Travel health care for immigrant children visiting friends and relatives abroad: retrospective analysis of a hospital-based travel health service in a US urban underserved area.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of studies evaluating pre-travel health care for children who travel to visit friends and relatives (VFR). We evaluated travel health services provided to children VFR travelers (CVFRs) as compared with adult VFR travelers (AVFRs). CVFRs and AVFRs were also compared with children and with adults traveling as tourists (CTs and ATs, respectively), to explore relevant differences within each age group between VFRs and tourist travelers. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of all pre-travel consultations from March 2005 to July 2006 at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center

Disruptions and adaptations of an urban nutrition intervention delivering essential services for women and children during a major health system crisis in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Systematic crises may disrupt well-designed nutrition interventions. Continuing services requires understanding the intervention paths that have been disrupted and adapting as crises permit. Alive & Thrive developed an intervention to integrate nutrition services into urban antenatal care services in Dhaka, which started at the onset of COVID-19 and encountered extraordinary disruption of services. We investigated the disruptions and adaptations that occurred to continue the delivery of services for women and children and elucidated how the intervention team made those adaptations. We examined

Urban stormwater green infrastructure: Evaluating the public health service role of bioretention using microbial source tracking and bacterial community analyses.

Bioretention cells (BRCs) control stormwater flow on-site during precipitation, reducing runoff and improving water quality through chemical, physical, and biological processes. While BRCs are effective in these aspects, they provide habitats for wildlife and may face microbial hazards from fecal shedding, posing a potential threat to human health and the nearby environment. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the ability to control microbial hazards (e.g., beyond using typical indicator bacteria) through stormwater biofiltration. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to characterize

Immediate health and wellbeing benefits of short-term forest therapy for urban healthcare workers: a case study in Giant Panda National Park with cultural ecosystem services.

The increasing frequency and prominence of global public health threats put urban healthcare workers at risk of physical and mental illness. Forest therapy holds crucial importance in promoting human health as a non-material benefit obtained from ecosystems. Cultural ecosystem services (CES) profoundly influence human welfare. National parks, due to their rich biodiversity and other favorable conditions, can support forest therapy and provide CES. This study organized 32 urban healthcare workers to participate in a two-day, two-night forest therapy in the Giant Panda National Park (GPNP), whic

Urban gentrification and declining access to HIV/STI, sexual health, and outreach services amongst women sex workers between 2010-2014: Results of a community-based longitudinal cohort.

Despite increasing gentrification across North American cities, little is known about impacts on work and living environments and health access for marginalized women. Drawing upon prospective cohort and external spatial data, we examined changes in land use and sex workers' work/living environments in relation to gentrification exposure in Metro Vancouver (2010-2014), and modeled independent effects of gentrification exposure on reduced utilization of HIV/STI testing, sexual health, and sex worker support services. These decreases occurred despite efforts to scale-up HIV services for marginal

Mismatch between urban eco-sanitation improvement and health service supply capacity: evidence from Chinese city panel data and interpretable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Health service supply capacity depends not only on medical resource stocks but also on urban eco-sanitation conditions and resource-allocation mechanisms. Existing studies focus mainly on environmental exposure and health outcomes, with limited attention to whether eco-sanitation improvements can be converted into health service supply capacity. METHODS: This study constructed a panel of Chinese prefecture-level and above cities for 2002-2024, using the health service supply capacity index as the dependent variable and the eco-sanitation environment index as the core explanatory v

Hidden cities, hidden gaps: measuring facility readiness for maternal and newborn health services and its association with person-centred maternity care in sub-Saharan Africa's urban informal settlements.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, maternal and newborn deaths remain disproportionately higher among low-income populations, and they are associated with delivery in poorly equipped facilities and a shortage of staff to manage birth complications. We measured facility readiness to provide essential maternal and newborn health services and its association with women's experience of person-centred maternity care (PCMC), and we compared facilities serving and not serving informal settlements in Nairobi, Lusaka and Ouagadougou cities. METHODS: We conducted a health facility assessment in public
