Diagnosis and treatment of ureteral calculi during pregnancy with rigid ureteroscopes.

PURPOSE: There is still excessive debate as to the preferred diagnostic and therapeutic approach to urolithiasis in pregnancy. We report our experience with 15 pregnant patients with renoureteral colic marked by pain not responsive to analgesia, dilatation and fever. We focused on the usefulness of ureteroscopy with thin instruments and ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of ureteral stone and ureteral colic during pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1990 and 1993 we performed ureteroscopy and ureterolithotripsy on 15 pregnant patients 16 to 30 years old. Gestation time ranged fro

[Pulmonary edema in a pregnant woman with ureteral calculi complicated by pyelonephritis].

The author presents a case of a 36-year old pregnant woman in 31st week of pregnancy, in whom in the course of renal calculosis complicated by urinary tract infection there appeared pulmonary oedema. Immediate termination of the pregnancy by Cesarean section and applying suitable pharmacological therapy led to the regression of pulmonary oedema, controlling urinary tract infection, and after four weeks--to spontaneous urolith discharge.

[Spontaneous urinary extravasation in the retroperitoneum due to ureteral calculi obstruction].

The diagnosis and management of 12 patients with spontaneous urinary extravasation due to ureteral calculous obstruction are described. Contrary to the "frank" rupture most cases can be managed without surgical intervention. The presistence of extravasation must be the reason for tumour exclusion. The renal fibrolipomatosis was seen as the possible late result of the extravasation.

Predictive value of ureteral wall thickness (UWT) assessment on the success of internal ureteral stent insertion in cases with obstructing ureteral calculi.

To evaluate the possible role of ureteral wall thickness (UWT) assessment in the prediction of the success for stent placement in cases with obstructing ureteric stones. 227 adult patients with a single unilateral obstructing ureteral stone requiring internal ureteral stent placement were included. In addition to stone size, the ureteric wall thickness at the impacted stone site and the degree of hydronephrosis were also assigned on CT images. Patients were divided into two subgroups: Group 1: patients in whom internal ureteral stent could not be passed beyond the stone and Group 2: patients i

Use of the Deniz™ rigid stone basket for treating ureteral calculi.

OBJECTIVE: Advancements in ureteroscope and stone basket design have introduced ureteroscopy to the forefront of surgical stone management. However, different issues, such as stone migration and ureteral injury, remain a challenge among urologists. The Deniz™ rigid stone basket is a patented product (patent number: TR 2016 00421 Y) manufactured in Turkey. Herein, we report our initial experience with the Deniz™ rigid stone basket for managing urinary calculi and compare the use of this device with other methods to optimize ureteroscopic stone management. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty patients u

Ureteral stricture formation after ureteroscope treatment of impacted calculi: a prospective study.

PURPOSE: Urinary calculi is a familiar disease. A well-known complication of endourological treatment for impacted ureteral stones is the formation of ureteral strictures, which has been reported to occur in 14.2% to 24% of cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study. Ureterotripsy treatment was used on patients with impacted ureteral stones. Then, after 3 months and 6 months, the condition of these patients was assessed by means of a kidney-ureter-bladder (KUB) ultrasound. If the KUB ultrasound indicated moderate to serious hydronephrosis, the patient was further assessed by m

Definitive ureteroscopy and intracorporeal lithotripsy in treatment of ureteral calculi during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome of using semi-rigid ureteroscopy with or without intracorporeal pneumatic lithotripsy vs. temporary ureteric JJ stenting in the management of obstructing ureteric calculi in pregnant women. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective comparative study comprised 43 pregnant women with obstructing ureteric calculi. The diagnosis was based on the acute flank pain as the main symptom, microscopic haematuria, and unilateral hydronephrosis on abdominal ultrasonography (US). The patients were randomly divided into two groups; those in group 1 (22 patients) were treated

Outcomes of extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy in renal and ureteral calculi.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction in early 1980s, Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) became the accepted first line treatment modality for renal and upper ureteric stones. It is simple, safe and effective noninvasive procedure which can be performed without anaesthesia in outpatient basis. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of ESWL to achieve complete stone clearance in the patients with different sizes of renal and upper ureteric stones. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the outcome, efficacy and complications of ESWL in the treatment for renal a

Removal of ureteral calculi in two geldings via a standing flank approach.

CASE DESCRIPTION: Two geldings, aged 11 and 17 years, were examined for treatment of ureteroliths located approximately 10 cm proximal to the bladder. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Ureteral obstruction was an incidental finding in 1 horse that was referred because of urinary tract obstruction and a cystic calculus. This horse did not have clinical or laboratory evidence of renal failure, although severe hydronephrosis was evident on transabdominal ultrasonography. The second patient had a serum creatinine concentration of 6.3 mg/dL (reference range, 0.8 to 2.2 mg/dL) and mild hydronephrosis of the affec

Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy for treatment of ureteral calculi in paediatric patients.

Our objective was to determine the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in the treatment of paediatric ureteral calculous disease. We reviewed the records of 41 (23 boys, 18 girls) paediatric patients admitted to our clinic for the treatment of ureteral calculi between between 1989-2001. Patients' age varied between 4-16 years. The majority of the patients, 38 (92.7%) cases were treated initially with ESWL whereas 3 (7.3%) cases were subjected to ureterolithotomy. The mean age of the patients was found as 12.8+/-3.86 (4-16) years. Most calculi were located at either upper o

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is highly effective for ureteral calculi in children.

PURPOSE: Treatment of ureteral calculi in the pediatric population represents a unique challenge. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL*) and ureteroscopy have been advocated for the treatment of such stones. We present our experience with ESWL monotherapy for ureteral stones in children in the last decade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1989 and 1999 we treated 21 boys and 17 girls with a mean age of 8 years (range 8 months to 14 years) with ureteral stones at our institution. Records were reviewed and analyzed for presentation, metabolic and anatomical anomalies, stone size and locati
