A review on effect and treatment of perinatal Ureaplasma urealyticum colonization/infection in neonates.

Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) is the most frequently detected in the maternal genitalia, is mainly transmitted through vertical transmission at birth to neonates, with its complex etiology and adverse effects on neonatal health. While its etiologic significance in many aspects of neonatal diseases remains unknown, recent evidence indicates that UU is a cause of low birth weight, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, neonatal meningitis, retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, and abnormal blood cell counts, and is closely related to long-term prognosis in newborns. However, the most critica

A study of the risk factors for Ureaplasma urealyticum infection and the predictive role of immunoinflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Despite increasing awareness on the prevention of Ureaplasma urealyticum (Uu) infection, the high-risk factors responsible for infection in female patients in China are yet to be determined. METHODOLOGY: The study included 3043 Chinese women. Cervical secretion samples were collected for Uu identification. RESULTS: Higher age groups (25-30, 30-35, 35-40, and >40 years) had a higher risk of Uu infection (OR = 1.46; OR = 1.51; OR = 1.71; OR = 2.49, respectively). Being literate, and use of intrauterine device (IUD), or other contraceptive methods could reduce the risk of Uu infec

Ureaplasma urealyticum infection presenting as pyelonephritis and perinephric abscess in an immunocompromised patient.

We report a case of an immunosuppressed 67-year-old woman who presented with fever of unknown origin. Further investigation revealed multiple left renal and perinephric abscesses. These were managed with percutaneous drainage and broad-spectrum antibiotics; however, no clinical improvement resulted. No organism was identifiable on standard microscopy and culture of all drain, blood and urine samples taken. Left nephrectomy with right urinary diversion was performed for sepsis management and to protect the patient's right kidney. Eventually, Ureaplasma species' RNA was detected in the patient's

Recent clinical relevance of mono-genital colonization/infection by Ureaplasma parvum.

Ureaplasma parvum is the most prevalent genital mycoplasma in women of childbearing age. There is debate around the relevance of its presence in male or female genitals for disease development and as a cofactor. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of colonization/infection by U. parvum and its possible relationship with reproductive tract infections. We retrospectively analyzed the presence of U. parvum in patients referred by specialist clinicians for suspicion of genitourinary tract infection. U. parvum was detected in 23.8% of samples, significantly more frequently i

Effects of Ureaplasma urealyticum infection on the male reproductive system in experimental rats.

To study the effects of Ureaplasma urealyticum (Uu) infection on the male reproductive system, the mechanism of infertility induced by Uu infection was investigated in experimental rats. Male Sprague-Dowley rats were infected with Uu4 (serotype 4) through repeated natural sexual intercourse for 8 weeks to establish infection. After 8 weeks, the blood samples of the animals were collected and analysed for cytokine production, and the animals were microdissected for the analysis of the reproductive system. Morphological study showed that spermatozoa exhibited curling and breaks in the rats infec

Severe Neonatal Asphyxia Associated with Ureaplasma urealyticum Infection: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) is a common microorganism that has been associated with a variety of obstetric and neonatal complications, such as infertility, stillbirth, histologic chorioamnionitis, neonatal sepsis, respiratory infections, and central nervous system infections. However, it is rare for it to cause severe neonatal asphyxia. This rarity is the focus of our case report, which aims to highlight the potential severity of UU infections in newborns. CASE REPORT A male neonate was delivered vaginally at 40+5 weeks of gestation, with a history of premature rupture of membranes

Associations of Ureaplasma urealyticum infection with male infertility and intrauterine insemination outcomes.

Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) is one of the most commonly occurring pathogens associated with genital tract infections in infertile males, but the impact of seminal UU infection in semen on intrauterine insemination (IUI) outcomes is poorly understood. We collected data from 245 infertile couples who underwent IUI at The First Affiliated Hospital of USTC (Hefei, China) between January 2021 and January 2023. The subjects were classified into two groups according to their UU infection status: the UU-positive group and the UU-negative group. We compared semen parameters, pregnancy outcomes, and neo

Infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum: is there a specific clinical and radiological course in the preterm infant?

BACKGROUND: Despite having mild early respiratory disease, many preterm babies develop chronic lung disease (CLD). Intrauterine infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum has been associated with preterm labour and CLD. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that infection with U urealyticum results in a specific clinical and radiological picture in the first 10 days of life. METHODS: Retrospective study of 60 ventilated babies < 30 weeks gestation, who had tracheal secretions tested for U urealyticum. Placental histology was reviewed by a paediatric pathologist for signs of chorioamnionitis. Chest ra

Prior immunity to Ureaplasma urealyticum protects against respiratory infection in immunosuppressed mice.

Ureaplasma species can cause systemic infections in immunocompromised hosts, including lung transplant recipients. Here, we investigated the impact of prior exposure to Ureaplasma urealyticum on the risk of U. urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum infection in mice subjected to an immunosuppression regimen similar to that administered to solid organ transplant recipients. Mice were immunized with three intramuscular injections of U. urealyticum, with control mice injected with adjuvant only. Following immunization, mice received tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and methylprednisolone, and then w

GrpE Immunization Protects Against Ureaplasma urealyticum Infection in BALB/C Mice.

Nucleotide exchange factor (GrpE), a highly conserved antigen, is rapidly expressed and upregulated when Ureaplasma urealyticum infects a host, which could act as a candidative vaccine if it can induce an anti-U. urealyticum immune reaction. Here, we evaluated the vaccine potential of recombinant GrpE protein adjuvanted by Freund's adjuvant (FA), to protect against U. urealyticum genital tract infection in a mouse model. After booster immunization in mice with FA, the GrpE can induced both humoral and cellular immune response after intramuscular injection into BALB/c mice. A strong humoral imm

Maternal administration of erythromycin fails to eradicate intrauterine ureaplasma infection in an ovine model.

Erythromycin is the standard antibiotic used for treatment of infection with Ureaplasma spp. during pregnancy; however, maternally administered erythromycin may be ineffective at eliminating intra-amniotic ureaplasma infections. We examined whether erythromycin would eradicate intra-amniotic ureaplasma infections in pregnant sheep. At Gestational Day (GD) 50 (term, GD 150), pregnant ewes received intra-amniotic injections of erythromycin-sensitive Ureaplasma parvum serovar 3 (n = 16) or 10B medium (n = 16). At GD 100, amniocentesis was performed; five fetal losses (ureaplasma group, n = 4; 10B
