Isolated fetal ascites secondary to persistent urogenital sinus.

Objective. To present a case of isolated ascites secondary due to urogenital abnormalities (urogenital sinus) without any other prenatal ultrasound marker. Method. A 36-year-old woman with prenatal isolated ascites delivered a female baby, weighing 2.285 g; ascites was drained at birth and the baby underwent several episodes of urinary retention prior to undergoing X-ray investigations. Results. A voiding cystourethrogram revealed a short urogenital sinus: a vesicostomy was performed. A vaginoscopy revealed double vagina with a large posterior vagina. A posterior sagittal anorectal pull-throug

Anomalous Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery in Three Patients with MYRF-Associated Cardiac-Urogenital Syndrome.

Cardiac-Urogenital Syndrome (CUGS) is a recently identified genetic disease characterized by urogenital, diaphragmatic, ophthalmic, and cardiac abnormalities caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in the Myelin Regulatory Factor (MYRF) gene. The complete spectrum of disease characteristics and prevalence is not yet defined. This report documents the first known cases of anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) in MYRF-associated Cardiac-Urogenital Syndrome (MYRF-CUGS).

The distal region of 11p13 and associated genetic diseases.

The distal region of human chromosome band 11p13 is believed to contain a cluster of genes involved in the development of the eye, kidney, urogenital tract, and possibly the nervous system. Genetic abnormalities of this region can lead to Wilms tumor, aniridia, urogenital abnormalities, and mental retardation (WAGR syndrome). Using 11 DNA markers covering the entire distal region of 11p13, including the WAGR region, we have carried out molecular studies on 58 patients with one or more features of this syndrome and patients with other diseases or structural cytogenetic abnormalities associated

Renal and testicular agenesis in a patient with Darier's disease.

Darier's disease is a familial disorder of the skin that has been associated with corneal, bone, pulmonary, and urogenital abnormalities. This report describes a novel urogenital anomaly, namely renal and testicular agenesis, in a patient with Darier's disease. Detailed study of the kindred demonstrated an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance for Darier's disease and also revealed the presence of autoimmune thyroiditis in several family members. Thyroid involvement ranged from isolated goiter to hypothyroidism. Tissue typing for HLA-A, B, C, and DR antigens did not reveal a specific haplo

[The prune belly syndrome].

On the basis of a specific case and of references, the problems concerning the symptoms, diagnoses and the therapy of the Prune-Belly syndrome are presented. The importance of a urodynamic check-up prior to surgical measures is underlined. Due to the many combinations of malfunctions and the lack of sexual specification, it seems preferable to consider mesenchymal dysplasia as the focal point of interest rather than the abdominal muscle defecite--uromalformation--kryptorchism--triad. In view of the high chances of infection, a conservative approach seems advisable, although the possibilities o

Cloacal and urogenital malformations in adriamycin-exposed rat fetuses.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the spectrum of cloacal and urogenital malformations in rat fetuses prenatally exposed to adriamycin, which causes abnormalities that strongly resemble the VATER association (vertebral defects, anal atresia, tracheo-oesophageal fistula with oesophageal atresia, renal defects and radial limb dysplasia) in humans, and to evaluate how closely such anomalies resemble those seen in humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Timed-pregnant rats were injected intraperitoneally with adriamycin at 6-9 days of gestation; a control group received saline only. Fetuses (35 treated and 30 cont

Developmental anomalies associated with hypospadias.

Hundred and thirty patients with hypospadias were studied between 1983 and 1990, with an aim of analysing the associated anomalies in these patients. Urogenital anomalies were observed in 30% and extra-urogenital anomalies were noted in 16%. Undescended testis was the most frequently seen anomaly, having been noted in 6.9% of 130 cases. Vesico-ureteral reflux was present in 5.4% and inguinal hernia in 3.8%. The incidence of these anomalies increased in proportion to the severity of penile deformity. The present article emphasizes the need for systemic urological and endocrinal examination, esp

A novel WT1 mutation in a 46,XY boy with congenital bilateral cryptorchidism, nystagmus and Wilms tumor.

The WT1 gene plays a crucial role in urogenital and gonadal development. Germline WT1 alterations have been described in a wide spectrum of pathological conditions, including kidney diseases, genital abnormalities and Wilms tumor (WT), frequently occurring in combination. We report on a novel WT1 nonsense mutation (c.1105C>T), introducing a premature stop codon in exon 8 (p.Q369X), in a young XY male patient who presented with bilateral cryptorchidism, nystagmus, mild proteinuria and WT, but no sign of severe nephropathy. Although the majority of congenital urogenital abnormalities are not due

Neoplastic transformation of prostatic and urogenital epithelium by the polyoma virus middle T gene.

Male transgenic mice expressing the polyomavirus middle T (PyV-MT) gene exhibited growth and developmental abnormalities in prostatic and other urogenital epithelium. Expression of PyV-MT was directed to these tissues by a novel, androgen-inducible expression vector based on the rat C3(1) gene. Epithelial growth disturbances (hyperplasia, dysplasia, and invasive carcinoma) were observed in the ventral and dorsal prostate, coagulating gland, epididymis, and vas deferens. The abnormalities were characterized by histological disorganization, nuclear pleomorphism, increased mitoses, and abnormal D

Diverse clinical manifestations and intrafamilial variability due to an inherited recurrent MYRF variant.

MYRF monoallelic variants have been described in syndromic forms characterized by cardiac-urogenital syndrome and isolated nanophthalmos with/without minor systemic manifestations. We describe a large family with a paternally inherited pathogenic variant in MYRF that manifested as congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), cardiac and urogenital abnormalities, and/or nanophthalmos with significant intrafamilial variability.

Cloacal duplication.

Cloacal duplication including the rectum, anus, and genitourinary organs is one of supernumerary development. Only two cases have been reported in the literature. A case with cloacal duplication is presented. The patient was an 8-year-old girl who has had fecal incontinence since birth. Successful surgical treatment was achieved by removing one rectum and exteriorizing the other through perineal raphe.

[Rectal agenesis with absent bladder in a female newborn (author's transl)].

This paper reports a very unusual variety of female ano-rectal agenesis without fistula associated with severe urogenital malformations. The patient died of renal failure and, at autopsy, both ureters draining dysplastic ectopic kidneys and two vaginas, either with its corresponding uterus and annexa were found opening to s single perineal orifice through a very narrow conduit. Bladder and urachus were absent and a single left umbilical artery was found. This infant had also thoracic vertebral anomalies.

Ultrasonography reveals a high prevalence of lower spinal dysraphism in children with urogenital anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Lower spinal dysraphism is frequently reported in anorectal anomaly combined with urogenital anomalies. The prevalence of the spinal dysraphism has not been comprehensively studied in children with simple urogenital anomalies. We evaluated the prevalence of the spinal dysraphism using ultrasound data of the lumbosacral area in children with urogenital anomalies. METHODS: Lumbosacral ultrasound images of 259 children who underwent urological surgery with simple urogenital anomalies were reviewed by an ultrasound-specialized radiologist. The primary outcome measures were the conus m
