Cypholophus macrocephalus sap is used to treat bacterially infected cutaneous leg ulcers in Papua New Guinea. High resolution LC-MS analysis of the sap revealed it to be rich in sulphated flavonoids. We assessed the effects of the sap on the differentiation and pro-inflammatory anti-microbial responses of M1 macrophages using IL-6 and TNF-α ELISAs and found significant increases in M1 macrophage IL-6 expression with concentrations as low as 243 ng/ml sap. Neutrophil IL-6 and TNF-α expression was also significantly increased but to a lesser degree. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) 1, 2, 8 and 9

Urtica simensis is a native nutraceutical herb in Ethiopia, but its safety of repeated oral intake has not been reported yet. This study aimed to evaluate acute and subacute toxicity of ethanol leaf extract of U. simensis in rats. The median lethal dose (LD₅。) was determined using OECD guideline 425. Sixty rats (30 males and 30 females) were assigned to six groups per OECD guideline 407. Groups I-III received 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg of U. simensis ethanol leaf extract daily for 4 weeks, while Group IV received distilled water. The satellite 1000 mg/kg and satellite control groups were monitore

AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to identify wild plants collected for medical purposes by the local people of Sivrice County, located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey, and to establish the uses and local names of these plants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Field study was carried out over a period of approximately two years (2005-2006). During this period, 146 vascular plant specimens were collected. In addition, the relative importance value of the species was determined and informant consensus factor (FIC) was calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study.
RESULTS: A total

UNLABELLED: Recently, there has been an increase in the number of patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and the number of publications devoted to this problem is increasing. The main etiological factors of AR are pollen of trees, meadow and weeds, as well as mold spores, household allergens and epidermis of animals. Epidemiological studies have found that the prevalence and structure of AR are influenced by regional characteristics, such as the climatic and geographical and social characteristics of the region, and successively therapeutic and preventive algorithms in AR are also different.

BACKGROUND: Urtica dioica (Urticaceae) has outstanding medicinal and pharmacological properties. This investigation was aimed to assess the chemical composition, the total polyphenol and flavonoid content, antioxidant, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects of Urtica dioica essential oil (UDEO).
METHODS: GC/MS analysis was performed to assess the chemical composition, standard antioxidative test, the DPPH assay, the reducing power assay, as well as the anti-proliferative capacities of UDEO against HeLa cell lines using the MTT test. In addition, the anti-inflammatory activities of

The hepatoprotective activities and the mechanisms of actions of Musanga cecropioides stem bark aqueous extract (MCW) were investigated on acute hepatocellular injuries induced by intraperitoneal (IP) carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) (20% CCl(4)/olive oil, 1.5 mL/kg) and 800 mg/kg/IP of acetaminophen (APAP) in normal saline, in male Wistar rats. Among the Yorubas (South-West Nigeria), cold decoction of MCW is used as a natural antidote for oral gastric poisonings, infective hepatitis and other liver diseases. Its hepatoprotective activities were monitored by assaying for the serum aminotransferas

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Urtica dentata Hand (UDH), the root of Laportea bulbifera (Sieb. et. Zucc.) Wedd, has been traditionally used in traditional Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory and immuno-regulatory agent for rheumatoid arthritis and some other autoimmune diseases treatment. And the coumarins are the major components of UDH.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the effect of total coumarins (TC) isolated from UDH on the development of autoimmune diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight-week-old non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice were randomly divided into four groups: control group

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Urtica fissa E. Pritz. are important herbs and have been traditionally used as ethnic medicine to treat rheumatism, inflammation, diabetes, and benign prostatic hyperplasia by the Han, Uighur, and other minorities in China, and also as an aphrodisiac in Uighur medicine.
AIMS OF THE STUDY: To determine the effect and potential mechanism of 3, 4-divanillyltetrahydrofuran (DVTF), one of the main active components isolated from U. fissa on hypogonadism in diabetic mice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The active compound DVTF was extracted and separated from the roots of U

BACKGROUND: The pollen of Parietaria spp., a weed of the Urticaceae family, is a major cause of respiratory allergy in the Mediterranean area, where the most common species are Parietaria judaica and Parietaria officinalis. In this study, we evaluated the specific serum IgE-binding profiles to individual P. judaica pollen recombinant major allergen, and Phleum pratense cytoskeletal profilin and a 2-EF-hand calcium-binding allergen homologous to cross-reactive Parietaria pollen allergens, in patients allergic to pollen with positive skin test towards Parietaria spp. extract.
METHODS: The prese
