Invasive Mucinous Neoplasm of the Appendix Masquerading as Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections: a Case Report.

We report on a case of a healthy male patient who was referred to Urology for recurrent persistent urinary tract infections. Investigation revealed a large intraabdominal inflammatory collection abutting the cecum and bladder suspicious for ruptured appendicitis and colovesical fistula. He was taken to the operating room for exploratory laparotomy with General Surgery and Urology and found to have a ruptured appendix secondary to mucinous appendiceal neoplasm with invasion into the cecum and the bladder wall. He then underwent systemic chemotherapy followed by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chem

[Management of endourological technics with upper urinary tract diseases except urolithiasis].

Fifteen patients with stricture of upper urinary tract and 4 patients suspected of having upper tract carcinoma were managed with endourological (percutaneous or transurethral) techniques. The strictures were treated with various dilation catheters and the optical urethrotome. Eleven cases (73.3%) were successfully treated and satisfactory urinary passage was attained. The 4 patients suspected of having upper tract neoplasms were diagnosed accurately with endoscopy, 2 patients had transitional cell carcinoma of renal pelvis and the others had benign ureteral polyps. The endourological techniqu

[Adenomatoid tumors of the testis and epididymis].

The authors report 8 adenomatoid tumors treated in the Urology Department of the Medical Academy of Warsaw by organ sparing surgery during 1985-2003. Microscopic and immuno-histochemic investigations confirmed their benign character and histiogenesis. Follow-up of 6 treated patients, over 5-15 years did not reveal recurrence of the neoplasm. Two patients were treated this year and are under medical observation.

Liposarcoma of the Spermatic Cord –A Rare Pathological Entity.

Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord is a very rare neoplasm with fewer than 200 cases recorded in world literature. This report describes a case of liposarcoma of the spermatic cord which developed after radical prostatectomy and salvage radiotherapy for prostate cancer treatment. Four years following surgical treatment of the primary neoplasm and one year following radiotherapy, the 67 –year –old patient was referred to the urology clinic for the emergence of a mass in the right hemiscrotum region. Ultrasonography revealed a homogenous isodense mass measuring 4.5 cm in diameter, while positron

Urachal carcinoma: key points for the general surgeon.

Urachal carcinoma is a rare neoplasm with the majority of cases reported in the urologic literature. Because of its presentation as an intra-abdominal mass with involvement of adjacent structures the general surgeon may be consulted early in the diagnostic evaluation. One should be aware of this entity as early recognition and appropriate surgery provides the best opportunity for long-term survival. Herein we describe a typical case, appropriate evaluation, and review of the literature.

Impact of aging on the incidence and mortality of urological cancers: 20-year projection in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, 282,421 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in Spain, and urological neoplasms (UN) were among the most frequent ones. Cancer treatment in eldery people is challenging due to fragility and comorbidities of these patients. To meet the needs of treating UN in the eldery, it is necessary to optimize healthcare resources, for which a deep analysis of cancer registries becomes mandatory. The objective of this work was to provide a detailed analysis of the incidence and mortality of UN in Spanish people over 65 years old in the last year 2020, as well as the estimates for the y

[Duodenitis Russell bodies. Review of the entity and associations beyond H. pylori].

Plasma cells known as "Mott cells" present non-secretable accumulations of immunoglobulins called "Russell bodies". Its presence is related to hematological neoplasms, but it can appear in chronic inflammatory processes. The most common occurrence within the digestive tract is the gastric antrum associated with H. pylori infection. Our patient is added the rare extragastric cases where the association with H. pylori is inconsistent. We have found a frequent appearance of lower digestive and urological neoplasms in relation to these cases, justified by the expression of circulating cytokines in

Aggressive fibromatosis in the urological system. Report of two adult patients and review of the literature.

Aggressive fibromatoses (AF) are locally aggressive neoplasms that do not metastasize but are frequently associated with one or more recurrences and subsequent associated morbidity. AF in the urological system is quite rare and has mainly been described in single case reports or as isolated cases in a large series of extra-abdominal desmoid tumors. We report 2 cases of AF in the bladder and scrotum, and provide a review of similar published cases.

Initial Evaluation of Uroplakins UPIIIa and UPII in Selected Benign Urological Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Uroplakins (UPs) are glycoproteins that play a specific role in the structure and function of the urothelium. Disorders which affect the normal expression of UPs are associated with the pathogenesis of infections and neoplasms of the urinary tract, primary vesicoureteral reflux, hydronephrosis and renal dysfunction. The appearance of uroplakins in the urine and/or plasma may be of potential importance in the detection of urinary tract dysfunction. The aim of the present study was to investigate uroplakin IIIa (UPIIIa) and uroplakin II (UPII) expression in patients with selected uro

Urothelial neoplasms of the urinary bladder occurring in young adult and pediatric patients: a comprehensive review of literature with implications for patient management.

Bladder urothelial carcinoma is typically a disease of older individuals and rarely occurs below the age of 40 years. There is debate and uncertainty in the literature regarding the clinicopathologic characteristics of bladder urothelial neoplasms in younger patients compared with older patients, although no consistent age criteria have been used to define "younger" age group categories. Use of the World Health Organization 2004/International Society of Urological Pathology 1998 grading nomenclature and recent molecular studies highlight certain unique features of bladder urothelial neoplasms

[Independent multiple primary tumors and second primary neoplasms. Relationship between smoking].

Multiple primary tumors and second primary neoplasms have been increasing in incidence in recent decades and are reviewed in this paper. The reasons attributed to this significant increase are fundamentalment the best diagnosis of multiple concurrent cases and increased overall survival of patients diagnosed with cancer, allowing surface new primary tumors in other organs during or after standard monitoring. At the same time are invoked as possible causes of the widespread use of radio and chemotherapy for the first tumor. The genitourinary system is frequently involved in cases of multiple ne

Potential of hyperbaric oxygen in urological diseases.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a promising medical technology that delivers oxygen to targeted tissues at high pressure to increase the amount of dissolved oxygen in the blood. Over the past three decades, hyperbaric oxygen has been used in a variety of conditions, including radiation-induced tissue injuries, non-healing states with ischemia and malignant neoplasms. In the field of urology, hyperbaric oxygen has also been applied to some pathological conditions (e.g. radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis, Fournier gangrene, interstitial cystitis, male infertility, acute kidney injury and urolog

A Rare Neoplasm: Primary Adrenal Leiomyosarcoma.

Adrenal incidentalomas are common neoplasms and while they are often benign, they have the potential to be malignant. The American Urological Association guidelines state that adrenal incidentalomas should be surgically resected if they are large, metabolically active, or display malignant characteristics. Other groups have suggested that growth kinetics be factored in as well. We present a case of an adult woman with adrenal incidentaloma which was subsequently discovered to be a primary adrenal leiomyosarcoma, a rare subtype of soft tissue tumors.

Distal phalangeal necrosis in the extremities as a paraneoplastic syndrome in prostate cancer: an extremely rare case.

Paraneoplastic syndromes (PNSs) are rare disorders which are triggered by an altered immune system response to a neoplasm. Although prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common urological malignancy associated with PNSs, literature is lacking in defining the cases representing different PNSs in PCa. Herein, we present a 50-year-old man with fulminant distal phalangeal necrosis in the lower extremities after a diagnosis of PCa. Additionally, we review the literature in light of this case.

Predictive Factors for Major Complications and Urological Cancer Diagnosis in Older Adults (≥80 Years) Admitted to the Emergency Department for Hematuria.

Background: Gross Hematuria is a relevant cause of admission to the emergency department in the general population and particularly in older adults (≥80 years). This specific urological symptom is often underestimated and usually associated with benign conditions such as urinary infections or poor hydration. Nevertheless, hematuria could lead to severe acute complications or be the first symptom of urological cancers. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 1169 patients aged ≥80 years consecutively admitted to the emergency department for hematuria. The primary endpoint of the

[Challenges for Urologists in the Care of Patients with Lynch Syndrome: Example of A Patient with Muir-Torre Syndrome, A Subtype of Lynch Syndrome].

The Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is a subtype of the Lynch syndrome (hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer). In addition to tumours typically related to LS, MTS is associated with tumours of the sebaceous gland or keratoacanthoma. MTS is mostly characterised by a mutation of MSH2. In contrast to LS-associated tumours carrying a mutation of MLH1, MSH6 or PMS2, the frequency of urological neoplasms seems to be higher in Lynch syndrome patients with MSH2 mutation. Urological implications for the care of patients with LS or MTS include the early diagnosis of a possible hereditary background in pa

International Society of Urological Pathology Consensus on Cancer Precursor Lesions: Working Group 3 Preneoplastic and Precursor Lesions of the Kidney.

Compared with cancers of other organs, precursor lesions of renal cell neoplasms are rarely discussed. However, there are specific scenarios where cysts or microscopic solid lesions are thought to precede tumor formation. In 2024, the International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) held a consensus meeting on precursor lesions of urologic neoplasms in Florence, Italy. This report details the findings of Working Group 3-Precursor Lesions of the Kidney. Papillary adenoma is likely the best-established precursor lesion in the kidney, thought to be an incipient form of papillary renal cell ca

Clinical and Novel Biomarkers in Penile Carcinoma: A Prospective Review.

Penile carcinoma is a rare urological neoplasia in men compared to other more common tumors, such as prostate, kidney, or bladder tumors. However, this neoplasm continues to affect a large number of patients worldwide, with developing countries presenting the highest incidence and mortality rates. Important risk factors such as the human papilloma virus, a factor affecting a large number of patients, have been described; however, few studies have evaluated screening programs in populations at risk for this disease, which severely affects the quality of life of older men. The management of thes

Human papillomaviruses in urological malignancies: a critical assessment.

OBJECTIVES: Infection with human papillomaviruses (HPVs) is intimately associated with anogenital tract malignancies including cervical and vulvar cancer, a subset of oropharyngeal cancers and certain types of skin cancer. A number of urological tumors have likewise been suggested to be associated with high-risk HPV infection; however, many studies are hampered by a limited number of detection methods. The goal of this review article is to define a set of key criteria when implicating a virus in a human cancer and to apply these criteria to HPV infection in urological cancers. MATERIALS AND M

Fat transformation of the tissue of the single left kidney 10 years after treatment of renal cell carcinoma of both kidneys.

Renal cell carcinoma morbidity grows in most of countries. All over the world 200,000 new cases are diagnosed every year, and approximately 102,000 patients die of this disease, with an incidence of nearly nine cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year. That's why, renal cell carcinoma is a challenging field in the current oncology research. Among urologic tumors, renal cell carcinoma ranks third in terms of incidence after prostate carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. Renal cell carcinoma accounts for approximately 3% of adult malignancies and 90-95% of neoplasms arising fro
