LAPAROSCOPIC-ASSISTED INSERTION OF A VENTRICULOPERITONEAL SHUNT IN A RESCUED ASIATIC BLACK BEAR (URSUS THIBETANUS) IN LAOS.

A 3-yr-old Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus), weighing 68 kg, underwent a laparoscopic-assisted placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt for hydrocephalus in the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Rescued as a young cub with a notably domed head, the bear's condition had deteriorated with age, but euthanasia was not a viable option because of cultural issues. Surgery was attempted as a palliative measure. The bear had ventrally orientated crossed eyes (abducens nerve palsy and dorsal midbrain syndrome), papilledema, severe rhinorrhea, depressed mentation, lethargy, a very poor appetite, an

A new genotype of Cryptosporidium from giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in China.

Fifty-seven fecal samples were collected from giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) in Sichuan and examined for Cryptosporidium oocysts by Sheather's sugar flotation technique. An 18-year-old male giant panda was Cryptosporidium positive, with oocysts of an average size of 4.60×3.99 μm (n=50). The isolate was genetically analyzed using the partial 18S rRNA, 70 kDa heat shock protein (HSP70), Cryptosporidium oocyst wall protein (COWP) and actin genes. Multi-locus genetic characterization indicated that the present isolat

Giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) spermatozoon decondensation in vitro is not compromised by cryopreservation.

Natural breeding of giant pandas in captivity is compromised, making artificial insemination and spermatozoa cryopreservation essential for genetic management. This study examined the influence of freeze-thawing on traditional parameters such as motility and spermatozoon functionality, specifically decondensation in vitro. Giant panda spermatozoa were assessed before and after rapid cryopreservation (4 degrees C to -130 degrees C over 2 min) in liquid nitrogen vapour. Spermatozoa pre-incubated in medium for 6 h were co-incubated with cat zonae (2 zonae microL(-1)) for 30 min to effect capacita

High Prevalence and Intensity of Trichinella Infection in Yukon American Black (Ursus americanus) and Grizzly (Ursus arctos) Bears.

Trichinella spp. nematodes are commonly found in bear species (Ursidae) and can pose severe health risks to humans when infective first-stage larvae are ingested in meat. Samples of tongue or masseter muscle from 22 male and 11 female American black bears (Ursus americanus; mean age 6.5 yr, range 1-16 yr) and 22 male, eight female, and one unknown sex grizzly bears (Ursus arctos; mean age 8.8 yr, range 2-28 yr), from Yukon, Canada, were tested to determine prevalence and intensity of Trichinella spp. infection. For black bears, prevalence was 20% and mean intensity was 401 larvae per gram of t

Application of close-kin mark-recapture to an American black bear population using harvest samples.

Close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR) offers a promising alternative to traditional mark-recapture methods for estimating wildlife population parameters. CKMR estimates demographic parameters by identifying genetic relationships between individuals, effectively "recapturing" parental genotypes through their offspring's genetic profiles. One key advantage of CKMR over traditional methods is the ability to estimate abundance without recapture, facilitating the use of lethally collected biological samples. Here, we present an application of CKMR to a terrestrial species using samples collected from har

Compound food failure on a deteriorated mast system drives Japan's bear conflict crisis.

Climate change is recognized as a key amplifier of human-wildlife conflict, yet the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Japan's 2025 bear crisis, which produced 232 casualties, has been widely attributed to rapid population growth, but demographic processes are far too gradual to explain the surge. Using an 18-year dataset across five Tohoku prefectures, we find that it reflects bears responding to a rhythm breakdown of the forest's food supply. Conflict rises sharply once mast production falls below a threshold. Around 2006, the mast system passed a break point, after which lean y

PERIOPERATIVE ANALGESIC MANAGEMENT IN ASIATIC BLACK BEARS (URSUS THIBETANUS) UNDERGOING OPEN CHOLECYSTECTOMY.

Eight adult Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) rescued from bile farms in Vietnam were diagnosed with chronic cholecystitis that required surgical intervention. In addition, these bears exhibited various comorbidities, including cardiovascular changes, chronic kidney disease, degenerative joint disease, obesity, and sarcopenia. The bears were anesthetized for an open midline cholecystectomy using a combination of 3 mg/kg tiletamine/zolazepam, 0.035 mg/kg medetomidine, and 0.05 mg/kg butorphanol administered IM via blowpipe. Anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in 100% oxygen. Butorpha

Behavior of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) cubs post-den emergence at the Detroit Zoo.

In the wild, female polar bears (Ursus maritimus) with cubs may spend extended periods of time within the den following initial emergence. As a result, studying behavioral development of cubs at the denning site has been difficult and unreliable. Although care staff at zoological institutions have easier access to animals, every effort is made to minimize intrusions to maternal groups, which presents research limitations. Detroit Zoological Society staff used audio-equipped cameras installed in behind-the-scenes spaces to conduct approximately 9 weeks of monitoring on two female polar bear cub

Fate and preservation of the late pleistocene cave bears from Niedźwiedzia Cave in Poland, through taphonomy, pathology, and geochemistry.

This comprehensive study examines fossil remains from Niedźwiedzia Cave in the Eastern Sudetes, offering detailed insights into the palaeobiology and adversities encountered by the Pleistocene cave bear Ursus spelaeus ingressus. Emphasising habitual cave use for hibernation and a primarily herbivorous diet, the findings attribute mortality to resource scarcity during hibernation and habitat fragmentation amid climate shifts. Taphonomic analysis indicates that the cave was extensively used by successive generations of bears, virtually unexposed to the impact of predators. The study also reveals

Early evidence for bear exploitation during MIS 9 from the site of Schöningen 12 (Germany).

A cutmarked bear metatarsal and phalanx from the German open-air sites of Schöningen 12 II-1 and 12 B, respectively, correlated with the interglacial optimum of MIS 9 (ca. 320 ka), provide early evidence for the exploitation of bear skins. Archaeological sites with evidence of bear exploitation from the Lower Paleolithic are rare, with only Boxgrove (United Kingdom) and Bilzingsleben (Germany) yielding cutmarked bear bones indicating skinning. We interpret these finds as evidence for bear hunting and primary access since bear skins are best extracted shortly after the animal's death. The very

Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in a Case of Metastatic Thyroid Carcinoma in a Brown Bear (Ursus arctos).

A 20-year-old male brown bear (Ursus arctos) with a 20 × 25 cm necrotic mass adjacent to the trachea was diagnosed as having an anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. Metastases were observed in the lungs and one adrenal gland and, histologically, these had anaplastic and follicular carcinoma patterns, respectively. E-cadherin labelling was observed in the adrenal mass only, while N-cadherin immunolabelling was detected in the thyroid gland and lung masses. Thyroid-specific markers (thyroid transcription factor-1, thyroglobulin) were expressed in the adrenal gland metastasis. This case illustrates an e

AORTIC ANEURYSM, DISSECTION, AND RUPTURE IN SIX BILE-FARMED BEARS.

Across China and Southeast Asia, over 17,000 bears are currently farmed for bile, predominantly for traditional Chinese medicines. Bears on farms in China are cage confined and undergo repeated daily bile extraction facilitated by surgically implanted catheters or gallbladder fistulas. Numerous health problems have been reported in bile-farmed bears including peritonitis, abdominal hernias, and extraction site abscessation. Between 2009 and 2014, five Asiatic black bears ( Ursus thibetanus) and one Asiatic black/Eurasian brown bear ( Ursus arctos arctos) hybrid, rescued from the bear bile indu

MEDULLOBLASTOMA IN A GRIZZLY BEAR (URSUS ARCTOS HORRIBLIS).

A 3-yr-old female spayed grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) was evaluated for seizure activity along with lethargy, inappetence, dull mentation, and aggressive behavior. Magnetic resonance (MR) examination of the brain revealed a contrast-enhanced right cerebellar mass with multifocal smaller nodules located in the left cerebellum, thalamus, hippocampus, and cerebrum with resultant obstructive hydrocephalus. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed mild mononuclear pleocytosis, with differentials including inflammatory versus neoplastic processes. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid were also submi

Hypospadias in a polar bear (Ursus maritimus).

Corrective surgery on a 1.5-yr-old male polar bear (Ursus maritimus) with hypospadias included amputation of the vestigial penis, bilateral orchiectomy with scrotal ablation, and distal perineal urethrostomy. Hypospadias in other species is a congenital deformity that may be caused by extra- and intrauterine factors resulting in a disruption of the testosterone balance during urethral development, but the causative mechanism in this bear is unknown. The urethrostomy site was functional without complications 8 mo after surgery.

Geographical distribution of Demodex ursi in black bears from Florida.

From May 1990 to February 1996, 55 black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) (38 males, 17 females) from 21 counties in Florida (USA), were examined for Demodex ursi (Acari: Demodecidae). The sample included cubs < 1-yr-old (n = 12), juveniles (1 to < 3 yr, n = 20), and adults (3 to 12 yr, n = 23). Demodex ursi was collected from four bears by deep scrapings of 15 sites on the head and forelimb of each bear. All four bears with demodicosis had crusty, scaly skin lesions, and moderate alopecia. No D. ursi were seen in any of the 750 scrapings from the other 51 bears, nor did any of those bears
