort study of men aged ≥18 years residing in LAC who were at risk for mpox and eligible for the JYNNEOS vaccine from 5/19/2022 to 1/1/2023. Case demographics and route of JYNNEOS administration were obtained through vaccine administration data systems. HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) status was obtained through disease reporting systems for HIV and STI diagnoses in LAC. To estimate VE, we calculated weekly incidence of confirme

Serogroup A, C, W, and Y meningococcal disease in persons previously vaccinated with a serogroup ACWY meningococcal vaccine - United States, 2014-2018.

BACKGROUND: The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends routine vaccination with a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate serogroup A,C,W,Y (MenACWY) vaccine at 11-12 years of age, with a booster dose at 16 years. ACIP also recommends meningococcal vaccination for persons at increased risk of meningococcal disease, including a 2-dose primary series and regular booster doses for persons at increased risk because of underlying medical conditions. U.S. cases of serogroup A, C, W, and Y meningococcal disease in persons previously vaccinated with MenACWY vaccine have not been s

Comparison of a whole-blood interferon gamma assay with tuberculin skin testing for detecting latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

CONTEXT: Identifying persons with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is crucial to the goal of TB elimination. A whole-blood interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) assay, the QuantiFERON-TB test, is a promising in vitro diagnostic test for LTBI that has potential advantages over the tuberculin skin test (TST). OBJECTIVES: To compare the IFN-gamma assay with the TST and to identify factors associated with discordance between the tests. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective comparison study conducted at 5 university-affiliated sites in the United States between March 1, 1998 and June 30, 1999. PARTICIPANTS

Increase in Measles Cases - United States, January 1-April 26, 2019.

As of April 26, 2019, CDC had reported 704 cases of measles in the United States since the beginning of 2019, representing the largest number of cases reported in the country in a single year since 1994, when 963 cases occurred, and since measles was declared eliminated* in 2000 (1,2). Measles is a highly contagious, acute viral illness characterized by fever and a maculopapular rash; complications include pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. Among the 704 cases, 503 (71%) were in unvaccinated persons and 689 (98%) occurred in U.S. residents. Overall, 66 (9%) patients were hospitalized. Thirtee

Measles Outbreak Associated with an Infectious Traveler - Colorado, May-June 2025.

Measles is a highly contagious vaccine-preventable viral disease. Successful vaccination programs resulted in limited measles transmission in the United States in 2000, but U.S. cases have been increasing since early 2025. On May 20, 2025, CDC notified the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment of a measles case in an unvaccinated, non-Colorado resident who had arrived in Denver, Colorado, on an international flight and traveled through the Denver International Airport while infectious. The patient acquired measles in the United States before travelling internationally. Nine seco

Interpretability and robustness of sieve analysis models for assessing HIV strain variations in vaccine efficacy.

From data on HIV-1 characteristics measured on viruses isolated from vaccinated and unvaccinated persons infected while enrolled in preventive HIV-1 vaccine trials, interpretable inferences into strain variations of vaccine efficacy can be made with recently developed sieve analysis models. Four assumptions are needed for the parameters in these models to have meaningful interpretations in terms of vaccine-induced reductions in strain-specific per-contact transmission probabilities: (A1) vaccination impacts each strain-specific transmission probability homogeneously in vaccinated persons (leak

A pneumococcal conjugate vaccination programme reduced clinically suspected invasive disease in unvaccinated children.

AIM: The 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine was introduced to the Finnish national vaccination programme for children born since June 2010. We evaluated the changes in the rates of clinically suspected invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in unvaccinated children to estimate the indirect herd protection impact of the programme. METHODS: The target cohort for this ecological before and after comparison were unvaccinated children born from January 2008 to May 2010 and ineligible for the vaccination programme, who were followed up from 2011 to 2014. The reference cohort was age and season-m

Preventive Effectiveness of Recombinant Zoster Vaccine in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Treated with Janus Kinase Inhibitors.

Objective This study assessed the effectiveness of the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) in preventing herpes zoster (HZ) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients treated with Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. Methods This was a retrospective analysis. The patients were categorized into vaccinated (n=74) and unvaccinated (n=120) groups. HZ incidence was compared using the Kaplan-Meier method, and vaccine effectiveness was estimated using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) to adjust for baseline confounding factors. Patients 194 Japanese RA patients were analyzed treated with JAK inhibi

Severe COVID-19, vaccination, and mortality among individuals with asthma: A Nationwide population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) often results in worse outcomes, including mortality, in individuals with asthma compared to those without the lung disease. However, it remains uncertain whether COVID-19 vaccination improves long-term mortality in individuals with asthma. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance System database, individuals with asthma were classified into four groups based on COVID-19 vaccination and COVID-19 infection status: vaccinated/uninfected, vaccinated/infected, unvaccinated/uninfected, and unvaccinated/infected individuals. After 1:

Vaccine Efficacy Against Naturally Asymptomatic Infections: A Novel Estimand for Quantifying Vaccine Effects.

The naive approach to estimating the effects of a vaccine on asymptomatic infections, which compares the risk of asymptomatic infection among vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, can be misleading because it comprises two effects: the vaccine preventing asymptomatic infections and the vaccine converting symptomatic to asymptomatic infections. When the latter effect is strong, vaccines can appear harmful with respect to asymptomatic infections. Using a causal principal stratification framework, we formalize an estimand, vaccine efficacy against naturally asymptomatic infection (VE NAI ), th

Measles Hospitalizations in Utah, 2025-2026.

AbstractThe ongoing 2025-2026 outbreak of measles in Utah is the state's largest in 40 years. To characterize the epidemiology and clinical features of hospitalized patients, we conducted a chart review of patients admitted to Utah hospitals between June 20, 2025, and April 14, 2026. Of the 602 measles cases reported during that period, we identified 49 patients (8%) who were hospitalized. Most hospitalized patients (44, 90%) were unvaccinated. The most common reasons for hospitalization were dehydration and hypoxemia. These findings highlight the preventable health care burden associated with

Spotlight on measles 2010: An ongoing outbreak of measles in an unvaccinated population in Granada,Spain, October to November 2010: an ongoing outbreak of measles in an unvaccinated population in Granada, Spain, October to November 2010.

In September and October 2010, 13 primary measles cases were identified among unvaccinated persons aged between 9 and 32 years (median: 16.5) in 11 districts in Germany. All cases had attended meetings in Taizé, France. This outbreak illustrates the risk of long distance spread of infectious diseases associated with international mass gatherings, and underlines the importance of closing immunisation gaps against measles by vaccinating non-immune adolescents and young adults.

Human papillomavirus vaccinations' association to childbirth rates.

Prophylactic HPV vaccines are effective against cervical cancer and its precursors, but data on their impact on fertility and pregnancy are limited. This registry-based study examined the association between HPV vaccination and childbirth rates. Study population comprised 6200 HPV- and 1667 hepatitis B-virus (HBV) vaccinated women born in 1992-1993 and an age- and community-aligned cohort of 19,473 unvaccinated women born in 1990-1991. Nearly half of the HPV-vaccinated women participated in a cervical screening trial between ages 22 and 28. Childbirth numbers and rates per 10,000 person-years
