Urbanization, Metabolic Rate, and Body Size Variation of a Common Urban Lizard.

AbstractHuman-induced rapid environmental change is intensifying globally. Urbanization, a major form of human-induced rapid environmental change, alters ecosystems and exposes wildlife to environmental changes, including pollution, altered ambient temperatures, changes in habitat structure, and resource shifts. These alterations can benefit particular species while imposing challenges to others, influencing their behavior, physiology, and morphology. Changes in resource availability and ambient temperature are particularly relevant for ectotherms, which are less independent of environmental c

Watershed urbanization and sanitation as predictors of microplastic contamination in stream sediments.

Urbanization represents a major land-use change with substantial impacts on stream ecosystems. Urban streams are exposed to a wide range of contaminants, including microplastics (MPs), which enter these systems primarily through wastewater and stormwater runoff. However, the effects of urbanization and sanitation coverage on MPs accumulation in subtropical streams remain poorly understood. This study examined the influence of urbanization intensity and sanitation coverage on MP accumulation in sediments from 16 urban streams across five cities in Uruguay, representing a gradient of urbanizatio

Distinct trajectories of urbanization shape the human gut microbiome across South Asia.

Human gut microbiomes respond to lifestyle transitions, yet the extent to which these responses are conserved across spatio-cultural contexts remains undercharacterized. We present the South Asian MicroBiome ARray (SAMBAR), a population-scale 16S gut microbiome study of 575 adults from ten geographically and socio-culturally diverse South Asian communities. Each community was sampled in ancestral villages and urban centers, enabling controlled comparisons of geography and lifestyle. Relative to global cohorts, SAMBAR microbiomes occupy a distinct compositional space with stronger correlation t

Lifestyle in flux: urbanization, dietary shifts, and endocrine health in emerging adulthood.

Emerging evidence highlights the decline of testosterone levels among young males, linked to modern lifestyle shifts rather than aging alone. This exploratory cross-sectional study investigates the interplay between modifiable lifestyle factors and testosterone levels in 50 males aged 18-22 years, focusing on underrepresented variables such as exercise type, carbonated beverage intake, and sunlight exposure. Serum testosterone levels were measured via chemiluminescent immunoassay, and lifestyle data were collected through previously validated questionnaires. Multiple regression analyses reveal

Limited Cranial Shifts in City-Dwelling Rodents after a Century of Urbanization.

Urbanization and climate change can have unexpected effects on organisms that share space with humans. Examining these effects is important for understanding how wildlife have so far adapted to human modifications on the environment, and can aid in mitigating damage to the well-being of local populations going forward. Properly documenting these effects requires samples covering long, evolutionarily relevant time spans. Most studies are not designed to span more than a few years, but natural history collections provide ready-made long-term samples, accumulated through the continuing efforts of

Suicide Risk in U.S. Adults: Alcohol Misuse, Veteran Status, and Urbanization Comparison.

Suicide is a pressing public health concern. Identifying risk factors and understanding their interplay is vital for effective prevention and intervention. This study examined the association of alcohol misuse, veteran status, and urbanization on suicide risk among U.S. adults. Using data from the 2015-2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), a cross-sectional analysis was conducted on a representative sample of U.S. adults. To determine overall risk for suicide, adjusted odds ratios were calculated through multivariable adjusted multinomial logistic regression. The study utilized

The impact of urbanization on mood disorders: an update of recent evidence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mood disorders are highly prevalent and represent a leading cause of global disability. Urbanization holds great public health implications spanning various environmental, lifestyle behavioural, economic and social domains. Underlying risk factors for mood disorders are heterogeneous but the psychiatric literature has extended beyond individual-level risk, to account for population-level environment and social-related precursors to mental ill health. This review summarizes recent studies published since 2017 examining the impact of urbanization and associated environmental,

Urbanization as a facilitator of gene flow in a human health pest.

Urban fragmentation can reduce gene flow that isolates populations, reduces genetic diversity and increases population differentiation, all of which have negative conservation implications. Alternatively, gene flow may actually be increased among urban areas consistent with an urban facilitation model. In fact, urban adapter pests are able to thrive in the urban environment and may be experiencing human-mediated transport. Here, we used social network theory with a population genetic approach to investigate the impact of urbanization on genetic connectivity in the Western black widow spider, a

Breastfeeding Supportive Hospital Practices in the US Differ by County Urbanization Level.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding rates are lower among infants living in rural areas of the United States, yet there are limited data on whether hospital breastfeeding support differs between rural and urban areas. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe whether maternity care practices supportive of breastfeeding vary by level of urbanization. METHODS: We linked data from the 2007, 2009, and 2011 Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) surveys with Rural-Urban Continuum Codes to categorize hospital counties as metropolitan urbanized, nonmetropolitan urbanized, less urbanized, and

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) and urbanization of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.

The article discusses habits related to the vectorial competence of Lutzomyia longipalpis, along with evidence confirming the importance of this sand fly species in the epidemiological chain of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. A new epidemiological profile for visceral leishmaniasis is also postulated, associated with domestic environments and the role of Lu. longipalpis in this process, its sylvatic origin, and its capacity to adapt to a wide range of habitats. Another sand fly species, Lu. cruzi, is mentioned as a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in some municipalities in Central Brazil, ba

[Epizootiologic situation of rabies in 1997. Urbanization of sylvatic rabies in Yugoslavia].

The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia is situated on the border of a great sylvatic rabies epizootics occurring in central and eastern Europe. That is the reason why a relatively small number of rabid animals have been registered. In 1997, 124 rabid animals, mainly red foxes, were identified. In recent years red fox rabies epizootics in Yugoslavia has annually spread 15-20 km to the south. Rabies in domestic animals, especially dogs, was characterized with furious clinical forms and dog-to-dog transmission typical of urban rabies. Sylvatic rabies has been almost completely eradicated in some coun

Survival in early onset dementia: effects of urbanization and socio-economic deprivation.

We estimated survival of patients with early onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) or vascular dementia (VaD) presenting to psychiatric hospitals in Scotland (1974-1988) and related this to age, gender and socio-economic variables. Hospital records of 1794 early onset dementia patients were reviewed. We identified 451 patients with early onset AD and 384 with VaD. Survival to death was calculated from symptom onset and presentation. Small geographical areas (postcode sectors) were classified by urban/rural category and deprivation score. Five-year survival from presentation of early onset AD was 32%

Can you hear me? House sparrow auditory processing differs across an urbanization gradient.

Urbanization alters both the physical and sensory environments of habitats and has the potential to affect animal communication. While the challenges faced by signalers in urban environments are increasingly understood, far less is known about how urbanization influences the physiology or behavior of sensory receivers. Here, we examined the relationship between urbanization and auditory sensitivity of house sparrows (Passer domesticus), a human-commensal songbird that inhabits environments spanning a rural–urban gradient. We used auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to assess hearing sensitivit

Effects of urbanization on local adaptation and eco-evolutionary feedbacks in white clover.

Urbanization is causing unprecedented ecological and evolutionary change worldwide. However, empirical evidence of local adaptation to urban environments is limited. Here we conduct a reciprocal transplant experiment using white clover (Trifolium repens) originating from urban and rural populations and distributed equally into five urban common gardens and five rural common gardens. Half of the plants in each garden produced the antiherbivore chemical defence hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and the other half lacked the defence, as this trait is known to exhibit genetic clines along urbanization gradi

Urbanization of Aedes mosquito populations and evolution of arboviral disease risk in Africa.

The arboviral diseases dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever are re-merging and gaining a foothold in Africa, with a significant threat of large outbreaks in urban areas. Although their emergence is intimately linked to the primary vector Aedes aegypti, which thrives in urban environments, the risk of these diseases remains substantially heterogeneous in different geographic areas. Range expansion of invasive mosquito species Aedes albopictus, and colonization of urban habitats by sylvatic and peridomestic Aedes vectors, are likely to alter the diseases' epidemiology. We discuss how a network

Clinical, epidemiological and transmission cycle aspects of leishmaniasis urbanization in Barreiras, Bahia, Brazil.

Leishmaniasis remains one of the world's leading infectious diseases and a public health problem for Bahia and Brazil. We made a retrospective cohort study of leishmaniasis cases reported between 2007 and 2016 in the Barreiras city, an important agribusiness city whose urbanization process was recent. Leishmaniasis presented epidemiological data with similar characteristics of the disease in other regions of the Brazil, that is, with the highest prevalence of visceral leishmaniasis found in children, while cutaneous leishmaniais was found in adults. The disease presented an urban configuration

Mortality, material deprivation and urbanization: exploring the social patterns of a metropolitan area.

INTRODUCTION: Socioeconomic inequalities affecting health are of major importance in Europe. The literature enhances the role of social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic characteristics and urbanization, to achieve health equity. Yet, there is still much to know, mainly concerning the association between cause-specific mortality and several social determinants, especially in metropolitan areas. This study aims to describe the geographical pattern of cause-specific mortality in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA), at small area level (parishes), and analyses the statistical associati

Variations in avoidable mortality in relation to health care resources and urbanization level.

"Avoidable" mortality may be defined as causes of death whose occurrence is closely related to medical intervention. Areas with particular health care delivery problems can be identified through a geographical comparison of these "avoidable deaths." Mortality data for Valencia from 1982 to 1990 were examined to determine whether or not the availability of medical care resources in the area influenced the occurrence of avoidable deaths. We identified variations in mortality from avoidable causes, grouped according to the differences in levels of urbanization and health care resources, in the 53
