Urbanization as a facilitator of gene flow in a human health pest.

Urban fragmentation can reduce gene flow that isolates populations, reduces genetic diversity and increases population differentiation, all of which have negative conservation implications. Alternatively, gene flow may actually be increased among urban areas consistent with an urban facilitation model. In fact, urban adapter pests are able to thrive in the urban environment and may be experiencing human-mediated transport. Here, we used social network theory with a population genetic approach to investigate the impact of urbanization on genetic connectivity in the Western black widow spider, a

Use of traditional and orthodox health services in urban Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Health care in Zimbabwe is provided by both orthodox and traditional care providers. With formal medical services under economic strain it is important to understand the extent of consulting with traditional care providers and their effectiveness. METHODS: A cross-sectional community survey recorded consultations and self-treatment for episodes of illness among 1251 individuals in 222 households randomly selected in two high-density suburbs of Harare, Zimbabwe. Three dependent variables (illness experience, consultation behaviour and choice of care provider) were analysed against

Prevention of neural tube defects in an urban health district.

An evaluation of voluntary prenatal screening for neural tube defects with serum alphafetoprotein (s-AFP) is presented. During a three year period, there were 52 fetuses with neural lesions. Of 46 mothers who bore a fetus with an open neural lesion, 25 were detected, of whom 23 agreed to the termination of their pregnancies. An unscreened group of 2331 mothers (17% of all deliveries) produced 14 fetuses with neural tube defects, an incidence of 6.0 per 1000, 1.8 times the incidence (3.3 per 1000) in the screened group. Pitfalls occurring in the assessment of hyper-alphafetoproteinemia included

Heart disease and urban heat exposure in South Asian urban populations: Socioeconomic disparities and health policy prospective.

BACKGROUND: In South Asia, climate change caused rising urban heat, and rapid urbanisation has become a major public health concern, particularly for cardiovascular health. However, socioeconomic factors (including income, education, and housing quality) have not been comprehensively included in any of the previous studies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between prolonged heat extended exposure and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1300 adults aged ≥ 19 years, recruited from different urban centers. Data was

Bovine leptospirosis in urban and peri-urban dairy farming in low-income countries: a "One Health" issue?

Global trends in urbanization are increasing the spread of neglected zoonotic infections such as leptospirosis, and reducing the number of human cases of leptospirosis is best accomplished by controlling the infection in the animal reservoir. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo and L. interrogans serovar Hardjo (L. Hardjo) exposure and to assess the associated risk factors for infection in small-scale dairy farming in the urban and peri-urban area of Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The true individual seroprevalence among the dairy cows w

When there is no communication between urban planners and public health operators: urban Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in humans.

At the international level, it is necessary to apply urban health strategies that can integrate concrete actions to protect and promote health in urban and architectural planning. In cities, the "urban fauna" mostly consists of synanthropic birds (sparrows, starlings, swallows, martins, jackdaws, crows, hawks, gulls, pigeons) that have adapted to a continuous relationship with humans. These animals enrich the ecological network of biodiversity but also pose health problems. The most successful avian colonizers are pigeons (Columba livia), which proliferate due to the abundance of foo

Lifetime urban exposure, socioeconomic position and respiratory health among adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life exposure to urban environmental factors, including air pollution, greenness or climate-related factors, is suspected to be associated with respiratory health but evidence among adolescents is scarce. We estimated the association between early-life exposure to urban factors and respiratory health among adolescents and addressed whether the socioeconomic position (SEP) could modify these associations. METHODS: This study was based on 3731 mother-child pairs from the HELIX and Generation R cohorts with 29 exposures from 6 domains (air pollution, built environment, natura

Repeat pregnancy among urban adolescents: sociodemographic, family, and health factors.

First-time adolescent mothers are at high risk for a repeat pregnancy. The present investigation, part of an ongoing longitudinal study, examined sociodemographic, family, and health factors associated with repeat Pregnancy in a clinic sample of urban, first-time adolescent mothers (ages 13 to 17 years). They were predominantly African-American and from low-income households. Repeat pregnancy within one year and between one and two years postpartum was determined from medical records. Summary statistics, point biserial correlations, and chi-square statistics were used to analyze the data. Resu

Socio-demographic characteristics and health status of urban Thai elderly.

Socio-demographic and health status of 205 elderly aged 60-90 years who attended a special clinic for the elderly at Rajvithi Hospital were investigated. All of the subjects had no major complaints and seemed to be apparently healthy. Socio-economic situation, life-style pattern and other health related information was assessed. Nearly all of the elderly lived with their relatives. Quite a high number of the females had never attended school. Almost 60% of the elderly had no regular income. The health situation of the individuals under investigation seemed to be satisfactory. The majority did

Differences in the health, mental health and health-promoting behaviours of rural versus urban cancer survivors in Australia.

PURPOSE: People affected by cancer who live in rural Australia experience inferior survival compared to their urban counterparts. This study determines whether self-reported physical and mental health, as well as health-promoting behaviours, also differ between rural and urban Australian adults with a history of cancer. METHODS: Weighted, representative population data were collected via the South Australian Monitoring and Surveillance System between 1 January 2010 and 1 June 2015. Data for participants with a history of cancer (n = 4295) were analysed with adjustment for survey year, gender,

Sustaining health interventions in urban schools to construct educational possibilities.

School-based health and wellness initiatives have evolved from isolated efforts into comprehensive, multi-level programs designed to improve and sustain children's overall health and well-being. When focused on building knowledge and changing behavior, these interventions can positively influence the development of lifelong healthy habits in youth. While facilitators and barriers to initial implementation are well documented, less is known about the long-term sustainability of such programs after external support and funding end. This qualitative study examined how inputs, activities, and reso

Lightweight Multimodal Fusion for Urban Tree Health and Ecosystem Services.

Rapid urban expansion has heightened the demand for accurate, scalable, and real-time methods to assess tree health and the provision of ecosystem services. Urban trees are the major contributors to air-quality improvement and climate change mitigation; however, their monitoring is mostly constrained to inherently subjective and inefficient manual inspections. In order to break this barrier, we put forward a lightweight multimodal deep-learning framework that fuses RGB imagery with environmental and biometric sensor data for a combined evaluation of tree-health condition as well as the estimat

Oral Rehydration Salts, Cholera, and the Unfinished Urban Health Agenda.

Cholera has played an outsized role in the history of how cities have transformed from the victims of disease into great disease conquerors. Yet the current burden of cholera and diarrheal diseases in the fast-urbanizing areas of low-income nations shows the many ways in which the urban health agenda remains unfinished and must continue to evolve.

Association between urban environment and mental health in Brussels, Belgium.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders appear as a growing problem in urban areas. While common mental health disorders are generally linked to demographic and socioeconomic factors, little is known about the interaction with the urban environment. With growing urbanization, more and more people are exposed to environmental stressors potentially contributing to increased stress and impairing mental health. It is therefore important to identify features of the urban environment that affect the mental health of city dwellers. The aim of this study was to define associations of combined long-term ex

Health practices and vaginal microbicide acceptability among urban black women.

BACKGROUND: Intravaginal topical microbicides are being investigated for prevention of HIV transmission. Use of vaginal microbicides will constitute a new type of practice, occurring in the context of other vaginal practices related to contraception, hygiene, and self-care, which are affected by cultural norms and personal beliefs. Given the high rate of HIV infection among black women, research on practices and decision making relevant to microbicide acceptability is needed in this population. METHODS: Twenty-three black women in New York City, aged 25-64, completed in-person semistructured
