Abnormal calcifications in the urinary tract.

A wide variety of calcifications may develop in the urinary tract. Calculi, the most common form of urinary tract calcification, are usually radiopaque due to their calcium content, whereas cystine stones tend to be less opaque. In cortical nephrocalcinosis, calcification may be spotty or may appear as a thin rim outlining the cortex. Intracystic calcification is usually thin and peripheral and is often described as having an "eggshell" appearance. In renal masses, pure central calcification usually indicates malignancy, although malignancy may also be present with pure peripheral calcificatio

The Management of Large Bladder Calculi by Utilizing Dual-Action Percutaneous Lithotripsy via Suprapubic Tube Sheath: A Novel Technique.

Bladder calculi commonly develop in patients with poor bladder emptying or those with retained foreign bodies within the bladder, leading to irritative voiding symptoms, hematuria, and an increased likelihood of refractory urinary tract infections. While many techniques exist for the treatment of bladder calculi, including endoscopic and open-surgical approaches, our novel technique may help manage exceptionally large or difficult-to-treat bladder calculi effectively. We present three patients with symptomatic bladder calculi ranging from 1.3 cm to 6.8 cm in size who were successfully treated

Urethral calculi in children.

Sixty patients diagnosed to have urethral calculi in Diyarbakir State Hospital Department of Pediatric Surgery were evaluated retrospectively to determine factors influencing the clinical picture and treatment. All the patients were boys. Pain in the penis and retracting of the penis by the patient himself were most common symptoms. The patients with posterior urethral calculi had continuous urinary dribbling, and those with anterior urethral calculi had acute urinary retention. At the time of initial admittance, the calculi were posterior urethral in 10 cases, bulbous in 13, penile in 20, and

Evaluation of the antiurolithiatic activity of the extract of Costus spiralis Roscoe in rats.

The antiurolithiatic activity of the water extract of Costus spiralis Roscoe was tested on formation of calculi on implants of calcium oxalate crystals or zinc disc in the urinary bladder of rats. The plant is a species from the family Zingiberaceae used in Brazilian folk medicine in urinary affections and for expelling urinary stones. Implantation of the foreign body in the urinary bladder of adult rats induced formation of urinary stones and hypertrophy of the smooth musculature. Oral treatment with the extract of Costus spiralis Roscoe (0.25 and 0.5 g/kg per day) after 4 weeks surgery reduc

An overlooked complication of the clean intermittent catheters: prostate calculi.

OBJECTIVE: Although the clinical importance of prostate calculi has been understood over time, it is a urinary system disease that can cause different symptoms and can be ignored by urologists sometime. Clean intermittent catheter (CIC) is the gold standard method for bladder rehabilitation and urinary drainage in patients with neurogenic bladder. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of prostate calculi and related pathologies between patients using CIC and not using CIC. MATERIAL-METHOD: A total of 314 neurogenic bladder patients who were followed up and treated in our urology

The vesical calculus.

Bladder calculi account for 5% of urinary calculi and usually occur because of foreign bodies, obstruction, or infection. Males with prostate disease or previous prostate surgery and women who undergo anti-incontinence surgery are at higher risk for developing bladder calculi. Patients with SCI with indwelling Foley catheters are at high risk for developing stones. There appears to be a significant association between bladder calculi and the formation of malignant bladder tumors in these patients. Transplant recipients are not at increased risk for developing vesical calculi in the absence of

Initial use of Browne Pneumatic Impactor.

To determine the safety and effectiveness of the Browne Pneumatic Impactor (BPI), a new pneumatic mechanical lithotripter, in fragmenting urinary calculi. Nine patients were treated between November 1995 and March 1996. The calculi were located in the bladder and urethra in one case, the bladder alone in one case, the distal ureter in six cases, and the proximal ureter in one case. The device was used through semirigid and actively deflectable, flexible fiberoptic endoscopes. All patients were treated on an outpatient basis. Fragmentation of the urinary calculi was successful in all patients w

Recurrent bilateral renal calculi in a tetraplegic patient.

An 18-year-old male developed C-5 complete tetraplegia following a motor-cycle accident in May 1975. The neuropathic bladder was managed by an indwelling urethral catheter. He developed recurrent episodes of urinary infection with Proteus species. In September 1975, an X-ray of the abdomen revealed small calculi in both the kidneys. In July 1976, he underwent transurethral resection of the bladder neck and division of the external urethral sphincter; subsequently, he was put on a penile sheath drainage. He continued to suffer from repeated episodes of urinary tract infection with Proteus, Prov

Evaluation of patients with suspected ureteral calculi using sonography as an initial diagnostic tool: how can we improve diagnostic accuracy?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of sonography as an initial diagnostic tool in patients with suspected ureterolithiasis. METHODS: We performed a prospective study of 318 patients with suspected ureteral stones over a 14-month period. All patients underwent sonography after fasting for 8 hours and bladder filling. If no cause of the flank pain was found by sonography, computed tomography or intravenous urography was performed immediately to confirm the absence of ureteral stones. RESULTS: We found urolithiasis with sonography in 291 of 296 patients with con

Bladder lithiasis: from open surgery to lithotripsy.

Bladder calculi account for 5% of urinary calculi and usually occur because of bladder outlet obstruction, neurogenic voiding dysfunction, infection, or foreign bodies. Children remain at high risk for developing bladder lithiasis in endemic areas. Males with prostate disease or relevant surgery and women who undergo anti-incontinence surgery are at a higher risk for developing vesical lithiasis. Open surgery remains the main treatment of bladder calculus in children. In adults, the classical treatment for bladder calculi is endoscopic transurethral disintegration with mechanical cystolithotri

Jack stone in the bladder: case report of a rare entity.

BACKGROUND: Jackstone is a bladder stone that has a similar appearance to toy jacks. However review of the English language medical literature revealed only a few previous reports of jackstone calculus. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case in which a large jackstone calculus was incidentally detected during the evaluation of 67 year old male presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms. X-Ray kidney, ureter, bladder showed a large irregular shaped radio-opaque shadow in the pelvic region. He underwent cystolitholapaxy and transurethral resection of the prostate. CONCLUSION: It is important to

Clinical experience with the Swiss lithoclast master in treatment of bladder calculi.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Bladder calculi account for 5% of urinary tract calculi in the Western world, and many different treatment modalities have been presented throughout the decades. We report our clinical experience using the Swiss LithoClast® Master (SLM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The SLM is a rigid, hand-held endourologic probe including a pneumatic lithotriptor and an ultrasonic lithotriptor. Attached to the ultrasonic modality is a suction system. The two lithotriptor modalities are controlled by a footswitch and can be activated separately or simultaneously. The SLM is used via a rigid

Endoscopic treatment of multiple prostatic calculi causing urinary retention.

Although prostatic calculi are relatively common, the etiology of these stones is not clear. We report a case with multiple prostatic calculi causing urinary obstruction and a concomitant bladder stone. We treated these stones endoscopically. We found a lot of different sized stones endoscopically, some protruding into the urethra, some filling different cavities on the prostate. So these cavities suggest prostatic calculi may occur related to intraprostatic reflux in the congenital or acquired diverticulum of the prostatic tissue. In addition, the stone composition of the bladder and prostati

Integration of phylogenomics and molecular modeling reveals lineage-specific diversification of toxins in scorpions.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium urealyticum is a Gram positive, slow-growing bacterium that is a most commonly cause of encrusted cystitis. A major clinical problem is recurrent urinary tract infections with encrustation of the bladder mucosa especially for multimorbid individuals with weakened immune systems. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 75-year-old male who was admitted to the urology department with perineal and urethral pain, dysuria, and macrohematuria. His medical history included complicated benign prostatic hyperplasia, vesical and splenic calculi, chronic cystitis, recurrent com

Suprapubic catheter encasement by bladder stone.

Complications of suprapubic catheterization including acute urinary retention present often to the emergency department. Patients with chronic indwelling catheters are at increased risk of bladder calculi and recurrent infections, especially without appropriate follow up care. We describe a case of suprapubic catheter failure secondary to complete circumferential encrustation of the distal catheter tip by a bladder calculus. This case demonstrates the need for thorough evaluation of any case of catheter dysfunction and for careful consideration of bladder calculi in those patients at risk.

10-cm mature cystic teratoma of the bladder in 48-year-old female misdiagnosed as bladder calculus: Management with robotic partial cystectomy.

Cystic teratomas are a common ovarian neoplasm that are rarely found in other locations of the body, namely the sacrococcygeal region and anterior mediastinum. Localization to the urinary bladder is exceedingly rare, with only a few cases documented in the literature. Cystic teratomas are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally, but localization to the bladder can present as irritative lower urinary tract symptoms and/or mimic urinary tract calculi. We report the rare case of a mature cystic teratoma of the urinary bladder, presenting as foul-smelling urine with recurrent urinary tract inf
