Comparing incidence of vasculitis between farming, rural and urban population: A population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Vasculitis often poses a significant burden on individuals, their families and the health care system. Understanding its epidemiology can aid in facilitating timely interventions. We present a province-wide population study comparing the 1) incidence of vasculitis amongst farmers, rural-non farmers and urban residents, 2) the use of health services and 3) all-cause mortality rates across the three cohorts. METHODS: The groups were randomly selected on the basis of provincial health data. Criteria for ascertaining vasculitis cases included either one hospital admission, two physicia

Is climate change affecting mental health of urban populations?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this article, we outline an up-to-date overview of the climate change impact on mental health of urban population, conducted by searching the PubMed database for relevant studies published in the past 12-18 months, in English. RECENT FINDINGS: Climate change is part of a larger systemic ecological problem in which human demands are exceeding the regenerative capacity of the biosphere. We are witnessing a 'climate chaos', a phase of instability and transformation, which is leading humans into a psychological condition of 'systemic insecurity' and a shared feeling of uncer

Assessment of Bronchiectasis in HIV Patients among an Urban Population.

Bronchiectasis is characterized by permanent destruction of the airways that presents with productive cough, as well as bronchial wall thickening and luminal dilatation on computed tomographic (CT) scan of the chest; it is associated with high mortality. Accumulating data suggests higher rates of bronchiectasis among the HIV-positive population. This case series involves 14 patients with bronchiectasis and HIV followed at two major urban institutions from 1999 to 2018. Demographics, clinical presentation, microbiology, radiographic imaging, and outcomes were collected and compiled. Mean age wa

Imaging prevalence of nasal septal perforation in an urban population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of nasal septal perforation (NSP) on CT imaging in an urban hospital setting. METHODS: Facial bone CT scans from 3708 consecutive patients were reviewed for the presence of NSP. Size of the perforation was measured in two dimensions. Medical records were reviewed for possible risk factors. RESULTS: The prevalence of NSP was 2.05%. The most common risk factor was a history of drug abuse. Cocaine was the most prevalent drug used. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of NSP was more than double of that previously published, likely related to intranasal drug use in

Knowledge of stroke among an urban population in Cotonou (Benin).

BACKGROUND: Studies on the knowledge of stroke, its related risk factors and warning symptoms in the populations of Sub-Saharan Africa are scarce. No study has been performed in Benin until now. METHODS: A door-to-door survey was performed in two districts of Cotonou with a broad socioeconomic range. 15,155 individuals aged ≥15 years were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire adapted from previous reports. RESULTS: 15,155 individuals consented to participate in the survey. 14.1% correctly identified the brain as the affected organ in stroke. The most commonly identified risk fact

Dietary patterns and gastric cancer in a Portuguese urban population.

Dietary patterns analysis is a powerful technique to study the relations between diet and cancer. We aimed to quantify the association between dietary patterns and gastric cancer, by location and histological type, according to Helicobacter pylori infection status. We analyzed 591 incident cases of gastric adenocarcinoma and 1,463 community controls. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Principal components and cluster analyses were used to define dietary patterns. Anti-H. pylori IgG was assessed by ELISA. Age-, gender-, education- and total energy intake

Sensitization to non-pyroglyphid mites in urban population of Croatia.

AIM: Determination of prevalence of sensitization to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae (pyroglyphid mites), Lepidoglyphus destructor, and Tyrophagus putrescentiae (non-pyroglyphid mites) in urban continental Croatia. METHODS: Specific IgE (sIgE) and skin prick test (SPT) for D. pteronyssinus, D. farinae, L. destructor, and T. putrescentiae were performed in 67 men. SPT was performed with Epipharm-ALK allergens. A urtica (D+d)/2 of 3 mm or greater was considered a positive skin reaction. SIgE was measured by immunoCAP technology (UNI CAP). Values <0.35 kUA/L were conside

Violence in an urban community: a population-based interview study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to estimate the proportion of an unselected population in an urban community (Bergen, Norway) that was exposed to physical violence during the preceding year, and to determine the proportion seeking medical treatment and pressing legal charges. METHOD: A structured telephone interview was performed as part of monthly opinion polls. RESULTS: During a one-year period in 1997/1998, 3,005 residents of Bergen were interviewed. Of these, 41 (1.4%) had been exposed to physical violence during the preceding year; 10 (24%) of them had sought medical treatment, and 16 (39%

Expressed emotion and schizophrenia in Italy. A study of an urban population.

Forty-two schizophrenic patients and their close relatives took part in an Italian replication study of expressed emotion (EE). The patients were selected from the psychiatric ward of a general hospital in Milan and were subsequently followed up for nine months. All patients attended a community service clinic as out-patients, and all but one were prescribed neuroleptics for the duration of the study. Relatives were assigned to the high-EE group if they scored 4 or 5 on the emotional overinvolvement (EOI) scale, or showed hostility, or made six or more critical comments. On this basis, 18 (42%

Postoperative Recurrent Cholesteatoma in Rural Versus Urban Populations.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic ear disease presents a unique challenge to otolaryngologists in both rural and urban settings. Cholesteatoma remains a difficult disease to treat in rural populations due to limited healthcare access and high risk of recurrence. The purpose of this study was to determine if there are differences in surgical outcomes among patients with acquired cholesteatoma residing in rural versus urban settings. STUDY DESIGN: Single-surgeon retrospective case series with chart review. SETTING: Tertiary care private otolaryngology practice. PATIENTS: One hundred twenty-two patients pres

Suicidal risks in rural versus urban populations in Sardinia.

OBJECTIVE: Rural locations have been associated with suicidal risk; low population density may be a relevant factor. Accordingly, we investigated hypothesized associations between suicidal ideation and behavior with selected geographic and population-related measures and other factors. METHODS: Consenting adult patients at a mood disorder center in Cagliari, Sardinia, were assessed for the presence of suicidal ideation and acts and their association with selected demographic and clinical factors as well as indicators of urbanicity and rurality, including distance from the region's main metrop

Population seroprevalence of celiac disease in urban areas of Peru.

The objective of the study was to determine the seroprevalence of celiac disease (CD) in urban areas of Peru using a population-based sample. A random sample of women and men 18 to 29 years old from 26 cities in Peru was screened. An anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA kit was used for the detection of CD. Results higher than 20 AU / ml were considered positive. The weighted prevalence of celiac disease was 1.2% (CI 95%: 0.0% - 2.4%), thus the estimated number of people living with CD in Peru was 341,783. CD prevalence in Peru is similar to the world average.

Epidemiology of glenohumeral dislocation and subsequent instability in an urban population.

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral dislocation is the most commonly encountered adult joint instability. The epidemiology in the United Kingdom and worldwide is unclear and often limited to young, active groups that are not representative of general populations. Information regarding epidemiology and outcome from a first dislocation is useful for trauma service planning and patient counseling. We calculated the incidence of shoulder instability after a first dislocation in our urban population and investigated predictors of recurrent instability. METHODS: A prospectively collected trauma database was r
