INTRODUCTION: Broadly defined, urethral strictures are narrowing of the urethral lumen that is surrounded by corpus spongiosum, i.e., urethral meatus through the bulbar urethra. Urethral stenosis is narrowing of the posterior urethra, i.e., membranous urethra through bladder neck/prostate junction, which is not enveloped by corpus spongiosum. The disease has significant quality of life ramifications because many times younger patients are affected by this compared to many other urological diseases.
METHODS: A review of the scientific literature concerning urethral stricture, stenosis, treatme

PURPOSE: To report the etiology, presenting symptoms and outcomes of the different treatments performed in female patients with recurrent urethral stricture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients with refractory LUTS were diagnosed with a urethral stricture. The symptoms, the treatment performed and the outcomes were prospectively recorded. Sixteen patients were treated with a urethroplasty using a buccal mucosal graft (BMG) in 14 cases (54 %) and a vaginal flap in 2 (8 %). Urethral dilatation, optical urethrotomy and meatoplasty were performed in 8 (31 %), 1 (3.8 %) and 1 (3.8 %) patien

The recent International Consultation on Urological Disease (ICUD) panel 2010 confirmed that a urethral stricture is defined as a narrowing of the urethra consequent upon ischaemic spongiofibrosis, as distinct from sphincter stenoses and a urethral disruption injury. Whenever possible, an anastomotic urethroplasty should be performed because of the higher success rate as compared to augmentation urethroplasty. There is some debate currently regarding the critical stricture length at which an anastomotic procedure can be used, but clearly the extent of the spongiofibrosis and individual anatomi

BACKGROUND: Urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra due to scar tissue, which leads to obstructive voiding dysfunction with potentially serious consequences for the entire urinary tract. Its prevalence among men in industrial countries is estimated at 0.9%. It produces obstructive and irritative urinary symptoms and can ultimately impair renal function. Urethral strictures can be caused by diagnostic or therapeutic urological procedures. These procedures are being performed ever more commonly, because the population is aging; thus, urethral strictures will probably become more common

OBJECTIVE: To present a summary of the 2021 version of the European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines on management of male urethral stricture disease.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The panel performed a literature review on these topics covering a time frame between 2008 and 2018, and used predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria for the literature to be selected. Key papers beyond this time period could be included as per panel consensus. A strength rating for each recommendation was added based on a review of the available literature and after panel discussion.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Manage

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of complications related to urethral stricture and identify clinical factors associated with them.
METHODS: Of 1851 patients with a suspected diagnosis of urethral stricture referred to a single urologist from 2005 to 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical variables included complications directly related to urethral stricture at the time of patient presentation, associated signs/symptoms, patient age, stricture length, location, and etiology. Complications considered significant were acute urinary retention or difficult catheterization requiring em

OBJECTIVE: Management of distal anterior urethral stricture is a common problem faced by practicing urologists. Literature on urethral stricture mainly pertains to bulbar urethral stricture and pelvic fracture urethral distraction defect. The present article aims to review the management of the strictures of fossa navicularis and pendulous urethra.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The literature in English language was searched from the National Library of Medicine database, using the appropriate key words for the period 1985-2010. Out of 475 articles, 115 were selected for the review based on their re

Distal urethral strictures comprise meatal or glandular stenoses and occur due to trauma, iatrogenic instrumentalization, infection, skin diseases such as lichen sclerosus or idiopathically. Given that 18% of anterior strictures (bulbar, penile, or glandular) are located in the very distal part, meatal/glandular stricture disease represents a non-negligible subgroup among all urethral strictures. The prevalence within Western industrialized countries is estimated to be approximately 0.6-0.9%, which translates into a total of 250,000 men being affected in Germany. Without any therapy, there is

Strictures are commonly encountered in the urological practice. The most common aetiologies are infection, trauma and iatrogenic events. Familial occurrence of urethral stricture is exceptionally rare. We present a case in which bulbar urethral strictures developed in a father and his two sons.

Urethral stricture is a challenging surgical problem since the ancient time. Its outcome is very poor because of the high recurrence rate 40.0-50.0% whatever procedure is conducted to treat the condition. Between January 2004 to December 2007, 61 cases with urethral stricture were treated in our hospital. Management of stricture was decided according to the grading of urethral stricture. Of 61 cases, 42 (68.8%) had grade I-II, 10 (16.4%) had grade III and 9 (14.8%) had grade IV strictures. They were treated with optical internal urethrotomy (OIU), modified railroading and end to end anastomoti

Urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra due to scar tissue. It causes obstructive voiding dysfunction and can lead to long-term damage of the entire urinary tract. The probability of therapeutic success is dampened by a high rate of recurrence. Therefore, a careful taking of the patient's history and further diagnostics are crucial for finding the appropriate form of therapy. This review highlights the clinical presentation and diagnostic workup of urethral strictures.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Due to the proximity of the rhabdosphincter and cavernous nerves to the membranous urethra, reconstruction of membranous urethral stricture implies a risk of urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. To avoid these complications, endoscopic management of membranous urethral strictures is traditionally favored, and bulboprostatic anastomosis is reserved as the main classical approach for open reconstruction of recalcitrant membranous urethral stricture. The preference for the anastomotic urethroplasty among reconstructive urologists is likely influenced by the familiarit

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Urethral stricture disease is poorly understood in prostate cancer survivors who have undergone radiation or ablative treatments. We review the cause and incidence of urethral strictures (excluding bladder neck contracture) in this setting, as well as risk factors and treatment options.
RECENT FINDINGS: Stricture rates differ for various modalities of radiation therapy, with the highest rate in high-dose-rate brachytherapy. Risk factors include higher dose of radiation delivered to prostate apex, radiation delivered per treatment, and prior transurethral resection of prosta

Male urethral stricture disease is prevalent and has a substantial impact on quality of life and health-care costs. Management of urethral strictures is complex and depends on the characteristics of the stricture. Data show that there is no difference between urethral dilation and internal urethrotomy in terms of long-term outcomes; success rates range widely from 8-80%, with long-term success rates of 20-30%. For both of these procedures, the risk of recurrence is greater for men with longer strictures, penile urethral strictures, multiple strictures, presence of infection, or history of prio

Urethral strictures are very commonly encountered in urologists' day-to-day work. Many specific therapeutic and reconstructive procedures are available for treatment of the different types of urethral stricture, all of which can be recommended when the indications for each are carefully observed. This paper highlights operative concepts that allow a surgical therapy that is tailored to the localisation and length of the stricture and the severity of spongiofibrosis.

According to the author, impotence associated with traumatic urethral strictures arises rather due to operative intervention than primary trauma. Inaccurate manipulations of the surgeon may cause destruction of the bulbocavernous muscles and blood vessels reaching the penis at bulbar level. Another cause of impotence is chronic prostatitis which may follow long-term bougienage. Adequate operation allowing for anatomic and functional features of the perineum does not entail impotence.

A total of 5 patients with recurrent posterior urethral strictures underwent endoscopic placement of an expandable endourethral stent made of titanium. Patient age ranged from 17 to 66 years (mean age 42.6 years). Followup ranged from 13 to 20 months (mean 14.1 months). Of the patients 4 presently have unobstructed voiding with no incontinence. To date no side effects have been directly related to the stents and no incrustations or calculi have formed. Our preliminary study supports the use of titanium urethral stents as an alternative form of treatment for selected urethral strictures.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial urinary sphincter implantation is the standard treatment for moderate-to-severe stress urinary incontinence in men. We report a case of urethral stricture associated with an artificial urinary sphincter in a patient who underwent urethroplasty and subsequent replacement of the implant.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old man who had undergone radical retropubic prostatectomy presented to our department for stress urinary incontinence. An artificial urinary sphincter was implanted, and the incontinence resolved. Eleven years later, the patient returned because of voiding
